This paper studies the propensity to consume those durable goods that
are in the background of the industrial revolution, such as textiles. From the
information registered in towns located in various areas, the author answers
questions such as how much was consumed, what determined consumption
in the long run, and what factors conditioned the amount and the diversity
of the goods consumed. We also inquire what were the mechanism of sale
promotion, or it there were ince~tives for the production of manufactured
goods. In the end, the paper shows that industrialization has a multidimensional
origin.
This article deals with the evolution of the consumption of textiles -domestic
household and costumes- in a rural area in the region of Cantabria.
The documental base is a series of post-mortem inventories. The authors verify
a continuous rise of the textiles stock between 1750 and 1860, especialIy during
the first four decades of the nineteenth century. The consumption of textiles
also shows that trade is a form of social communication. No doubt, the possible changes in the consumption patterns come not only from economic factors,
but also from political, social and cultural variations.
en el sistema financiero español.ABSTRACT: In this article we analyse the importance
of the study of the history of the savings
banks in order to be able to achieve a better
understanding of the development of the
Spanish financial system. We single out the
significant role played by the savings banks
as agents of the system, in the sense of facilitating
the incorporation of a large slice of population
and thereby preventing their financial
exclusion. We also describe the major part played
by these institutions in regional development,
especially from the nineteen seventies
onwards. We underscore the contributions
made by the articles published in this number
of the journal, following a line of argument in
keeping with the arrangement of the studies
and the general aim of the publication: to
show the evolution of the savings banks from
the 19th to the 20th centuries, analyse their
contribution to the development of the regions,
and examine the institutional processes that
have enabled them to play a major role in the
The relative increase in wage income and, consequently, the improvement of living standards of the Spanish popular and middle classes between 1900 and 1935 led to an increase in their savings capacity. During these years the growth of savings balances generated a retail financial market that interested commercial banks, willing to enter into competition with charitable savings banks. The Ordinance Law of the Spanish banking system of 1921 and the creation of the Spanish Banking Control Council boosted interest in this competition to control retail savings. Commercial banks used the strategy of generating, within their organizations, “savings bank departments” that offered the savings products of the savings banks (charitable- social). In this paper we reconstruct the savings captured by commercial banks. It also analyses the structure of the client liabilities of the different types of commercial bank and banking areas.

Radiation and Dust Sensor for Mars Environmental Dynamic Analyzer Onboard M2020 Rover
32 pags., 26 figs., 3 tabs. -- This article belongs to the Section Remote SensorsThe Radiation and Dust Sensor is one of six sensors of the Mars Environmental Dynamics Analyzer onboard the Perseverance rover from the Mars 2020 NASA mission. Its primary goal is to characterize the airbone dust in the Mars atmosphere, inferring its concentration, shape and optical properties. Thanks to its geometry, the sensor will be capable of studying dust-lifting processes with a high temporal resolution and high spatial coverage. Thanks to its multiwavelength design, it will characterize the solar spectrum from Mars' surface. The present work describes the sensor design from the scientific and technical requirements, the qualification processes to demonstrate its endurance on Mars' surface, the calibration activities to demonstrate its performance, and its validation campaign in a representative Mars analog. As a result of this process, we obtained a very compact sensor, fully digital, with a mass below 1 kg and exceptional power consumption and data budget features. This work has been funded with the help of the Spanish National Research, Development

Banco de Santander, 1857-1934: the peculiarities of a local bank
Estos rasgos caracterizadores empezaron a perfilarse ya en sus orígenes como banco emisorThis paper aims to identify the reasons can help us to explain how a modest local bank, founded by a group of merchants that carried out their activity in the port of Santander in the central years of the 19th century, was able to sustain over time until joining the select club of the “big seven” of Spanish banking. It is concluded that three distinctive features should take into account in order to explain its longevity and prolonged accommodation to the local sphere throughout this long period: the strong family ties and instrumental friendship between its managers, the design of a financial policy with marked risk aversion and a protectionist attitude, against all competition. These distinctive features began to emerge in its very origins as an issuing ban
