    The purpose of the article is to highlight several training programs used to condition wrestlers, especially for the anaerobic endurance and explosive power. Conventional interval training programs as well as timed Olympic lifting programs are used for different training goals. Conventional interval training programs with different work to rest ratio are used to elicit adaptations in different energy systems, while timed Olympic lifts with different repetitions and sets as well as rest periods between repetitions and between sets are used to improve explosive power and the capability to carry out explosive movements under fatigue

    The Love Poems of Li Shang-yin

    The love poems of Li Shang-yin (813?-58) appear to derive from the Six Dynasties anthology of love poetry known as the Yü-t'ai hsinyung and the love poetry of Li Ho (791-817). But whereas earlier poems in folk song style had often pictured love as a group activity and were characterized by an air of delight and even abandon, Li Shang-yin's poetry deals exclusively with the love of the individual, often an individual who is being oppressed by the group, and dwells upon the gloom and sorrow associated with love. Yüan Chen (779-831), a poet somewhat older than Li Shang-yin, wrote love poetry that was clearly based upon his own personal experiences. The language of the poems indicates that they are addressed to a particular individual and are confessions of the poet's love for her, and the poems convey a clear picture of the place and manner in which the love affair proceeded. Li Shang-yin's love poetry, however, is quite the opposite, expressing not the love for any single individual but the generalized emotions of longing and despair, and deliberately eschewing a concrete description of the lover's surroundings in favor of the creation of an atmosphere of haziness and ambiguity. In this last respect they resemble the works of Li Ho, whom Li Shang-yin admired and took as his model, for Li Ho often employed circumlocations and substitute terms in order to avoid the names of things associated with everyday life. The deliberate haziness of Li Shang-yin's love poetry stands in marked contrast to the technique employed in his " Short Biography of Li Ho, " in which unreal events are given an air of reality through the use of concrete and detailed description. But it was some distant world of the imagination to which Li Shang-yin felt drawn, and his longing finds symbolic expression in the images of dreams, rain, and twilight which appear so often in his poetry. His love poems display the same characteristics, hovering as they do upon the border between the real and the unreal

    Archaeology of time – activation of installation space by the spect-actor

    An artistic installation implies theatre in situ, in that a/the space is transformed into a potential experiential encounter through design and scenography. This potential space then only requires the spectator to activate the full experience through embodied engagement with the installation, inciting visceral meaning-making. This embodied activation implies that the spectator then also becomes a performer, as they are simultaneously the ones physically causing the theatrical experience and the ones experiencing the elements designed for (their) interpretation. In this manner a heightened sense of becoming what Boal (1992) coined the ‘spect-actor’ is achieved. By activating the space through physical engagement with/in the installation where all the sensory receptors trigger a visceral response in the spect-actor, meaning-making occurs through phenomenology and implies a knowing body through personal- and socio-cultural interpretation. For this paper, the installations by renowned South African artist Jan van der Merwe are used as examples to argue for the emergence of the spect-actor in the role of activator. As an installation artist, Van der Merwe creates large artworks of intricately recreated tableaux often composed in discarded, rusted found material. Van der Merwe calls the found objects “artefacts of our time”. Thus, they assume an archaeological quality and become relics of a way of life, a civilisation degenerated and fossilised though time and rust. The spect-actor is both then the site and cite of activation where the time and space converge into an ephemeral experience.     The mechanisms conditioning doctoral supervision development in public universities across South Africa

    This study offers a social realist account of how South African public institutions develop emerging supervisors. The study addresses the need for supervision development across South African public higher education universities. The purpose of the study was to answer the question “What mechanisms condition the development and support of emerging doctoral supervisors across South African public universities?” To examine this question, analytical dualism was used to separate the roles of the ‘people’ (agents) from the ‘parts’ (structure and culture) to examine their interplay. The study was qualitative, and the data was generated through documents, an online survey, and semi-structured interviews. One hundred and eighty-six participants responded to the survey and fifty-four people were interviewed. The participants came from twenty of the twenty-six public higher education universities and represent a large range of disciplines. The study findings revealed that emerging supervisors were often simply ‘thrown into the deep-end’ as they had to work out how to supervise by learning from their students and using the experience gained while they were being supervised. This was experienced as highly problematic by the participants who shared this understanding. Secondly, the findings suggest that where there were developmental events in place, some were not well received. For example where those providing the training were not regarded as credible because they lacked the supervision experience or because the interventions were seen to be too ad hoc and generic. There were calls for more discipline-specific interventions and collaborative spaces where emerging supervisors could engage with experienced supervisors rather than being instructed in a generic best-practice of ‘how to supervise’. The findings indicated that the lines between co-supervision and mentoring were often blurred, and both were used as another form of supervision development. Such relationships provided a useful means for emerging supervisors to come to understand the complex pedagogy of postgraduate supervision but were at times constrained by power imbalances. It was evident across the data that supervision is a special form of teaching and needs to be conceptualised at least in part as a pedagogy.     The anti-inflammatory effects of dimethyl fumarate in astrocytes involve glutathione and haem oxygenase-1

