Impact of Sea Ice Drift Retrieval Errors, Discretization and Grid Type on Calculations of Sea Ice Deformation
We studied two issues to be considered in the calculation of parameters characterizing sea
ice deformation: the effect of uncertainties in an automatically retrieved sea ice drift field, and the
influence of the type of drift vector grid. Sea ice deformation changes the local ice mass balance
and the interaction between atmosphere, ice, and ocean, and constitutes a hazard to marine traffic
and operations. Due to numerical effects, the results of deformation retrievals may predict, e.g.,
openings and closings of the ice cover that do not exist in reality. We focus specifically on fields
of ice drift obtained from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery and analyze the Propagated
Drift Retrieval Error (PDRE) and the Boundary Definition Error (BDE). From the theory of error
propagation, the PDRE for the calculated deformation parameters can be estimated. To quantify the
BDE, we devise five different grid types and compare theoretical expectation and numerical results
for different deformation parameters assuming three scenarios: pure divergence, pure shear, and a
mixture of both. Our findings for both sources of error help to set up optimal deformation retrieval
schemes and are also useful for other applications working with vector fields and scalar parameters
derived therefrom
A method to improve high-resolution sea ice drift retrievals in the presence of deformation zones

resolution are valuable for understanding kinematic behavior and deformation processes of the
ice at different spatial scales. Ice deformation causes temporal changes in patterns observed in
sequences of SAR images; which makes it difficult to retrieve ice displacement with algorithms based
on correlation and feature identification techniques. Here, we propose two extensions to a pattern
matching algorithm, with the objective to improve the reliability of the retrieved sea ice drift field at
spatial resolutions of a few hundred meters. Firstly, we extended a reliability assessment proposed
in an earlier study, which is based on analyzing texture and correlation parameters of SAR image
pairs, with the aim to reject unreliable pattern matches. The second step is specifically adapted to the
presence of deformation features to avoid the erasing of discontinuities in the drift field. We suggest
an adapted detection scheme that identifies linear deformation features (LDFs) in the drift vector field,
and detects and replaces outliers after considering the presence of such LDFs in their neighborhood.
We validate the improvement of our pattern matching algorithm by comparing the automatically
retrieved drift to manually derived reference data for three SAR scenes acquired over different sea ice
covered regions
Decoupling between ecosystem photosynthesis and transpiration: a last resort against overheating
Ecosystems are projected to face extreme high temperatures more frequently in the near future. Various biotic coping strategies exist to prevent heat stress. Controlled experiments have recently provided evidence for continued transpiration in woody plants during high air temperatures, even when photosynthesis is inhibited. Such a decoupling of photosynthesis and transpiration would represent an effective strategy (âknown as leaf or canopy coolingâ) to prevent lethal leaf temperatures. At the ecosystem scale, continued transpiration might dampen the development and propagation of heat extremes despite further desiccating soils. However, at the ecosystem scale, evidence for the occurrence of this decoupling is still limited. Here, we aim to investigate this mechanism using eddy-covariance data of thirteen woody ecosystems located in Australia and a causal graph discovery algorithm. Working at half-hourly time resolution, we find evidence for a decoupling of photosynthesis and transpiration in four ecosystems which can be classified as Mediterranean woodlands. The decoupling occurred at air temperatures above 35 °C. At the nine other investigated woody sites, we found that vegetation CO2 exchange remained coupled to transpiration at the observed high air temperatures. Ecosystem characteristics suggest that the canopy energy balance plays a crucial role in determining the occurrence of a decoupling. Our results highlight the value of causal-inference approaches for the analysis of complex physiological processes. With regard to projected increasing temperatures and especially extreme events in future climates, further vegetation types might be pushed to threatening canopy temperatures. Our findings suggest that the coupling of leaf-level photosynthesis and stomatal conductance, common in land surface schemes, may need be re-examined when applied to high-temperature events

Improvements and analyzes of sea ice drift and deformation retrievals from SAR images
Sea ice is a key component of the climate system since it regulates the exchange of heat, the moisture, and the salinity in the polar oceans. The sea ice cover is set into motion and drifts, deforms and fractures under the action of external forces and respective boundary conditions. A positive trend in sea ice mobility, differential kinematics and deformation has been observed in the last decades. This increasing dynamics can increase the ice-albedo feedback loop, one of the most important feedback mechanisms related to climate change. The kinematics of sea ice is observed from space by synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and quantified using drift detection algorithms. The requirements that the applied algorithm has to meet regarding resolution, reliability and computing time vary with the type of application. Sea ice kinematics and associated deformation processes occur across a wide range of spatial scales, from meters to thousands of kilometers. It is important to understand how large-scale behavior monitored by satellite relates to and depends on small scale processes of sea ice. Thus, the major objective of this study was to review and validate recent research results of sea ice drift and deformation characteristics obtained at larger scales by extending the analyzes towards smaller scales and examine emerging difficulties and challenges
Scale dependence of high-resolution sea ice deformation and the link to sea ice classification
The deformation of sea ice is an important component of sea ice dynamics and the interaction between atmosphere, ice, ocean, and land. An inhomogeneous drift of sea ice creates opening or closing of leads, and results in the formation of pressure ridges and local changes of the ice thickness. The motion of sea ice can be observed from space by synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and quantified by drift-detection algorithms. A general problem of quantifying deformation or strain rates is that the magnitudes are dependent on the spatial and temporal scales.
