    Modeling Short-Term Landscape Modification and Sedimentary Budget Induced by Dam Removal: Insights from LEM Application

    Simulation scenarios of sediment flux variation and topographic changes due to dam removal have been investigated in a reservoir catchment of the axial zone of southern Italy through the application of a landscape evolution model (i.e.,: the Caesar–Lisflood landscape evolution models, LEM). LEM simulation highlights that the abrupt change in base level due to dam removal induces a significant increase in erosion ability of main channels and a strong incision of the reservoir infill. Analysis of the sediment dynamics resulting from the dam removal highlights a significant increase of the total eroded volumes in the post dam scenario of a factor higher than 4. Model results also predict a strong modification of the longitudinal profile of main channels, which promoted fluvial incision upstream and downstream of the former reservoir area. Such a geomorphic response is in Agreement with previous analysis of the fluvial system short-term response induced by base-level lowering, thus demonstrating the reliability of LEM-based analysis for solving open problems in applied geomorphology such as perturbations and short-term landscape modification natural processes or human impact

    Alterations in the Microbiota of Caged Honeybees in the Presence of Nosema ceranae Infection and Related Changes in Functionality

    Several studies have outlined that changes in the honeybee gut microbial composition may impair important metabolic functions supporting the honeybees’ life. Gut dysbiosis may be caused by diseases like Nosema ceranae or by other anthropic, environmental or experimental stressors. The present work contributes to increasing knowledge on the dynamics of the gut microbiome acquisition in caged honeybees, an experimental condition frequently adopted by researchers, with or without infection with N. ceranae, and fed with a bacterial mixture to control N. ceranae development. Changes of the gut microbiota were elucidated comparing microbial profile of caged and open-field reared honeybees. The absolute abundance of the major gut microbial taxa was studied with both NGS and qPCR approaches, whereas changes in the functionality were based on RAST annotations and manually curated. In general, all caged honeybees showed important changes in the gut microbiota, with γ-proteobacteria (Frischella, Gilliamella and Snodgrassella) lacking in all caged experimental groups. Caged honeybees infected with N. ceranae showed also a strong colonization of environmental taxa like Citrobacter, Cosenzaea and Morganella, as well as possibly pathogenic bacteria such as Serratia. The colonization of Serratia did not occur in presence of the bacterial mixture. The functionality prediction revealed that environmental bacteria or the supplemented bacterial mixture increased the metabolic potential of the honeybee gut microbiome compared to field and caged controls

    As long-term spaceflight missions become ever more imminent, astronaut nutrition and diet require further investigation and development. Dehydrated or stabilized food sources are currently used for spaceflight, but growing fresh produce aboard spacecraft can potentially supplement the astronauts diets. Further, having astronauts work with plants while in space can provide psychological benefits by serving as a tangible passage of time and representing a living component aboard an otherwise mechanical environment. As spaceflight duration will lengthen as missions head back to the Moon and to Mars, having the ability and knowledge to grow fresh produce will become even more vital. The following experiments were conducted in the late summer and fall of 2018. The purpose of these studies were to examine potential off-gas from a system component that could potentially inhibit plant germination, optimizing lighting methods and protocol for mizuna production, determining a fertilizer method that best promotes healthy mizuna yields, and troubleshooting tomato production for the next generation of the Vegetable Production System

    Plant growth research for food production at Kennedy Space Center looks at how future residents of Mars and the Moon will enjoy the sight, smell, taste, and nutrition of plants. Overall, the goal is to provide a sustainable source of healthy food, on long-duration space flights, so astronauts can get the nutrition they need and produce food. The sustainable production of food will aid in the efforts of closed life support. Plants have a vital application for bio regenerative life support as demands for food and oxygen can be provided through photosynthesis, while the carbon dioxide from human respiration is removed. Transpiration is also used in life support processes as waste water that can be recycled through plant systems with the resultant humidity then condensed as clean water. Selected crops will provide the nutrient requirements needed for long duration space flight. Currently, projects in food production are investigating how plants grow in Martian regolith simulant, new crops testing with tomato and pepper cultivars, acquiring real-time photosynthetic data on crops, assessing plant growth in porous concrete media, and the use of plasma for surface decontamination of seeds

    Honeybees exposure to natural feed additives: How is the gut microbiota affected?

    The role of a balanced gut microbiota to maintain health and prevent diseases is largely established in humans and livestock. Conversely, in honeybees, studies on gut microbiota perturbations by external factors have started only recently. Natural methods alternative to chemical products to preserve honeybee health have been proposed, but their effect on the gut microbiota has not been examined in detail. This study aims to investigate the effect of the administration of a bacterial mixture of bifidobacteria and Lactobacillaceae and a commercial product HiveAliveâ„¢ on honeybee gut microbiota. The study was developed in 18 hives of about 2500 bees, with six replicates for each experimental condition for a total of three experimental groups. The absolute abundance of main microbial taxa was studied using qPCR and NGS. The results showed that the majority of the administered strains were detected in the gut. On the whole, great perturbations upon the administration of the bacterial mixture and the plant-based commercial product were not observed in the gut microbiota. Significant variations with respect to the untreated control were only observed for Snodgrassella sp. for the bacterial mixture, Bartonella sp. in HiveAliveâ„¢ and Bombilactobacillus sp. for both. Therefore, the studied approaches are respectful of the honeybee microbiota composition, conceivably without compromising the bee nutritional, social and ecological functions

    Application of an Exhausted Fermentation Broth Obtained from Biohydrogen Production in an Apple Orchard: Assessment of Fruit Quality

    About 95% of global hydrogen production is made by fossil fuels using different technologies which are all characterized by high energy consumption and high carbon emissions. Alternatively, more sustainable production methods, such as biological fermentation processes, are under study. Dark fermentation, also called acidogenesis, entails the transformation of a great variety of organic substances into a mixture of organic and inorganic products, as well as gases (H-2 and CO2). In this study we tested an exhausted fermentation broth, derived after Clostridium fermentation for H-2 production, as a biostimulant via foliar application in an intensive apple orchard. Two different doses were applied upon dilution of the broth in water (100 mL L-1 and 10 mL L-1), evaluating the main fruit quality parameters (fresh weight, fruit diameter, dry matter, firmness, soluble solid content, color lightness, DA index) in addition to macro- and micro-nutrients and heavy metals concentrations. Chemical characterization of the broth showed a high amount of low-MW polypeptides (Trp-Glu-Lys, Ile-Pro-Ile, Phe-Pro-Lys, His-Pro) and organic acids (formic acid, butyric acid, butanedioic acid); moreover, quantitative analyses of inorganic ions showed no heavy metal detection but high concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, compatible with use in agriculture. The fruit quality parameters showed significantly higher mean fruit weight compared to the untreated trees, as well as higher dry matter. No statistical differences were recorded among the treatments for fruit firmness, diameter and yield. Soluble solids content in both treatments were significantly lower than the controls, whereas the DA index mean values were higher in both treatments compared to the controls, indicating a delay in fruit ripening probably due to the high nitrogen broth concentration. Regarding the chemical analyses of fruits, no particular differences were found among the treatments, except for Fe, which showed a significantly higher amount upon treatment with the lower dose. As concerns leaves, no phytotoxic symptoms were detected in both treatments, making the described exhausted broth a candidate for its use as a plant biostimulant. Additional studies are needed to evaluate the ideal application dose, identify further action targets and implement appropriate strategies to concentrate the biostimulant active compounds
