    Precise Characterization and Multiobjective Optimization of Low Noise Amplifiers

    Although practically all function blocks of the satellite navigation receivers are realized using the CMOS digital integrated circuits, it is appropriate to create a separate low noise antenna preamplifier based on a low noise pHEMT. Such an RF front end can be strongly optimized to attain a suitable tradeoff between the noise figure and transducer power gain. Further, as all the four principal navigation systems (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and COMPASS) work in similar frequency bands (roughly from 1.1 to 1.7 GHz), it is reasonable to create the low noise preamplifier for all of them. In the paper, a sophisticated method of the amplifier design is suggested based on multiobjective optimization. A substantial improvement of a standard optimization method is also outlined to satisfy a uniform coverage of Pareto front. Moreover, for enhancing efficiency of many times repeated solutions of large linear systems during the optimization, a new modification of the Markowitz criterion is suggested compatible with fast modes of the LU factorization. Extraordinary attention was also given to the accuracy of modeling. First, an extraction of pHEMT model parameters was performed including its noise part, and several models were compared. The extraction was carried out by an original identification procedure based on a combination of metaheuristic and direct methods. Second, the equations of the passive elements (including transmission lines and T-splitters) were carefully defined using frequency dispersion of their parameters as Q, ESR, etc. Third, an optimal selection of the operating point and essential passive elements was performed using the improved optimization method. Finally, the s-parameters and noise figure of the amplifier were measured, and stability and third-order intermodulation products were also checked

    Permanent denition caries in KwaZulu and Namibia 11-year-olds

    KIMThe permanent dentitions of 11-year-old children in Namibia (n = 295) and KwaZulu (n = 308) living in rural and urban areas were examined using WHO caries diagnostic criteria. In low fluoride areas (less than 0.15 ppmF) significantly more caries was present in rural compared to urban KwaZulu but the prevalences in rural and urban Namibia were similar although significantly higher than in an area with 1.56ppmF in the drinking water. There was significantly more caries in rural Namibia than KwaZulu but the urban prevalences in both regions were similar. It is suggested that the urban findings are useful predictors for the needs of 11-year-old black children but local baseline surveys should be undertaken before considering dental programmes, treatment or preventive, for different rural communities in South Africa

    KIMThe caries prevalence of 1273-, 4- and 5-y-old white children was determined with mirror and probe under natural light at mother and child clinics. The social class of the family, the educational level of the mother and that of the father were determined from a questionnaire filled in by the accompanying adult at the time of examination.     Hamiltonian of a system in quantum field theory can give rise to infinitely many partition functions which correspond to infinitely many inequivalent representations of the canonical commutator or anticommutator rings of field operators. This implies that the system can theoretically exist in infinitely many Gibbs states. The system resides in the Gibbs state which corresponds to its minimal Helmholtz free energy at a given range of the thermodynamic variables. Individual inequivalent representations are associated with different thermodynamic phases of the system. The BCS Hamiltonian of superconductivity is chosen to be an explicit example for the demonstration of the important role of inequivalent representations in practical applications. Its analysis from the inequivalent representations' point of view has led to a recognition of a novel type of the superconducting phase transition.Comment: 25 pages, 6 figure

    Photoluminescence of Bridged Silsesquioxanes Containing Urea or Urethane Groups with Nanostructures Generated by the Competition between the Rates of Self-Assembly of Organic Domains and the Inorganic Polycondensation

    The aim of this study was to investigate the changes produced in the nanostructures and the photoluminescence spectra of bridged silsesquioxanes containing urea or urethane groups, by varying the relative rates between the self-assembly of organic domains and the inorganic polycondensation. Precursors of the bridged silsesquioxanes were 4,4‘-[1,3-phenylenebis(1-methylethylidene)]bis(aniline) and 4,4‘-isopropylidenediphenol, end-capped with 3-isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane. The inorganic polycondensation was produced using either high or low formic acid concentrations, leading to transparent films with different nanostructures as revealed by FTIR, SAXS, and ²⁹Si NMR spectra. For the bridged silsesquioxanes containing urea groups the self-assembly of organic domains was much faster than the inorganic polycondensation for both formic acid concentrations. However, the arrangement was more regular and the short-range order higher when the rate of inorganic polycondensation was lower. The photoluminescence spectra of the most ordered structures revealed the presence of two main processes:  radiative recombinations in inorganic clusters and photoinduced proton-transfer generating NH₂⁺ and N⁻ defects and their subsequent radiative recombination. In the less-ordered urea-bridged silsesquioxanes a third process was present assigned to a photoinduced proton transfer in H-bonds exhibiting a broad range of strengths. For urethane-bridged silsesquioxanes the driving force for the self-assembly of organic bridges was lower than for urea-bridged silsesquioxanes. When the synthesis was performed with a high formic acid concentration, self-assembled structures were not produced. Instead, large inorganic domains composed of small inorganic clusters were generated. Self-assembly of organic domains took place only when employing low polycondensation rates.     HDX and Native Mass Spectrometry Reveals the Different Structural Basis for Interaction of the Staphylococcal Pathogenicity Island Repressor Stl with Dimeric and Trimeric Phage dUTPases

    The dUTPase enzyme family plays an essential role in maintaining the genome integrity and are represented by two distinct classes of proteins; the β-pleated homotrimeric and the all-α homodimeric dUTPases. Representatives of both trimeric and dimeric dUTPases are encoded by Staphylococcus aureus phage genomes and have been shown to interact with the Stl repressor protein of S. aureus pathogenicity island SaPIbov1. In the present work we set out to characterize the interactions between these proteins based on a range of biochemical and biophysical methods and shed light on the binding mechanism of the dimeric φNM1 phage dUTPase and Stl. Using hydrogen deuterium exchange mass spectrometry, we also characterize the protein regions involved in the dUTPase:Stl interactions. Based on these results we provide reasonable explanation for the enzyme inhibitory effect of Stl observed in both types of complexes. Our experiments reveal that Stl employs different peptide segments and stoichiometry for the two different phage dUTPases which allows us to propose a functional plasticity of Stl. The malleable character of Stl serves as a basis for the inhibition of both dimeric and trimeric dUTPases
