    Measurements of farfield sound generation from a flow-excited cavity

    Results of 1/3-octave-band spectral measurements of internal pressures and the external acoustic field of a tangentially blown rectangular cavity are compared. Proposed mechanisms for sound generation are reviewed, and spectra and directivity plots of cavity noise are presented. Directivity plots show a slightly modified monopole pattern. Frequencies of cavity response are calculated using existing predictions and are compared with those obtained experimentally. The effect of modifying the upstream boundary layer on the noise was investigated, and its effectiveness was found to be a function of cavity geometry and flow velocity

    Seismic Imaging Of The Velocity Structure And The Location Of A Hydrofrac In A Geothermal Reservoir

    The Los Alamos Hot Dry Rock Reservoir is an experimental geothermal project in north-central New Mexico. A fractured zone was created within otherwise impermeable igneous and metamorphic rock by injecting water into a borehole under high pressure, at about 3.5 km depth. During the injection process, the seismic waves created by the fracturing events were recorded by seismometers located in four nearby boreholes. A subset of the arrival times from these microearthquakes is iteratively inverted for the three-dimensional P-wave and S-wave velocity structures and the hypocenter parameters, using the separation of parameters technique. The inversion results indicate that the P-wave and S-wave velocities decrease by at least 20% within the fractured zone. Also, the hypocenters are rotated into a more compact distribution, elative to the initiallocations found using a homogeneous velocity model, suggesting that the hypocenter locations are significantly improved.United States.     BRCC36A is epistatic to BRCA1 in DNA crosslink repair and homologous recombination in Arabidopsis thaliana

    BRCA1 is a well-known tumor suppressor protein in mammals, involved in multiple cellular processes such as DNA repair, chromosome segregation and chromatin remodeling. Interestingly, homologs of BRCA1 and several of its complex partners are also found in plants. As the respective mutants are viable, in contrast to mammalian mutants, detailed analyses of their biological role is possible. Here we demonstrate that the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana harbors two homologs of the mammalian BRCA1 interaction partner BRCC36, AtBRCC36A and AtBRCC36B. Mutants of both genes as well as the double mutants are fully fertile and show no defects in development. We were able to show that mutation of one of the homologs, AtBRCC36A, leads to a severe defect in intra- and interchromosomal homologous recombination (HR). A HR defect is also apparent in Atbrca1 mutants. As the Atbrcc36a/Atbrca1 double mutant behaves like the single mutants of AtBRCA1 and AtBRCC36A both proteins seem to be involved in a common pathway in the regulation of HR. AtBRCC36 is also epistatic to AtBRCA1 in DNA crosslink repair. Upon genotoxic stress, AtBRCC36A is transferred into the nucleus

    Psi-floor diagrams and a Caporaso-Harris type recursion

    Floor diagrams are combinatorial objects which organize the count of tropical plane curves satisfying point conditions. In this paper we introduce Psi-floor diagrams which count tropical curves satisfying not only point conditions but also conditions given by Psi-classes (together with points). We then generalize our definition to relative Psi-floor diagrams and prove a Caporaso-Harris type formula for the corresponding numbers. This formula is shown to coincide with the classical Caporaso-Harris formula for relative plane descendant Gromov-Witten invariants. As a consequence, we can conclude that in our case relative descendant Gromov-Witten invariants equal their tropical counterparts.Comment: minor changes to match the published versio

    Semi-Analytical Models for Lensing by Dark Halos: I. Splitting Angles

    We use the semi-analytical approach to analyze gravitational lensing of quasars by dark halos in various cold dark matter (CDM) cosmologies, in order to determine the sensitivity of the prediction probabilities of images separations to the input assumptions regarding halos and cosmologies. The mass function of dark halos is assumed to be given by the Press-Schechter function. The mass density profile of dark halos is alternatively taken to be the singular isothermal sphere (SIS), the Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) profile, or the generalized NFW profile. The cosmologies include: the Einstein-de Sitter model (SCDM), the open model (OCDM), and the flat \Lambda-model (LCDM). As expected, we find that the lensing probability is extremely sensitive to the mass density profile of dark halos, and somewhat less so to the mean mass density in the universe, and the amplitude of primordial fluctuations. NFW halos are very much less effective in producing multiple images than SIS halos. However, none of these models can completely explain the current observations: the SIS models predict too many large splitting lenses, while the NFW models predict too few small splitting lenses. This indicates that there must be at least two populations of halos in the universe. A combination of SIS and NFW halos can reasonably reproduce the current observations if we choose the mass for the transition from SIS to NFW to be ~ 10^{13} solar masses. Additionally, there is a tendency for CDM models to have too much power on small scales, i.e. too much mass concentration; and it appears that the cures proposed for other apparent difficulties of CDM would help here as well, an example being the warm dark matter (WDM) variant which is shown to produce large splitting lenses fewer than the corresponding CDM model by one order of magnitude.Comment: 46 pages, including 13 figures.     On the Lebesgue measure of Li-Yorke pairs for interval maps

    We investigate the prevalence of Li-Yorke pairs for C2C^2 and C3C^3 multimodal maps ff with non-flat critical points. We show that every measurable scrambled set has zero Lebesgue measure and that all strongly wandering sets have zero Lebesgue measure, as does the set of pairs of asymptotic (but not asymptotically periodic) points. If ff is topologically mixing and has no Cantor attractor, then typical (w.r.t. two-dimensional Lebesgue measure) pairs are Li-Yorke; if additionally ff admits an absolutely continuous invariant probability measure (acip), then typical pairs have a dense orbit for f×ff \times f. These results make use of so-called nice neighborhoods of the critical set of general multimodal maps, and hence uniformly expanding Markov induced maps, the existence of either is proved in this paper as well. For the setting where ff has a Cantor attractor, we present a trichotomy explaining when the set of Li-Yorke pairs and distal pairs have positive two-dimensional Lebesgue measure.Comment: 41 pages, 3 figure
