    A wall interference assessment/correction system

    The Hackett method (a Wall Pressure Signature Method) was selected to be adapted for the 12 ft Wind Tunnel WIAC system. This method uses limited measurements of the static pressure at the wall, in conjunction with the solid wall boundary condition, to determine the strength and distribution of singularities representing the test article. The singularities are used in term for estimating wall interference at the model location. Hackett's method will have to be formulated for application to the unique geometry of the 12 ft tunnel. The WIAC code will be validated by conducting numerically simulated experiments rather than actual wind tunnel experiments. The simulations will be used to generate both free air and confined wind tunnel flow fields for each of the test articles over a range of test configurations. Specifically the pressure signature at the test section wall will be computed for the confined case to provide the simulated 'measured' data. These data will serve as the input for the WIAC method. The performance of the WIAC method then may be evaluated by comparing the corrected parameters with those for the free air simulation

    Modelling aspects of oviduct fluid formation in vitro

    © 2017 Society for Reproduction and Fertility. Oviduct fluid is the microenvironment that supports early reproductive processes including fertilisation, embryo cleavage and genome activation. However, the composition and regulation of this critical environment remain rather poorly defined. This study uses an in vitro preparation of the bovine oviduct epithelium to investigate the formation and composition of in vitro-derived oviduct fluid (ivDOF) within a controlled environment. We confirm the presence of oviduct-specific glycoprotein 1 in ivDOF and show that the amino acid and carbohydrate content resembles that of previously reported in vivo data. In parallel, using a different culture system, a panel of oviduct epithelial solute carrier genes and the corresponding flux of amino acids within ivDOF in response to steroid hormones were investigated. We next incorporated fibroblasts directly beneath the epithelium. This dual culture arrangement represents more faithfully the in vivo environment and impacts on ivDOF composition. Lastly, physiological and pathophysiological endocrine states were modelled and their impact on the in vitro oviduct preparation was evaluated. These experiments help clarify the dynamic function of the oviduct in vitro and suggest a number of future research avenues, such as investigating epithelial-fibroblast interactions, probing the molecular aetiologies of subfertility and optimising embryo culture media

    UHF and VHF radar observations of thunderstorms

    A study of thunderstorms was made in the Summer of 1985 with the 430-MHz and 50-MHz radars at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico. Both radars use the 300-meter dish, which gives a beam width of less than 2 degrees even at these long wavelengths. Though the radars are steerable, only vertical beams were used in this experiment. The height resolution was 300 and 150 meters for the UHF and VHF, respectively. Lightning echoes, as well as returns from precipitation and clear-air turbulence were detected with both wavelengths. Large increases in the returned power were found to be coincident with increasing downward vertical velocities at UHF, whereas at VHF the total power returned was relatively constant during the life of a storm. This was attributed to the fact that the VHF is more sensitive to scattering from the turbulence-induced inhomogeneities in the refractive index and less sensitive to scatter from precipitation particles. On occasion, the shape of the Doppler spectra was observed to change with the occurrence of a lightning discharge in the pulse volume. Though the total power and mean reflectivity weighted Doppler velocity changed little during these events, the power is Doppler frequency bins near that corresponding to the updraft did increase substantially within a fraction of a second after a discharge was detected in the beam.     Evidence for charge orbital and spin stripe order in an overdoped manganite

    We present diffraction data on a single-layered manganite La(0.42)Sr(1.58)MnO4 with hole doping (x>0.5). Overdoped La(0.42)Sr(1.58)MnO4 exhibits a complex ordering of charges, orbitals and spins. Single crystal neutron diffraction experiments reveal three incommensurate and one commensurate order parameters to be tightly coupled. The position and the shape of the distinct superstructure scattering points to a stripe arrangement in which ferromagnetic zigzag chains are disrupted by additional Mn4+ stripes

    Structural and molecular basis of the assembly of the TRPP2/PKD1 complex

    Mutations in PKD1 and TRPP2 account for nearly all cases of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). These 2 proteins form a receptor/ion channel complex on the cell surface. Using a combination of biochemistry, crystallography, and a single-molecule method to determine the subunit composition of proteins in the plasma membrane of live cells, we find that this complex contains 3 TRPP2 and 1 PKD1. A newly identified coiled-coil domain in the C terminus of TRPP2 is critical for the formation of this complex. This coiled-coil domain forms a homotrimer, in both solution and crystal structure, and binds to a single coiled-coil domain in the C terminus of PKD1. Mutations that disrupt the TRPP2 coiled-coil domain trimer abolish the assembly of both the full-length TRPP2 trimer and the TRPP2/PKD1 complex and diminish the surface expression of both proteins. These results have significant implications for the assembly, regulation, and function of the TRPP2/PKD1 complex and the pathogenic mechanism of some ADPKD-producing mutations

    Das vorliegende Diskussionspapier stellt einige Ausführungen der "Klassiker" Marx, Engels und Lenin zum Thema Jugend bzw. Generation zusammen. Die Ausführungen lassen sich im wesentlichen wie folgt zusammenfassen: (1) Das Problem der Generationsfolge (und folglich der Jugend) ist zwar eine allgemeine Bedingung des menschlichen Lebens, d.h. als rein zeitlich-formaler Aspekt uunabhängig von den konkreten gesellschaftlichen Verhältnissen, ihr Wesen und ihre Wirkung hängt jedoch von den konkreten historischen Verhältnissen ab. (2) Der Kapitalismus als eine spezifisch historische Gesellschaftsformation produziert als Folge der ökonomischen und sozialen Antagonismen einen Generationskonflikt, insofern er jüngere gegen ältere Arbeitnehmer ausspielt (Löhne.
