Flexible matrix composite laminated disk/ring flywheel
An energy storage flywheel consisting of a quasi-isotropic composite disk overwrapped by a circumferentially wound ring made of carbon fiber and a elastometric matrix is proposed. Through analysis it was demonstrated that with an elastomeric matrix to relieve the radial stresses, a laminated disk/ring flywheel can be designed to store a least 80.3 Wh/kg or about 68% more than previous disk/ring designs. at the same time the simple construction is preserved
A transport coefficient: the electrical conductivity
I describe the lattice determination of the electrical conductivity of the
quark gluon plasma. Since this is the first extraction of a transport
coefficient with a degree of control over errors, I next use this to make
estimates of other transport related quantities using simple kinetic theory
formulae. The resulting estimates are applied to fluctuations, ultra-soft
photon spectra and the viscosity. Dimming of ultra-soft photons is exponential
in the mean free path, and hence is a very sensitive probe of transport.Comment: Talk given in ICPAQGP 2005, SINP, Kolkat
Ignorance is Almost Bliss: Near-Optimal Stochastic Matching With Few Queries
The stochastic matching problem deals with finding a maximum matching in a
graph whose edges are unknown but can be accessed via queries. This is a
special case of stochastic -set packing, where the problem is to find a
maximum packing of sets, each of which exists with some probability. In this
paper, we provide edge and set query algorithms for these two problems,
respectively, that provably achieve some fraction of the omniscient optimal
solution.
Our main theoretical result for the stochastic matching (i.e., -set
packing) problem is the design of an \emph{adaptive} algorithm that queries
only a constant number of edges per vertex and achieves a
fraction of the omniscient optimal solution, for an arbitrarily small
. Moreover, this adaptive algorithm performs the queries in only a
constant number of rounds. We complement this result with a \emph{non-adaptive}
(i.e., one round of queries) algorithm that achieves a
fraction of the omniscient optimum. We also extend both our results to
stochastic -set packing by designing an adaptive algorithm that achieves a
fraction of the omniscient optimal solution, again
with only queries per element. This guarantee is close to the best known
polynomial-time approximation ratio of for the
\emph{deterministic} -set packing problem [Furer and Yu, 2013]
We empirically explore the application of (adaptations of) these algorithms
to the kidney exchange problem, where patients with end-stage renal failure
swap willing but incompatible donors. We show on both generated data and on
real data from the first 169 match runs of the UNOS nationwide kidney exchange
that even a very small number of non-adaptive edge queries per vertex results
in large gains in expected successful matches
Institutions for Climate Adaptation: An Inventory of Institutions in the Netherlands that are Relevant for Climate Change
One of the goals of project IC12, a research project of the Climate changes Spatial Planning programme, is to assess if the formal institutions operating in the Netherlands are improving or hampering adaptive capacity. In order to answer the research question, the most important documents referring to those institutions need to be evaluated. This document presents an initial inventory of these adaptation institutions â i.e. policy plans, laws and directives, reports and other documents that seemed relevant to the question at hand
Fe and N self-diffusion in non-magnetic Fe:N
Fe and N self-diffusion in non-magnetic FeN has been studied using neutron
reflectivity. The isotope labelled multilayers, FeN/57Fe:N and Fe:N/Fe:15N were
prepared using magnetron sputtering. It was remarkable to observe that N
diffusion was slower compared to Fe while the atomic size of Fe is larger
compared to N. An attempt has been made to understand the diffusion of Fe and N
in non-magnetic Fe:N
Development of procedures for calculating stiffness and damping properties of elastomers in engineering applications. Part 2: Elastomer characteristics at constant temperature
Dynamic properties of a commerical polybutadiene compound were determined at a constant temperature of 32 C by a forced-vibration resonant mass type of apparatus. The constant thermal state of the elastomer was ensured by keeping the ambient temperature constant and by limiting the power dissipation in the specimen. Experiments were performed with both compression and shear specimens at several preloads (nominal strain varying from 0 to 5 percent), and the results are reported in terms of a complex stiffness as a function of frequency. Very weak frequency dependence is observed and a simple power law type of correlation is shown to represent the data well. Variations in the complex stiffness as a function of preload are also found to be small for both compression and shear specimens
On the sign of kurtosis near the QCD critical point
We point out that the quartic cumulant (and kurtosis) of the order parameter
fluctuations is universally negative when the critical point is approached on
the crossover side of the phase separation line. As a consequence, the kurtosis
of a fluctuating observable, such as, e.g., proton multiplicity, may become
smaller than the value given by independent Poisson statistics. We discuss
implications for the Beam Energy Scan program at RHIC.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Detecting cold gas at intermediate redshifts: GMRT survey using Mg II systems
Intervening HI 21-cm absorption systems at z > 1.0 are very rare and only 4
confirmed detections have been reported in the literature. Despite their
scarcity, they provide interesting and unique insights into the physical
conditions in the interstellar medium of high-z galaxies. Moreover, they can
provide independent constraints on the variation of fundamental constants. We
report 3 new detections based on our ongoing Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope
(GMRT) survey for 21-cm absorbers at 1.10< z_abs< 1.45 from candidate damped
Lyman_alpha systems. The 21-cm lines are narrow for the z_abs = 1.3710 system
towards SDSS J0108-0037 and z_abs = 1.1726 system toward SDSS J2358-1020. Based
on line full-width at half maximum, the kinetic temperatures are <= 5200 K and
<=800 K, respectively. The 21-cm absorption profile of the third system, z_abs
=1.1908 system towards SDSS J0804+3012, is shallow, broad and complex,
extending up to 100 km/s. The centroids of the 21-cm lines are found to be
shifted with respect to the corresponding centroids of the metal lines derived
from SDSS spectra. This may mean that the 21-cm absorption is not associated