    DMF (dimethyl fumarate) exerts anti-inflammatory and pro-metabolic effects in a variety of cell types, and a formulation (BG-12) is being evaluated for monotherapy in multiple sclerosis patients. DMF modifies glutathione (GSH) levels that can induce expression of the anti-inflammatory protein HO-1 (haem oxygenase-1). In primary astrocytes and C6 glioma cells, BG-12 dose-dependently suppressed nitrite production induced by either LI [LPS (lipopolysaccharide) at 1 \u3bcg/ml plus IFN\u3b3 (interferon \u3b3) at 20 units/ml] or a mixture of pro-inflammatory cytokines, with greater efficacy in C6 cells. BG-12 reduced NOS2 (nitric oxide synthase 2) mRNA levels and activation of a NOS2 promoter, reduced nuclear levels of NF-\u3baB (nuclear factor \u3baB) p65 subunit and attenuated loss of I\u3baB\u3b1 (inhibitory \u3baB\u3b1) in both cell types, although with greater effects in astrocytes. In astrocytes, LI decreased mRNA levels for GSHr (GSH reductase) and GCL (c-glutamylcysteine synthetase), and slightly suppressed GSHs (GSH synthetase) mRNAs. Co-treatment with BG-12 prevented those decreased and increased levels above control values. In contrast, LI reduced GSHp (GSH peroxidase) and GCL in C6 cells, and BG-12 had no effect on those levels. BG-12 increased nuclear levels of Nrf2 (nuclear factor-erythroid 2 p45 subunit-related factor 2), an inducer of GSH-related enzymes, in astrocytes but not C6 cells. In astrocytes, GSH was decreased by BG-12 at 2 h and increased at 24 h. Prior depletion of GSH using buthionine-sulfoximine increased the ability of BG-12 to reduce nitrites. In astrocytes, BG-12 increased HO-1 mRNA levels and effects on nitrite levels were blocked by an HO-1 inhibitor. These results demonstrate that BG-12 suppresses inflammatory activation in astrocytes and C6 glioma cells, but with distinct mechanisms, different dependence on GSH and different effects on transcription factor activation

    Precise determination of low energy electronuclear Hamiltonian for LiY1x_{1-x}Hox_{x}F4_{4}

    We use complementary optical spectroscopy methods to directly measure the lowest crystal-field energies of the rare-earth quantum magnet LiY1x_{1-x}Hox_{x}F4_{4}, including their hyperfine splittings, with more than 10 times higher resolution than previous work. We are able to observe energy level splittings due to the 6Li^6\mathrm{Li} and 7Li^7\mathrm{Li} isotopes, as well as non-equidistantly spaced hyperfine transitions originating from dipolar and quadrupolar hyperfine interactions. We provide refined crystal field parameters and extract the dipolar and quadrupolar hyperfine constants AJ=0.02703±0.00003{A_J=0.02703\pm0.00003} cm1\textrm{cm}^{-1} and B=0.04±0.01{B= 0.04 \pm0.01} cm1\textrm{cm}^{-1}, respectively. Thereupon we determine all crystal-field energy levels and magnetic moments of the 5I8^5I_8 ground state manifold, including the (non-linear) hyperfine corrections. The latter match the measurement-based estimates. The scale of the non-linear hyperfine corrections sets an upper bound for the inhomogeneous line widths that would still allow for unique addressing of a selected hyperfine transition. e.g. for quantum information applications.     Atomic-number dependence of the magnetic-sublevel population in the autoionization state formed in dielectronic recombination

    The magnetic-sublevel population of the autoionization state formed in dielectronic recombination (DR) of highly charged heavy ions has been experimentally investigated by combining two types of measurements with an electron beam ion trap. The two different measurements are the differential x-ray measurement at 90∘ with respect to the electron beam and the integral resonance-strength measurement. The alignment parameter, which denotes the magnetic-sublevel population distribution, has been obtained for the autoionization states [1s2s22p1/2]1 formed in DR of Li-like Pr (atomic number Z=59) and Ho (Z=67). This work is a complement to our previous work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 073002 (2012)] on Li-like Au (Z=79). The experimental results are in reasonable agreement with theoretical predictions, and a strong Z-dependent tendency due to the Breit interaction has been confirmed

    Magnetic domain dynamics in an insulating quantum ferromagnet

    The statistics and form of avalanches in a driven system reveal the nature of the underlying energy landscape and dynamics. In conventional metallic ferromagnets, eddy-current back action can dominate the dynamics. Here, we study Barkhausen noise in Li(Ho,Y)F_4, an insulating Ising ferromagnet that cannot sustain eddy currents. For large avalanches at temperatures approaching the Curie point, we find a symmetric response free of drag effects. In the low-temperature limit, drag effects contribute to the dynamics, which we link to enhanced pinning from local random fields that are enabled by the microscopic dipole-coupled Hamiltonian (the Ising model in transverse field)
