The role of the right inferior frontal gyrus in the pathogenesis of post-stroke psychosis.
Psychotic symptoms have previously been reported following right hemisphere brain injury. We sought to identify the specific neuroanatomical basis of delusions following stroke by studying a series of patients with post-stroke psychosis. Lesion overlap analysis was conducted on three individuals with delusions following right hemisphere stroke. These cases were compared with a control group of patients with similar anatomical damage. The main outcome measures were presence of delusions and presence of behavioural susceptibility. The right inferior frontal gyrus and underlying white matter, including the superior longitudinal fasciculus and anterior corona radiata, were involved in all three cases. All three had a preexisting untreated psychiatric disorder. In contrast, only one of nine control cases with equivalent lesions had evidence of previous psychiatric disorder (p = 0.0182, Fisher’s exact test), and this was being treated at the time of stroke. We provide clinical evidence from patients with structural brain lesions implicating damage to the right inferior frontal lobe in the generation of persistent psychosis following stroke. We suggest that preexisting psychiatric disease provided a behavioural susceptibility to develop delusions in these individuals. Inflight Radiometric Calibration of New Horizons' Multispectral Visible Imaging Camera (MVIC)
We discuss two semi-independent calibration techniques used to determine the
in-flight radiometric calibration for the New Horizons' Multi-spectral Visible
Imaging Camera (MVIC). The first calibration technique compares the observed
stellar flux to modeled values. The difference between the two provides a
calibration factor that allows the observed flux to be adjusted to the expected
levels for all observations, for each detector. The second calibration
technique is a channel-wise relative radiometric calibration for MVIC's blue,
near-infrared and methane color channels using observations of Charon and
scaling from the red channel stellar calibration. Both calibration techniques
produce very similar results (better than 7% agreement), providing strong
validation for the techniques used. Since the stellar calibration can be
performed without a color target in the field of view and covers all of MVIC's
detectors, this calibration was used to provide the radiometric keywords
delivered by the New Horizons project to the Planetary Data System (PDS). These
keywords allow each observation to be converted from counts to physical units;
a description of how these keywords were generated is included. Finally,
mitigation techniques adopted for the gain drift observed in the near-infrared
detector and one of the panchromatic framing cameras is also discussed
Worries about being judged versus being harmed: Disentangling the association of social anxiety and paranoia with schizotypy
Paranoia is a dimension of clinical and subclinical experiences in which others are believed to have harmful intentions. Mild paranoid concerns are relatively common in the general population, and more clinically severe paranoia shares features with social anxiety and is a key characteristic of schizotypy. Given that subclinical manifestations of schizotypy and paranoia may predict the occurrence of more severe symptoms, disentangling the associations of these related constructs may advance our understanding of their etiology; however no known studies to date have comprehensively evaluated how paranoia relates to social anxiety and schizotypy. The current research sought to examine the association of paranoia, assessed across a broad continuum of severity, with 1) the positive and negative schizotypy dimensions and 2) social anxiety. Specifically, the study tested a series of six competing, a priori models using confirmatory factor analysis in a sample of 862 young adults. As hypothesized, the data supported a four-factor model including positive schizotypy, negative schizotypy, social anxiety, and paranoia factors, suggesting that these are distinct constructs with differing patterns of interrelationships. Paranoia had a strong association with positive schizotypy, a moderate association with social anxiety, and a minimal association with negative schizotypy. The results are consistent with paranoia being part of a multidimensional model of schizotypy and schizophrenia. Prior studies treating schizotypy and schizophrenia as homogenous constructs often produce equivocal or non-replicable results because these dimensions are associated with distinct etiologies, presentations, and treatment responses; thus, the present conceptualization of paranoia within a multidimensional schizotypy framework should advance our understanding of these constructs. © 2014 Horton et al
Voice-selective prediction alterations in nonclinical voice hearers
Auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) are a cardinal symptom of psychosis but also occur in 6-13% of the general population. Voice perception is thought to engage an internal forward model that generates predictions, preparing the auditory cortex for upcoming sensory feedback. Impaired processing of sensory feedback in vocalization seems to underlie the experience of AVH in psychosis, but whether this is the case in nonclinical voice hearers remains unclear. The current study used electroencephalography (EEG) to investigate whether and how hallucination predisposition (HP) modulates the internal forward model in response to self-initiated tones and self-voices. Participants varying in HP (based on the Launay-Slade Hallucination Scale) listened to self-generated and externally generated tones or self-voices. HP did not affect responses to self vs. externally generated tones. However, HP altered the processing of the self-generated voice: increased HP was associated with increased pre-stimulus alpha power and increased N1 response to the self-generated voice. HP did not affect the P2 response to voices. These findings confirm that both prediction and comparison of predicted and perceived feedback to a self-generated voice are altered in individuals with AVH predisposition. The Small Satellites of Pluto as Observed by New Horizons
The New Horizons mission has provided resolved measurements of Pluto's moons
Styx, Nix, Kerberos, and Hydra. All four are small, with equivalent spherical
diameters of 40 km for Nix and Hydra and ~10 km for Styx and Kerberos.
They are also highly elongated, with maximum to minimum axis ratios of
2. All four moons have high albedos ( 50-90 %) suggestive of
a water-ice surface composition. Crater densities on Nix and Hydra imply
surface ages 4 Ga. The small moons rotate much faster than
synchronous, with rotational poles clustered nearly orthogonal to the common
pole directions of Pluto and Charon. These results reinforce the hypothesis
that the small moons formed in the aftermath of a collision that produced the

Childhood bullying, paranoid thinking, and the misappraisal of social threat: trouble at school
Background:Experiences of bullying predict the development of paranoia in school-age adolescents. While many instances of psychotic phenomena are transitory, maintained victimization can lead to increasingly distressing paranoid thinking. Furthermore, paranoid thinkers perceive threat in neutral social stimuli and are vigilant for environmental risk.
Aims:The present paper investigated the association between different forms of bullying and paranoid thinking, and the extent to which school-age paranoid thinkers overestimate threat in interpersonal situations.
Methods: Two hundred and thirty participants, aged between eleven and fourteen, were recruited from one secondary school in the UK. Participants completed a series of questionnaires hosted on the Bristol Online Survey tool. All data were collected in a classroom setting in quiet and standardized conditions.
Results: A significant and positive relationship was found between experiences of bullying and paranoid thinking: greater severity of bullying predicted more distressing paranoid thinking. Further, paranoid thinking mediated the relationship between bullying and overestimation of threat in neutral social stimuli.
Conclusion: Exposure to bullying is associated with distressing paranoid thinking and subsequent misappraisal of threat. As paranoid thinkers experience real and overestimated threat, the phenomena may persist
