    Get PDF
By focusing on Jean Gerson’s use of the vernacular, this article attempts to reassess the importance of Gerson’s view on languages in the context of the history of spirituality in the late Middle Ages, beyond its importance for the history of philosophy, already established by Zénon Kaluza in his important contribution on the 1340 Parisian statute. Understood in a rhetorical and casuistic perspective, the linguistic question is embedded for Gerson in the history of salvation; the aim is to reduce sectarian disputes in the schools and the Church into the linguistic concord of an affective theology rooted in spiritual simplicity. From this viewpoint, the vernacular transpires as a language rather well adapted to the universal quest of mystic contemplation

    Get PDF

Bibliometrics and university libraries: Adding to the professional profile?

    Get PDF
The creation of bibliometric services within university libraries opens up new professional possibilities for libraries, when they are in the midst of rethinking many of their functions. Services to the researcher, such as supporting the management of their curricula vitae through CRIS (current research information system), finding quality measures of journals, or providing advice during the evaluation processes, along with elaborating bibliometric reports in order to support the governance of the University, are postulated as new tasks that can be carried out by the library staff. For these new tasks to be effective, librarians must have some transversal and specific competences. Moreover, they need some of the skills associated with communication competences, because of the importance of communicating properly the work that has been done by the Unit, within the library and for the users and institution

The fortification of Alicante designed by the engineer Ambrosio Borçano

    Get PDF
Since the fortification of Alicante was implemented in 1535, the city had not developed any defensive features which could counteract sea attacks. The extramural growth of the city into the suburb of San Francisco seriously hindered its defence, which was proven with the French bombardment of 1691 after more than 150 years of inactivity. By 1677 Grand Master Borçano Ambrosio drew up a plan of a new defence for Alicante that would eventually not be carried out but would be the foundation of the bastion of San Carlos, the only defensive bastion carried out after the bombardment to protect against an attack from the sea

Conditioning systems by radiant surfaces: comparative analysis of thermal ceramic panels versus the conventional systems in a museum

    Get PDF
Radiant surface systems for heating and cooling operated by circulating water through capillary tubing provide for the user high comfort levels and significant energy savings. Compared to conventional air conditioning systems, radiant systems reduce up to six times the energy needed for distribution, a better comfort feeling as It does not need to impulse air at uncomfortable speeds, a low acoustic level and a reduction of thermal loads as it is allowed an average inner air temperature with a smaller thermal gradient with the outer air temperature. The performance of these systems is analyzed through a case-study, the Museum of the University of Alicante, where a radiant surface, integrated on a ceramic panel, is placed at the inner layer of the façade of the building. The research results show how important the thermal bridges are in the global energy performance of the building and it is possible to appreciate the energy savings versus the traditional systems

Graphic Representation and Military Architecture: The Trace of the Fuenterrabía Fortifications in the Current City

    Get PDF
Fuenterrabía, one of the most outstanding strongholds of the Basque Country, has historically been a strategic checkpoint on the land crossing between France and the Iberian Peninsula. Due to its military interest, it was many times besieged between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries for its possession and territorial control, main reason for the extraordinary importance of the development in its fortification system. Military engineers developed continuous fortification projects to adequately resist the advances in artillery and siege warfare tactics. This progress also affected the urban development, including the social and economic living standards of its inhabitants. This paper attempts to analyse the relationship between the evolution of the fortress and the urban development of Fuenterrabía through the recovery of the missing trace of its fortifications at its present location. By precise graphic overlays and research on the perfection of the outlines in historical drawing, the different traces of fortifications can be accurately determined, anticipating the location of foundations and buried vaults
