Assessment of the benefits of user involvement in health research from the Warwick Diabetes Care Research User Group : a qualitative case study
Objective
To assess the benefits of involving health-care users in diabetes research. Design and participants
For this qualitative case study, semi-structured interviews were conducted with researchers who had worked extensively with the group. During regular meetings of the Research User Group, members discussed their views of the group's effectiveness as part of the meeting's agenda. Interviews and discussions were transcribed, coded using N-Vivo software and analysed using constant comparative methods. Results
Involvement of users in research was generally seen as contributing to effective and meaningful research. However, the group should not be considered to be representative of the patient population or participants of future trials. An important contributor to the group's success was its longstanding nature, enabling users to gain more insight into research and form constructive working relationships with researchers. The user-led nature of the group asserted itself, especially, in the language used during group meetings. A partial shift of power from researchers to users was generally acknowledged. Users' main contribution was their practical expertise in living with diabetes, but their involvement also helped researchers to remain connected to the `real world' in which research would be applied. While the group's work fulfilled established principles of consumer involvement in research, important contributions relying on personal interaction between users and researchers were hard to evaluate by process measures alone. Conclusions
We demonstrated the feasibility, acceptability and effectiveness of this longstanding, experienced, lay-led research advisory group. Its impact on research stems from the continuing interaction between researchers and users, and the general ethos of learning from each other in an on-going process. Both process measures and qualitative interviews with stakeholders are needed to evaluate the contributions of service users to health research
Is the energy density of the ground state of the sine-Gordon model unbounded from below for beta^2 > 8 pi ?
We discuss Coleman's theorem concerning the energy density of the ground
state of the sine-Gordon model proved in Phys. Rev. D 11, 2088 (1975).
According to this theorem the energy density of the ground state of the
sine-Gordon model should be unbounded from below for coupling constants beta^2
> 8 pi. The consequence of this theorem would be the non-existence of the
quantum ground state of the sine-Gordon model for beta^2 > 8 pi. We show that
the energy density of the ground state in the sine-Gordon model is bounded from
below even for beta^2 > 8 pi. This result is discussed in relation to Coleman's
theorem (Comm. Math. Phys. 31, 259 (1973)), particle mass spectra and

A variant in LIN28B is associated with 2D:4D finger-length ratio, a putative retrospective biomarker of prenatal testosterone exposure
The ratio of the lengths of an individual's second to fourth digit (2D:4D) is commonly used as a noninvasive retrospective biomarker for prenatal androgen exposure. In order to identify the genetic determinants of 2D:4D, we applied a genome-wide association approach to 1507 11-year-old children from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) in whom 2D:4D ratio had been measured, as well as a sample of 1382 12- to 16-year-olds from the Brisbane Adolescent Twin Study. A meta-analysis of the two scans identified a single variant in the LIN28B gene that was strongly associated with 2D:4D (rs314277: p = 4.1 108) and was subsequently independently replicated in an additional 3659 children from the ALSPAC cohort (p = 1.53 106). The minor allele of the rs314277 variant has previously been linked to increased height and delayed age at menarche, but in our study it was associated with increased 2D:4D in the direction opposite to that of previous reports on the correlation between 2D:4D and age at menarche. Our findings call into question the validity of 2D:4D as a simplistic retrospective biomarker for prenatal testosterone exposure
A multidimensional view? Evaluating the different and combined contributions of diaries and interviews in an exploration of asexual identities and intimacies
This article evaluates the relative contributions of diaries and interviews in multiple methods qualitative research exploring asexual identities and intimacies. Differentiated by three core differences: reflective time-frame (the day just had/lifetime), context (alone/with researcher) and mode (written/verbal), these methods had the potential to generate a multidimensional view of our topics. Using five cases in which data from both interviews and diaries were collected, this article explores how the intermeshed issues of identity and intimacy were constructed in each method, as well as reflecting on what was gained by their combination. Our analysis leads us to conclude that multiple methods do not always produce a fuller or a more rounded picture of individual participants’ lives. Nevertheless, the decision to collect data using different strategies did increase our chances of finding a method that suited individual participants, whether in style or focus
Barriers and supports to implementation of MDI/spacer use in nine Canadian pediatric emergency departments: a qualitative study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Despite recent research supporting the use of metered dose inhalers with spacer devices (MDI/spacers) in pediatric emergency departments (PEDs) for acute exacerbations of asthma, uptake of this practice has been slow. The objectives of this study were to determine the barriers and supports to implementing MDI/spacer research and to identify factors associated with early and late adoption of MDI/spacers in Canadian PEDs.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Using a comparative case study design, we classified nine tertiary care pediatric hospital PEDs based on their stage of implementation. Data were collected using focus group interviews with physicians, registered nurses (RNs), and respiratory therapists (RTs), and individual interviews with both patient care and medical directors at each site. Initial coding was based on the Ottawa Model of Research Use (OMRU) categories of elements known to influence the uptake of innovations.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>One hundred and fifty healthcare professionals from nine different healthcare institutions participated in this study. Lack of leadership in the form of a research champion, a lack of consensus about the benefits of MDI/spacers among staff, perceived resistance from patients/parents, and perceived increased cost and workload associated with MDI/spacer use were the most prevalent barriers to the adoption of the MDI/spacer. Common strategies used by early-adopting sites included the active participation of all professional groups in the adoption process in addition to a well-planned and executed educational component for staff, patients, and families. Early adopter sites were also more likely to have the MDI/spacer included in a clinical protocol/pathway.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Potential barriers and supports to implementation have been identified that will help EDs adopt MDI/spacer use. Future interventions intended to increase MDI/spacer use in PEDs will need to be sensitive to the barriers identified in this study.</p
Approaches to working with children and families: a review of the evidence for practice
This paper explores a range of approaches to working with children and families within Children's Services and Children's Social Care, in a UK local authority context. There are a variety of established approaches, supported by different concepts and theories. Given the substantial recent and developing changes in the political, social and economic context for supporting families in need, collating academic and practical evidence to inform both theory and decision making is vital. The article has a practice focus for Children's Services, but it is also relevant and has implications for a much wider readership. Evidence was gathered through a purposive and rapid review, and aggregated with practice evidence from various sources. An array of issues is considered relating to the context, theory, application, implementation and evaluation of taking one or several approaches. Overall, there is a very limited evidentiary basis, either from research or local authority practice, for adopting any one, wholesale approach to working with children and families in a local authority context over another, but there is emerging evidence of the benefits that certain models and approaches could have, and anecdotally the decision to adopt one formal model appears to be increasing