Previous analyses, primarily on RGPS-data, have revealed the strong heterogeneous and intermittent character of sea ice deformation. By analyzing the distribution of strain rates a scaling effect, both temporally and spatially, could be demonstrated (Hutchings et al. 2011; Marsan et al. 2004; Rampal et al. 2008; Stern and Lindsay 2009). Thus, the distribution of strain rates at some (arbitrary) scale is not sufficient to characterize sea ice deformation (Weiss 2013).
The objective of our study is to extent the analysis of strain fields towards smaller spatial scales, which are not included in previous studies. By using sequential SAR images and a pattern-matching approach for the retrieval of the drift field it is possible to downsize the spatial scale from several kilometers to a few 100 meters. To identify the effect of spatial scaling we perform a statistical analysis of strain rates. We calculate the statistical moments of the strain rate distribution for different spatial scales and describe their dependence on spatial resolution using a power law. The results obtained hitherto reveal the scale-dependence of strain rates. The found relations are consistent with similar analyses on larger scale ranges. In addition and for the first time for sea ice we perform the analysis independently for shear strain and divergence. Again, scaling behavior is observed, but differently pronounced.
Our result strengthened the assumption that scaling properties extend down to very fine scales and thus an extrapolation to laboratory scales (~1m) may be feasible. If scaling behavior of strain rates is known, the comparability of sea ice deformation derived from different methods at different spatial scales, e.g. modelling , buoys or SAR-data, is significantly improved. In addition, conclusions about the mechanical properties of the sea ice can be made.
After the statistic analysis is performed we link the manifestation (magnitude or spatial extent of deformation) and nature of the scaling effect (mono- or multifractal) with the existing sea ice classes/conditions. The ice classes/conditions are derived directly from the SAR images and are compared with the prevailing scaling behavior. Thus, scaling effects can be treated separately for certain sea ice classes/conditions and not only as functions of regional and seasonal conditions
Impact of sea ice drift retrieval errors, discretization and grid type on calculations of ice deformation
We studied two issues to be considered in the calculation of parameters characterizing sea ice deformation: the effect of uncertainties in an automatically retrieved sea ice drift field, and the influence of the type of drift vector grid. Sea ice deformation changes the local ice mass balance and the interaction between atmosphere, ice, and ocean, and constitutes a hazard to marine traffic and operations. Due to numerical effects, the results of deformation retrievals may predict, e.g., openings and closings of the ice cover that do not exist in reality. We focus specifically on fields of ice drift obtained from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery and analyze the Propagated Drift Retrieval Error (PDRE) and the Boundary Definition Error (BDE). From the theory of error propagation, the PDRE for the calculated deformation parameters can be estimated. To quantify the BDE, we devise five different grid types and compare theoretical expectation and numerical results for different deformation parameters assuming three scenarios: pure divergence, pure shear, and a mixture of both. Our findings for both sources of error help to set up optimal deformation retrieval schemes and are also useful for other applications working with vector fields and scalar parameters derived therefrom
