The analysis of the introduction perspectivity of 18 new for the higher spore bearing plants collection of Academician O.V. Fomin Botanical Garden fern species has been carried out. It is established that “very perspective” there were 11 species and cultivares (Adiantum pedatum L. cv. Minor, A. venustum D. Don, Asplenium fontanum (L.) Bernh. in Schrader, Polystichum andersonii M. Hopkins, P. makinoi (Tagawa) Tagawa, P. neolobatum Nakai, Phyllitis scolopendrium (L.) Newm. cv. Crispa, Phegopteris hexanoptera (Michx.) Fée, Cyrtomium macrophyllum (Makino) Tagawa, C. lonchitioides (H. Christ) H. Christ, Athyrium filix-femina (L.) Roth cv. Minutissimum). They are recommen ded for wide use in the Polissia and Forrest-Step zones. Minor, A. venustum D. Don, Asplenium fontanum (L.) Bernh. in Schrader, Polystichum andersonii M. Hopkins, P. makinoi (Tagawa) Tagawa, P. neolobatum Nakai, Phyllitis scolopendrium (L.) Newm. cv. Nuclear Structure in the UCOM Framework: From Realistic Interactions to Collective Excitations

    Get PDF
The Unitary Correlation Operator Method (UCOM) provides a means for nuclear structure calculations starting from realistic NN potentials. The dominant short-range central and tensor correlations are described explicitly by a unitary transformation. The application of UCOM in the context of the no-core shell model provides insight into the interplay between dominant short-range and residual long-range correlations in the nuclear many-body problem. The use of the correlated interaction within Hartree-Fock, many-body perturbation theory, and Random Phase Approximation gives access to various nuclear structure observables throughout the nuclear chart.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, invited talk at the 2nd Int. Situating graphs as workplace knowledge

We investigate the use and knowledge of graphs in the context of a large industrial factory. We are particularly interested in the question of "transparency", a question that has been extensively considered in the general literature on tool use, and more recently, by Michael Roth and his colleagues in the context of scientific work. Roth uses the notion of transparency to characterise instances of graph use by highly educated scientists in cases where the context was familiar: the scientists were able to read the situation "through" the graph. This paper explores the limits of the validity of the transparency metaphor. We present two vignettes of actual graph use by a factory worker, and contrast his actions and knowledge with that of a highly-qualified process engineer working on the same production line. We note that in neither case were the graphs transparent. We argue that a fuller account that describes a spectrum of transparency is needed, and we seek to achieve this by adopting some elements of a semiotic approach that enhance a strictly activity-theoretical view

Roth\u27s Contribution to the Narrativization of Illness

    Get PDF
In her article Roth\u27s Contribution to the Narrativization of Illness Miriam Jaffe-Foger argues that Philipp Roth\u27s fiction represents him as an empath, a writer who prescribes for modern medicine a dose of humanity in listening to the pain of others. Using Roth\u27s The Anatomy Lesson, The Dying Animal, and Exit Ghost as primary source material in combination with theories from medical anthropology, Jaffe-Foger suggests that Roth is an inspiration for the field of narrative medicine. Jaffe-Foger examines the art in organizing narratives to tell these stories. Jaffe-Foger also argues against misogynist views of Roth as he represents woman\u27s bodies, offering a modern reading of the relationship between illness and sexuality

The “charnel house of historic memories”: Salonica as Site of Transcultural Memory in the Published Writings of Cecil Roth

    Get PDF
Following his visit to Salonica in 1946 Cecil Roth became the first historian to engage with the significance of the Holocaust in Salonica. This essay analyses Roth’s published writings on Salonica to examine how they radically revise our understanding of Holocaust memory. Roth identifies Holocaust memory at an extraordinarily early moment. By paralleling the Holocaust and the Spanish Inquisition, Roth depicts Holocaust memory as transhistorical. Most transformatively Roth reveals the transcultural memories of Sephardi Jews as an object for Nazi destruction in the Holocaust. Roth’s Salonica writings underline the importance of Jewish Salonica as a site of transcultural memory. Focusing on these writings, my essay recovers Roth as a valuable source for contemporary memory, transcultural and Jewish studies

Occurrence of the milliped, Hiltonius carpinus carpinus Chamberlin, 1943 (Spirobolida: Spirobolidae), in the United States and new records from Mexico

Hiltonius carpinus carpinus Chamberlin, 1943 (Spirobolida: Spirobolidae), is authoritatively recorded from the United States for the first time; it is known only from southern/southeastern Arizona but should be expected in adjoining counties of New Mexico. The northernmost locality is the Pinaleno Mountains, Graham County, and its distribution extends to southern Mexico; the other subspecies, H. c. vulcan (Chamberlin, 1953), occurs in Guatemala. The range of H. c. carpinus includes the type locality of the enigmatic H. fossulifer (Pocock, 1908), lending credence to prior suggestions that the names are synonymous. Three new Mexican states – Durango, Jalisco, and Nuevo León – are documented for H. c. carpinus