Performative Work: Bridging Performativity and Institutional Theory in the Responsible Investment Field
Callon’s performativity thesis has illuminated how economic theories and calculative devices shape markets, but has been challenged for its neglect of the organizational, institutional and political context. Our seven-year qualitative study of a large financial data company found that the company’s initial attempt to change the responsible investment field through a performative approach failed because of the constraints posed by field practices and organizational norms on the design of the calculative device. However, the company was subsequently able to put in place another form of performativity by attending to the normative and regulative associations of the device. We theorize this route to performativity by proposing the concept of performative work, which designates the necessary institutional work to enable translation and the subsequent adoption of the device. We conclude by considering the implications of performative work for the performativity and the institutional work literatures
Doing implementation research on health governance: a frontline researcher’s reflexive account of field-level challenges and their management
BACKGROUND: Implementation Research (IR) in and around health systems comes with unique challenges for
researchers including implementation, multi-layer governance, and ethical issues. Partnerships between
researchers, implementers, policy makers and community members are central to IR and come with
additional challenges. In this paper, we elaborate on the challenges faced by frontline field researchers,
drawing from experience with an IR study on Village Health Sanitation and Nutrition Committees (VHSNCs).
METHODS: The IR on VHSNC took place in one state/province in India over an 18-month research period.
The IR study had twin components; intervention and in-depth research. The intervention sought to
strengthen the VHSNC functioning, and concurrently the research arm sought to understand the contextual
factors, pathways and mechanism affecting VHSNC functions. Frontline researchers were employed for data
collection and a research assistant was living in the study sites. The frontline research assistant experienced
a range of challenges, while collecting data from the study sites, which were documented as field memos
and analysed using inductive content analysis approach.
RESULTS: Due to the relational nature of IR, the challenges coalesced around two sets of relationships (a)
between the community and frontline researchers and (b) between implementers and frontline researchers.
In the community, the frontline researcher was viewed as the supervisor of the intervention and was
perceived by the community to have power to bring about beneficial changes with public services and
facilities. Implementers expected help from the frontline researcher in problem-solving in VHSNCs, and
feedback on community mobilization to improve their approaches. A concerted effort was undertaken by
the whole research team to clarify and dispel concerns among the community and implementers through
careful and constant communication. The strategies employed were both managerial, relational and
reflexive in nature.
CONCLUSION: Frontline researchers through their experiences shape the research process and its outcome
and they play a central role in the research. It demonstrates that frontline researcher resilience is very
crucial when conducting health policy and systems research.Scopu

Combining Logics to Transform Organizational Agency: Blending Industry and Art at Alessi
To understand how organizations combine conflicting institutional logics strategically to create and pursue new market opportunities, we conducted an in-depth longitudinal study of the multiple efforts of the Italian manufacturer of household goods Alessi to combine the logics of industrial manufacturing and cultural production. Over three decades, Alessi developed three different strategies to combine normative elements of the two logics, using each strategy to envision and pursue different market opportunities. By combining the logics of industrial manufacturing and cultural production, Alessi was able to envision new possibilities for value creation and to enact them through innovation in product design. The three strategies triggered a common set of mechanisms through which the purposeful combining of logics enabled the pursuit of opportunity, while each strategy structured the process differently. We develop a theoretical model linking the development of recombinant strategies to the dynamic restructuring of organizational agency and the related capacity to create and pursue new market opportunities. Our findings and theoretical insights advance understanding of the processes through which organizations challenge taken-for-granted beliefs and practices to create new market opportunities, use logics as resources to enable embedded agency, and design hybrid organizational arrangements
