Rapidity Gaps Between Jets
An excess of events with a rapidity gap between jets, over what would be
expected from non-diffractive processes, has been observed at HERA. A process
based on a perturbative QCD calculation of colour singlet exchange has been
added to HERWIG. With this addition, HERWIG is able to describe the number of
events with a gap between jets over the number without a gap. This gap fraction
is predicted to rise at large rapidity intervals between jets which would only
be visible if the detector coverage were increased.Comment: 5 pages including 3 figures. To appear in the conference proceedings

Inducing metamorphosis in the irukandji jellyfish Carukia barnesi
Here we utilize chemical ecology as a tool to manipulate the biological system of a small, but highly venomous to humans, cubozoan jellyfish, Carukia barnesi. We trialled a range of chemical reagents including indole compounds, 9-cis-retinoic acid and lugols solution to induce metamorphosis between the polyp and medusa life stages. An optimum method was determined resulting in a 90% metamorphosis rate to healthy medusa by exposing the polyps to 1 μM of 5-methoxy-2-methylindole for 24 h. Of note is that chemical exposure time significantly impacts health and metamorphosis rates in this species. We also present a theoretical mechanism for the chemical/biological interactions occurring during metamorphosis. This is a significant methodological advancement which now enables rearing of this animal en mass in aquaria—a world first for this species—which will subsequently supply and facilitate venom research into this understudied jellyfish
Anticipatory prescribing for end of life care in the community: a survey of community nurses in England
Anticipatory prescribing is increasingly common in the UK, yet little is known about nurses’ roles in the process. As part of a wider study to explore this, a postal survey of 575 community/district, nursing home and palliative care nurses was undertaken in two regions. Nurses report anticipatory prescriptions to be very common, and once in place they are normally used. Findings show that nurses report taking prominent roles throughout the anticipatory prescribing process and principal responsibility for administering and monitoring the medications. Many respondents recount good working relationships with GPs. However, some nurses report being challenged by: GPs who are reluctant to prescribe the medications, incorrectly written prescriptions, and difficulties in gaining access to the necessary medications. Qualitative comments indicated that being a nurse prescriber could enhance confidence to use anticipatory prescriptions. Importantly, nurses responding to the survey perceived that anticipatory prescriptions facilitated provision of good end of life care
Ultraluminous Star-forming Galaxies and Extremely Luminous Warm Molecular Hydrogen Emission at z = 2.16 in the PKS 1138–26 Radio Galaxy Protocluster
A deep Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph map of the PKS 1138–26 galaxy protocluster reveals ultraluminous polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission from obscured star formation in three protocluster galaxies, including Hα-emitter (HAE) 229, HAE 131, and the central Spiderweb Galaxy. Star formation rates of ~500-1100 M_☉ yr^(–1) are estimated from the 7.7 μm PAH feature. At such prodigious formation rates, the galaxy stellar masses will double in 0.6-1.1 Gyr. We are viewing the peak epoch of star formation for these protocluster galaxies. However, it appears that extinction of Hα is much greater (up to a factor of 40) in the two ULIRG HAEs compared to the Spiderweb. This may be attributed to different spatial distributions of star formation-nuclear star formation in the HAEs versus extended star formation in accreting satellite galaxies in the Spiderweb. We find extremely luminous mid-IR rotational line emission from warm molecular hydrogen in the Spiderweb Galaxy, with L(H_2 0-0 S(3)) = 1.4 × 10^(44) erg s^(–1) (3.7 × 10^(10) L_☉), ~20 times more luminous than any previously known H2 emission galaxy (MOHEG). Depending on the temperature, this corresponds to a very large mass of >9 × 10^(6)-2 × 10^9 M_☉ of T > 300 K molecular gas, which may be heated by the PKS 1138–26 radio jet, acting to quench nuclear star formation. There is >8 times more warm H_2 at these temperatures in the Spiderweb than what has been seen in low-redshift (z < 0.2) radio galaxies, indicating that the Spiderweb may have a larger reservoir of molecular gas than more evolved radio galaxies. This is the highest redshift galaxy yet in which warm molecular hydrogen has been directly detected
The Claims Culture: A Taxonomy of Industry Attitudes
This paper presents an analysis of a familiar aspect of construction industry culture that we have dubbed 'the claims culture'. This is a culture of contract administration that lays a strong emphasis on the planning and management of claims. The principal elements of the analysis are two sets of distinctions. The first comprises economic and occupational orders, referring to two kinds of control that are exercised over the construction process; predicated respectively on economic ownership and occupational competence. The second refers to contrasting attitudes towards relationships and problem solving within these orders: respectively 'distributive' and 'integrative'. The concepts of economic and occupational order entail further sub-categories. The various attitudes associated with these categories and sub-categories are described. They are assessed as to their consequences for change initiatives in the industry

Large amounts of optically-obscured star formation in the host galaxies of some type-2 quasars
We present Hubble Space Telescope images, and spectral energy distributions
from optical to infrared wavelengths for a sample of six 0.3<z<0.8 type-2
quasars selected in the mid-infrared using data from the Spitzer Space
Telescope. All the host galaxies show some signs of disturbance. Most seem to
possess dusty, star-forming disks. The disk inclination, estimated from the
axial ratio of the hosts, correlates with the depth of the silicate feature in
the mid-infrared spectra, implying that at least some of the reddening towards
the AGN arises in the host galaxy. The star formation rates in these objects,
as inferred from the strengths of the PAH features and far-infrared continuum,
range from 3-90 Msun/yr, but are mostly much larger than those inferred from
the [OII]3727 emission line luminosity, due to obscuration. Taken together with
studies of type-2 quasar hosts from samples selected in the optical and X-ray,
this is consistent with previous suggestions that two types of extinction
processes operate within the type-2 quasar population, namely a component due
to the dusty torus in the immediate environment of the AGN, and a more extended

On the breaking of collinear factorization in QCD
We investigate the breakdown of collinear factorization for non-inclusive
observables in hadron-hadron collisions. For pure QCD processes, factorization
is violated at the three-loop level and it has a structure identical to that
encountered previously in the case of super-leading logarithms. In particular,
it is driven by the non-commutation of Coulomb/Glauber gluon exchanges with
other soft exchanges. Beyond QCD, factorization may be violated at the two-loop
level provided that the hard subprocess contains matrix element contributions
