    Mineral Processing by Short Circuits in Protoplanetary Disks

    Meteoritic chondrules were formed in the early solar system by brief heating of silicate dust to melting temperatures. Some highly refractory grains (Type B calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions, CAIs) also show signs of transient heating. A similar process may occur in other protoplanetary disks, as evidenced by observations of spectra characteristic of crystalline silicates. One possible environment for this process is the turbulent magnetohydrodynamic flow thought to drive accretion in these disks. Such flows generally form thin current sheets, which are sites of magnetic reconnection, and dissipate the magnetic fields amplified by a disk dynamo. We suggest that it is possible to heat precursor grains for chondrules and other high-temperature minerals in current sheets that have been concentrated by our recently described short-circuit instability. We extend our work on this process by including the effects of radiative cooling, taking into account the temperature dependence of the opacity; and by examining current sheet geometry in three-dimensional, global models of magnetorotational instability. We find that temperatures above 1600 K can be reached for favorable parameters that match the ideal global models. This mechanism could provide an efficient means of tapping the gravitational potential energy of the protoplanetary disk to heat grains strongly enough to form high-temperature minerals. The volume-filling nature of turbulent magnetic reconnection is compatible with constraints from chondrule-matrix complementarity, chondrule-chondrule complementarity, the occurrence of igneous rims, and compound chondrules. The same short-circuit mechanism may perform other high-temperature mineral processing in protoplanetary disks such as the production of crystalline silicates and CAIs.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, ApJL published versio

    Glacier-like forms on Mars

    More than 1300 glacier-like forms (GLFs) are located in Mars' mid-latitudes. These GLFs are predominantly composed of ice–dust mixtures and are visually similar to terrestrial valley glaciers, showing signs of downhill viscous deformation and an expanded former extent. However, several fundamental aspects of their behavior are virtually unknown, including temporal and spatial variations in mass balance, ice motion, landscape erosion and deposition, and hydrology. Here, we investigate the physical glaciology of martian GLFs. We use satellite images of specific examples and case studies to build on existing knowledge relating to (i) GLF current and former extent, exemplified via a GLF located in Phlegra Montes; (ii) indicators of GLF motion, focusing on the presence of surface crevasses on several GLFs; (iii) processes of GLF debris transfer, focusing on mapping and interpreting boulder trains on one GLF located in Protonilus Mensae, the analysis of which suggests a best-estimate mean GLF flow speed of 7.5 mm a−1; and (iv) GLF hydrology, focusing on supra-GLF gulley networks. On the basis of this information, we summarize the current state of knowledge of the glaciology of martian GLFs and identify future research avenues

    Analysis of gene expression in operons of Streptomyces coelicolor

    BACKGROUND: Recent studies have shown that microarray-derived gene-expression data are useful for operon prediction. However, it is apparent that genes within an operon do not conform to the simple notion that they have equal levels of expression. RESULTS: To investigate the relative transcript levels of intra-operonic genes, we have used a Z-score approach to normalize the expression levels of all genes within an operon to expression of the first gene of that operon. Here we demonstrate that there is a general downward trend in expression from the first to the last gene in Streptomyces coelicolor operons, in contrast to what we observe in Escherichia coli. Combining transcription-factor binding-site prediction with the identification of operonic genes that exhibited higher transcript levels than the first gene of the same operon enabled the discovery of putative internal promoters. The presence of transcription terminators and abundance of putative transcriptional control sequences in S. coelicolor operons are also described. CONCLUSION: Here we have demonstrated a polarity of expression in operons of S. coelicolor not seen in E. coli, bringing caution to those that apply operon prediction strategies based on E. coli 'equal-expression' to divergent species. We speculate that this general difference in transcription behavior could reflect the contrasting lifestyles of the two organisms and, in the case of Streptomyces, might also be influenced by its high G+C content genome.     Landscapes of polyphase glaciation: eastern Hellas Planitia, Mars

    <p>The mid-latitudes of Mars host numerous ice-related landforms that bear many similarities to terrestrial ice masses. This collection of landforms, termed viscous flow features (VFFs), is composed primarily of H<sub>2</sub>O ice and shows evidence of viscous deformation. Recent work has hypothesised that VFFs are the diminishing remains of once larger ice masses, formed during one or more previous ice ages, and the landscape therefore records evidence of polyphase glaciation. However, debate persists concerning the former extent and volume of ice, and style of former glaciations. The accompanying map (1:100,000 scale) presents a geomorphic and structural assessment of a glacial landscape in eastern Hellas Planitia, Mars. Here, we present a description of the features identified, comprising four geomorphic units (plains, lobate debris apron, degraded glacial material, and glacier-like form) and 16 structures (craters, moraine-like ridges, flow unit boundaries, arcuate transvers structures, longitudinal surface structures, ring-mold craters, terraces, medial moraine-like ridges, raised textured areas, flow-parallel and flow-transverse lineations, crevasses and crevasse traces, and ridge clusters).</p

