Individual-level loss aversion in riskless and risky choices
Loss aversion can occur in riskless and risky choices. Yet, there is no evidence whether people who are loss averse in riskless choices are also loss averse in risky choices. We measure individual-level loss aversion in riskless choices in an endowment effect experiment by eliciting both WTA and WTP from each of our 360 subjects (randomly selected customers of a car manufacturer). All subjects also participate in a simple lottery choice task which arguably measures loss aversion in risky choices. We find substantial heterogeneity in both measures of loss aversion. Loss aversion in the riskless choice task and loss aversion in the risky choice task are highly significantly and strongly positively correlated. We find that in both choice tasks loss aversion increases in age, income, and wealth, and decreases in education.Loss aversion, endowment effect, field experiments
Bodenbesiedelnde Spinnen (Arachnida, Araneae) eines Kiefernforstes bei Stücken in Brandenburg, Deutschland
Ground inhabiting spiders were investigated during the vegetation periods of 1996, 1998 and 2000 in four pine forests of Brandenburg, Germany. 1995 three of them were managed in different ways and one area served as a control. In total 105 different species were found and the lowest number of species was found on the control area. Due to the management the pine forests got opened and xerophilous species could settle the areas. In total a heterogeneous species community was found on each area. From year to year high rates of species turnover were measured even for the dominant species (> 5 % of all collected individuals per area and year). Some endangered species in Brandenburg were collected as well

Time resolved fluorescence measurements on Tb3+ and Mn2+ doped glasses
Tb3+ (4f8) and Mn2+ (3d5) ions, known as active luminescent centres for blue, green and red fluorescence, were doped in various fluoride, phosphate and Silicate glasses with well known structure. Narrow bands of f-f transitions with strong emission of Tb3+ in the blue, green and red and broad bands of d-d transitions of Mn2+ were measured with green emission in high optical basicity glasses with tetrahedrally coordinated Mn2+. Orange to red Mn2+ emission was found in glasses with low optical basicity where Mn2+ is octahedrally coordinated. Lifetimes, τe, in the range of milliseconds were recorded in dependence of glass composition and dopant concentration for both Tb3+ and Mn2+ doped glasses. Fluorescence lifetimes are as well shortened by higher basicity of the glasses as by increasing dopant concentration
New faunistic records and remarks on Dermestidae (Coleoptera) - Part 20
The three species Globicornis cypriensis Háva & Herrmann, 2014 stat. nov., Thorictus westwoodi Wollaston, 1854 stat. nov., Dermestes (Dermestes) cernyi Háva, 2009 stat. nov. are moved to new status. Two new synonyms are proposed: Dermestes (Dermestes) palmi Sjöberg, 1950 (= Dermestes hoeltzermanni Kozminykh, 1998 syn. nov.); Anthrenus (Anthrenus) bilyi Háva, 2000 (= Anthrenus montanus Zhantiev, 2009 syn. nov.). Fauvel. Corrections to Holloway´s paper (2019) on Spanish Dermestidae are provided. 41 taxa are new records for the local fauna all over the World
Supportive treatment using a compression garment vest of painful sternal instability following deep surgical wound infection: a case report

Abstract

Introduction

Sternal dehiscence and instability poses a significant cause of persistent pain and limited quality of life following hospital discharge for 0.2% to 5% of patients who have undergone median sternotomy for open heart surgery. We report a successful, conservative, supportive long-term therapy of painful sternal non-union using a customized compression garment vest.

Case presentation

We report a case of painful sternal instability following open heart surgery in a 74-year-old Caucasian man. The complicating factors of obesity (body mass index of 40), renal failure, insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and absolute arrhythmia with atrial fibrillation were present.

Conclusion

A number of studies have demonstrated the efficacy of surgical interventions for secondary sternal stabilization, but individual patients may reject this option or may be, for other reasons, no longer operable. The task of primary care physicians and other health care providers is to offer this group of patients an alternative option for pragmatic, inexpensive and effective supportive therapy, of which compression garments are an example.</p
