    Welfare-Enhancing Collusion in the Presence of a Competitive Fringe

    Following the structure of many commodity markets, we consider a few large firms and a competitive fringe of many small suppliers choosing quantities in an infinite-horizon setting subject to demand shocks. We show that a collusive agreement among the large firms may not only bring an output contraction but also an output expansion (relative to the noncollusive output level). The latter occurs during booms, when the fringe’s market share is more important, and is due to the strategic substitutability of quantities (we will never observe an output-expanding collusion in a price-setting game). In addition and depending on the fringe’s market share the time at which maximal collusion is most difficult to sustain can be either at booms or recessions.

    Jane O’Leary and Her Approach to Contemporary Music for Clarinet and Bass Clarinet

    American-born Irish composer Jane O’Leary is one of the most accomplished participants on the Irish New Music scene. Although trained as a pianist, her career has also been closely linked to the clarinet and bass clarinet through collaborative work she has undertaken with outstanding performers such as Paul Roe and Harry Sparnaay. Thus, this thesis explores this composer’s contributions to the contemporary repertoire for clarinet and bass clarinet. In order to examine O’Leary’s oeuvre for clarinet and bass clarinet, this research project analyses two of her most remarkable solo pieces for these instruments, Within/Without and a piacere, by determining not only their musical structure and compositional style, but, also, by investigating their context, creative process and the impact of her collaborative work with performers on the final outcome. Furthermore, a key aspect of this thesis is the fact that it is grounded on interviews with O’Leary and Roe, thus providing first-hand testimony on their careers, musical relationship and the collaborative input of Roe on O’Leary’s compositions. The findings from this investigation reveal that O’Leary’s repertoire for clarinet and bass clarinet has grown exponentially since 2000, when the collaboration with eminent performers started. Additionally, her pieces share unique characteristics and sonority, since the composer tries to explore the capabilities of these instruments in terms of colour, timbre and expressivity. Finally, the active role of the performer was proven to be essential in the co-creative process, as well as their responsibility with regards to the evolution of O’Leary’s works over the years

Se pretende localizar el emprendimiento en una zona céntrica del departamento Ciudad de Mendoza, cuya ambientación cumplirá con el concepto de comodidad, calidez, relajación y buen gusto, brindando una atención personalizada a sus clientes donde puedan disfrutar de momentos agradables tanto solos o acompañados, con la familia, con los amigos, como así también, podrán disponer de un espacio para realizar reuniones de distinto tipo.     Playing with Dragons: A ludic experience as an introduction to phylogenetic concepts in biodiversity teaching

    Se propone una actividad lúdica que tiene como fin introducir a los alumnos en el pensamiento de árbol. Los árboles filogenéticos son la forma adecuada de expresar la biodiversidad en el marco teórico de las actuales hipótesis evolutivas, por lo que deberían tomar un lugar central en el entendimiento público de la evolución. Su mala interpretación, sumada a la escasa disponibilidad de material didáctico en idioma español para docentes conduce a la repetición sistemática de errores. De esta manera, los alumnos terminarán por incorporar nociones equivocadas que se verán acrecentadas por los problemas epistemológicos en el aprendizaje de teorías evolutivas. La actividad lúdica como proceso de aprendizaje proporciona herramientas potentes a la hora de adquirir conceptos que requieren abstracción. Los juegos en la enseñanza de ciencias naturales, tanto con enfoques clásicos o más modernos, como el aprendizaje basado en juegos, proporcionan a los jugadores/aprendices una sensación de logro y mejoran la adquisición de conocimientos. En este contexto, la presente propuesta invita a acercarse al trabajocientífico y permite asimilar conceptos abstractos mediante la resolución de acertijos evolutivos. La actividad ofrece los conceptos adecuados para la introducción al estudio de procesos evolutivos y muestra una forma simple de presentarle al alumno la diversidad de la vida en nuestro planeta según los paradigmas actuales dentro del diseño curricular de enseñanza media.The aim of the present paper is to introduce students to tree-thinking through a ludic activity. Phylogenetic trees are the appropriate way to explain biodiversity under the theoretical framework of current evolutionary hypothesis and they should take a central place in public understanding of evolution. Misinterpretation of phylogenies plus the unavailability of didactic material in Spanish for teachers ends up in the reproduction of misunderstandings on the evolutionary theory. The combination of these errors with epistemological problems of evolutionary theories learning generates even more confusion in these subjects. The ludic activity as a learning process provides powerful tools when it comes to acquiring concepts that require abstraction in contents. Educational natural science games, both classical and modern approaches as Game-based learning theory, provide a sense of achievement to players/apprentices and they improve knowledge acquisition. In this context, the activity proposed here invites students to think under the scientific method and it allows them to assimilate abstract concepts by the resolution of evolutionary riddles. This activity gives the concepts to introduce scholars to the study of evolutionary processes, and the diversity of life on Earth under the current educational paradigms

    Exploitation of prokaryotic expression systems based on the salicylate-dependent control circuit encompassing nahR/Psal ::xylS2 for biotechnological applications

Controlling gene overexpression becomes a critical issue when protein production is desired. In addition to several aspects regarding toxicity or plasmid instability, tight control of gene expression is an essential factor in biotechnological processes. Thus, the search for better-controlled circuits is an important issue among biotechnologists. Traditionally, expression systems involve a single regulatory protein operating over a target promoter. However, these circuits are limited on their induction ratios (e.g., by their restriction in the maximal expression capacity, by their leakiness under non-induced conditions). Due to these limitations, regulatory cascades, which are far more efficient, are necessary for biotechnological applications. Thus, regulatory circuits with two modules operating in cascade offer a significant advantage. In this review, we describe the regulatory cascade based on two salicylate-responsive transcriptional regulators of Pseudomonas putida (nahR/P sal::xylS2), its properties, and contribution to a tighter control over heterologous gene expression in different applications. Nowadays, heterologous expression has been proven to be an indispensable tool for tackling basic biological questions, as well as for developing biotechnological applications. As the nature of the protein of interest becomes more complex, biotechnologists find that a tight control of gene expression is a key factor which conditions the success of the downstream purification process, as well as the interpretation of the results in other type of studies. Fortunately, different expression systems can be found in the market, each of them with their own pros and cons. In this review we discuss the exploitation of prokaryotic expression systems based on a promising expression system, the salicylate-dependent control circuit encompassing nahR/P sal::xylS2, as well as some of the improvements that have been done on this system to exploit it more efficiently in the context of both biotechnological applications and basic research.Peer Reviewe