    Critical care admission trends and outcomes in individuals with bronchiectasis in the UK

    Background: There are limited data on admission trends and outcomes of individuals with bronchiectasis admitted to intensive care (ICU). Using national critical care data, we analysed admissions to ICU and estimated outcomes in terms of mortality in individuals with bronchiectasis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) admitted to ICU. Methods: Using data from the Intensive Care National Audit and Research Centre, admissions from bronchiectasis and COPD from 1 January 2009 to 31 December 2013 were extracted. Crude admission rates for bronchiectasis and COPD were calculated and Poisson regression was used to estimate unadjusted annual admission rate ratios. We investigated changes to length of stay on ICU, ICU mortality and in-hospital mortality during the study period. We also compared mortality rates in people with bronchiectasis and COPD aged 70 or above. Results: We found an annual increase of 8% (95% Confidence Interval [CI] 2-15) in the number of ICU admissions from bronchiectasis, whilst the yearly increase in ICU admissions from COPD was 1% (95% CI 0.3-2). ICU and in-hospital mortality was higher in individuals with bronchiectasis compared with those with COPD, especially in people aged 70 years or above. Conclusion: Admission to ICU in people with bronchiectasis are uncommon, but are increasing in frequency over time, and carries a substantial mortality rate. This needs to be considered allocating health care resources and planning respiratory services

    Insufficient Reporting of Factors Associated with Exercise Referral Scheme Uptake, Attendance, and Adherence: A Systematic Review of Reviews

    Background: Exercise Referral Schemes (ERS) are prescribed programmes aimed at tackling physical inactivity and associated non-communicable disease. Inconsistencies in reporting, recording and delivering ERS make it challenging to identify what works, why, and for whom. Methods: PRISMA guided this narrative review of reviews. Fifteen electronic databases were searched for systematic reviews of ERS. Reviewers applied inclusion criteria and quality assessed via the AMSTAR tool. Data on uptake, attendance and adherence were extracted. Results: Eleven reviews met the inclusion criteria. AMSTAR quality was medium. Definitions of uptake varied within reviews. Uptake ranged from 35%-81%. Groups reported as more likely to take up ERS included, (i) females and (ii) older adults. Attendance was defined variably but ranged from 12%-49%. Men were more likely to attend ERS. Effect of medical diagnosis upon uptake and attendance was inconsistent. Exercises prescribed were unreported and therefore, adherence to exercise prescriptions was unreported. The influence of theoretically-informed approaches on uptake, attendance and adherence was generally lacking, however, self-determination, peer support and supervision support were reported as influencing attendance. Conclusions: There was insufficient reporting across studies about uptake, attendance and adherence. Complex interventions like ERS require consistent definitions, recording and reporting of these key facets, but this is not evident from the existing literature

    The match between what is prescribed and reasons for prescribing in exercise referral schemes:a mixed method study

    Background: Exercise referral schemes (ERS) aim to tackle non-communicable disease (NCD) by increasing physical activity levels through prescribed exercise. However, there is a sparsity of knowledge upon what exercises are prescribed and if they are targeted towards tackling NCD. Method: Mixed methods were employed. Quantitative data was extracted from exercise prescription cards of 50 participants and were assessed for frequency, intensity, type and time of prescribed exercise. Descriptive measures of aggregate data are expressed as median (range: minimum-maximum). Thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews generated qualitative data on exercise referral instructors’ experiences of prescribing exercise. Results: Thirty-eight different types of exercise were prescribed. Median prescription was 4 (1–11) exercises per session, at a moderate intensity. Participants were prescribed a median of 35 (5–70) minutes of aerobic exercise per referral session. Exercise referral instructors prescribed exercise to improve activities of daily living, promote independence and autonomy of participants, rather than explicitly targeting the referral condition. Conclusions: Knowledge that prescribed exercises are not explicitly targeted to the referral condition provides critical information in understanding the purpose of exercise prescription. Future evaluations of ERS should be mindful of this, that is, perceived outcomes might not match up to what is being prescribed within ERS.</p
