    AbstractThe Final-Phase Weyburn geochemical research program includes explicitly integrated yet conceptually distinct monitoring, modeling, and experimental components. The principal objectives are to monitor CO2-induced compositional evolution within the reservoir through time-lapse sampling and chemical analysis of produced fluids; to document the absence (or presence) of injected CO2 within reservoir overburden through analogous monitoring of shallow groundwater and soil gas; to predict intra-reservoir CO2 migration paths, dynamic CO2 mass partitioning among distinct trapping mechanisms, and reservoir/seal permeability evolution through reactive transport modeling; to assess the impact of CO2-brine-rock reactions on fracture flow and isolation performance through experimental studies that directly support the monitoring and modeling work; and to exploit a novel stochastic inversion technique that enables explicit integration of these diverse monitoring data and forward models to improve reservoir characterization and long-term forecasts of isolation performance

    Diamagnetism Of Graphite

    A calculation of the diamagnetism of graphite including the effects of trigonal warping of the Fermi surfaces has been performed using Fukuyama's formulation of the diamagnetism of Bloch electrons. Inclusion of the trigonal warping increases the diamagnetism by about 13% at low temperatures and reduces it by about 1% at high temperatures. A paramagnetic constant is used to represent all effects not associated with the free carriers. The experimental diamagnetism can be fitted quite well using values of the energy band parameters which give agreement with the de Haas-van Alphen effect, optical absorption, and magnetoreflection experiments. © 1974 The American Physical Society.962467247

    The influence of chop location on pork loin quality

    Pork longissimus muscle quality characteristics were evaluated on 109 center cut boneless loins. After 21 d aging, loins were cut into 1-inch chops and allowed to bloom for 30 minutes before visual measurements (color, marbling and firmness) and instrumental color were recorded for each chop. Overall, visual color was the lightest on the anterior and posterior ends and was the darkest from approximately 50% to 80% of the length of the loin. Marbling was the highest at the posterior end, lowest in mid-loin, then higher toward the anterior end. Loins were the softest at the anterior end and became firmer toward the posterior end. From the anterior to approximately 40- 50% of the loin length, chops became darker (lower L*), redder (higher a*), and less yellow (lower b*). Near the center of the loin, color was constant, but became lighter (higher L*) and more yellow (higher b*) at the posterior end. Chops located at 25% (anterior), 50% (middle) and 75% (posterior) of the length of each loin were collected and further analyzed. Section chops within loins had similar pH values. The chop from the anterior section contained the highest percentage of crude fat, followed by the posterior section chop, and the middle section chop contained the lowest percentage. The middle section chop contained the highest percentage of moisture. The posterior section chop had more moisture display loss than the anterior and middle section chops. The anterior section chop had more cooking loss than the posterior section chop. Chops became progressively less tender the more posterior the section location

    Fast algorithms for min independent dominating set

    We first devise a branching algorithm that computes a minimum independent dominating set on any graph with running time O*(2^0.424n) and polynomial space. This improves the O*(2^0.441n) result by (S. Gaspers and M. Liedloff, A branch-and-reduce algorithm for finding a minimum independent dominating set in graphs, Proc. WG'06). We then show that, for every r>3, it is possible to compute an r-((r-1)/r)log_2(r)-approximate solution for min independent dominating set within time O*(2^(nlog_2(r)/r))

    Correlation structure in nondipole photoionization

    The nondipole parameters that characterize the angular disribution of the photoelectrons from the 3d subshell of Cs are found to be altered qualitatively by the inclusion of correlation in the form of interchannel coupling between the 3d3/23d_{3/2} and 3d5/23d_{5/2} photoionization channels. A prominent characteristic maximum is predicted only in the parameters for 3d5/23d_{5/2} photoionization, while the effect for 3d3/23d_{3/2} is rather weak. The results are obtained within the framework of the Generalized Random Phase Approximation with Exchange (GRPAE), which in addition to the RPAE effects takes into account the rearrangement of all atomic electrons due to the creation of a 3d vacancy

    Changes in epidemiological patterns of sea lice infestation on farmed Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., in Scotland between 1996 and 2006

    Analyses of a unique database containing sea lice records over an 11 year period provide evidence of changing infestation patterns in Scotland. The data, collected from more than 50 commercial Atlantic salmon farms, indicate that both species of sea lice commonly found in Scotland, Lepeophtheirus salmonis and Caligus elongatus, have declined on farms over the past decade. Reductions for both species have been particularly marked since 2001 when more effective veterinary medicines became available. Treatment data were also available in the database and these show a growing trend towards the use of the in feed medication emamectin benzoate (Slice), particularly in the first year of the salmon production cycle. However, this trend to wards single product use has not been sustained in 2006, the latest year for which data are available. There is some evidence of region to region variation within Scotland with the Western Isles experiencing higher levels of infestation. However, compared to the levels observed between 1996 and 2000, all regions have benefited from reduced lice infestation, with the overall pattern showing a particular reduction in the second and third quarters of the second year of production

    An In Vitro Study of the Role of Implant Positioning on Ulnohumeral Articular Contact in Distal Humeral Hemiarthroplasty

    © 2017 American Society for Surgery of the Hand Purpose To investigate the effect of implant positioning on ulnohumeral contact using patient-specific distal humeral (DH) implants. Methods Seven reverse-engineered DH implants were manufactured based on computed tomography scans of their osseous geometry. Native ulnae were paired with corresponding native humeri and custom DH implants in a loading apparatus. The ulna was set at 90° of flexion and the humeral component (either native bone or reverse-engineered implant) was positioned from 5° varus to 5° valgus in 2.5° increments under a 100-N compressive load. Contact with the ulna was measured with both the native distal humerus and the reverse-engineered DH implant at all varus-valgus (VV) angles, using a joint casting method. Contact patches were digitized and analyzed in 4 ulnar quadrants. Output variables were contact area and contact pattern. Results Mean contact area of the native articulation was significantly greater than with the distal humeral hemiarthroplasty (DHH) implants across all VV positions. Within the native condition, contact area did not significantly change owing to VV angulation. Within the DHH condition, contact area also did not significantly change owing to VV angulation. Conversely, in the DHH condition, contact pattern did significantly change. Medial ulnar contact pattern was significantly affected by VV angulation. Lateral ulnar contact was variably affected, but generally decreased as well. Conclusions Ulnar contact patterns were changed as a result of VV implant positioning using reverse-engineered DH implants, most notably on the medial aspect of the joint. Implant positioning plays a crucial role in producing contact patterns more like those observed in the native joint. Clinical relevance Recent clinical evidence reports nonsymmetrical ulnar wear after DHH. This work suggests that implant positioning is likely a contributing factor and that more exact implant positioning may lead to better clinical outcomes
