Cross sections for the production of fragments with Z greater than or equal to 8 by fragmentation of Z greater than or equal to 9 and less than or equal to 26 nuclei
Charge changing nuclear collisions in plastic nuclear track detectors were studied using a new experimental technique of automatic track measurement for etched tracks in plastic detectors. Partial cross sections for the production of fragments of charge Z approximately 8 were measured for projectile nuclei of charge 9 approximately Z approximately 26 in the detector material CR39 and in silver. for this purpose three independent experiments were performed using Bevalac beams. The first one was an exposure of a stack of CR39 plastic plates to 1.8 GeV/nucl. Ar-40 nuclei. The second one was an exposure of another CR39 stack of 1.7 GeV/nucl. Fe-56 projectiles. In the third experiment a mixed stack of CR39 plates and silver foils was irradiated with 1.7 GeV/nucl. Fe-56 nuclei. Thus the measurement of nuclear cross sections in a light target (CR39 = C12H18O7) and as well in a heavy target (silver) was possible
Measurement of direct neutron capture by neutron-rich sulfur isotopes
Thermal neutron capture cross sections for S(n,)S and
S(n,)S have been measured and spectroscopic factors of
the final states have been extracted. The calculated direct-capture cross
sections reproduce the experimental data.Comment: 4 pages (uses espcrc1.sty), 1 postscript figure (uses psfig),

Direct neutron capture cross sections of 62Ni in the s-process energy range
Direct neutron capture on 62Ni is calculated in the DWBA and the cross
sections in the energy range relevant for s-process nucleosynthesis are given.
It is confirmed that the thermal value of the capture cross section contains a
subthreshold resonance contribution. Contrary to previous investigations it is
found that the capture at higher energies is dominated by p-waves, thus leading
to a considerably increased cross section at s-process energies and a modified
energy dependence.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure, corrected typos in Eq. 6 and subsequent paragrap
Direct neutron capture of 48Ca at kT = 52 keV
The neutron capture cross section of 48Ca was measured relative to the known
gold cross section at kT = 52 keV using the fast cyclic activation technique.
The experiment was performed at the Van-de-Graaff accelerator, Universitaet
Tuebingen. The new experimental result is in good agreement with a calculation
using the direct capture model. The 1/v behaviour of the capture cross section
at thermonuclear energies is confirmed, and the adopted reaction rate which is
based on several previous experimental investigations remains unchanged.Comment: 9 pages (uses Revtex), 2 postscript figures, accepted for publication

The Advisory System for Fertilizer Application in the German Democratic Republic Emphasizing the Minimization of Nitrogen Pollution
This paper describes one of three operational state computer systems used to give advice on agricultural problems in the GDR. The system, employed nationwide, is oriented to providing advice about fertilizer application on farms or even single fields. Of the other two computer systems, one is described in IIASA CP-79-18, "Environmental Problems of Agriculture II: Pest and Weed Management: Monitoring and Forecasting in the German Democratic Republic." The remaining operational system is applied to irrigation.
At IIASA's request, the present paper emphasizes the methods of the system for determining the optimal amount of fertilizer to apply which allows for maximum agricultural production without wasting resources or harming the environment. The paper thus offers another contribution to the solution of nonpoint source chemical pollution problems which have been intensively studied at IIASA both in-house and in cooperation with other institutions
