    Generation Y Students Perception of Packaging and Pricing of Arkansas Wines

    The objective of this research focuses on “Generation Y students perceptions of packaging and pricing of Arkansas winesâ€. A thirteen-question quantitative survey was given to 200 Generation Y students at a mid-south land-grant university student union. The questions focused on consumers’ preferences on labeling, packaging, and pricing of Arkansas wines. This research is important to the state’s wineries success with implication on product satisfaction, perceived quality, and price value. Generation Y prefers the glass bottle with the traditional cork and description of the wine. Majority of Generation Y would spend 10to10 to 15 on a 750 ml of Arkansas wine

    The PI3K pathway regulates endochondral bone growth through control of hypertrophic chondrocyte differentiation

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The majority of our bones develop through the process of endochondral ossification that involves chondrocyte proliferation and hypertrophic differentiation in the cartilage growth plate. A large number of growth factors and hormones have been implicated in the regulation of growth plate biology, however, less is known about the intracellular signaling pathways involved. PI3K/Akt has been identified as a major regulator of cellular proliferation, differentiation and death in multiple cell types.</p> <p>Results and Discussion</p> <p>Employing an organ culture system of embryonic mouse tibiae and LY294002, a pharmacological inhibitor of PI3K, we show that inhibition of the pathway results in significant growth reduction, demonstrating that PI3K is required for normal endochondral bone growth <it>in vitro</it>. PI3K inhibition reduces the length of the proliferating and particularly of the hypertrophic zone. Studies with organ cultures and primary chondrocytes in micromass culture show delayed hypertrophic differentiation of chondrocytes and increased apoptosis in the presence of LY294002. Surprisingly, PI3K inhibition had no strong effect on IGF1-induced bone growth, but partially blocked the anabolic effects of C-type natriuretic peptide.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our data demonstrate an essential role of PI3K signaling in chondrocyte differentiation and as a consequence of this, in the endochondral bone growth process.</p

    Local anesthetics are widely used in practice to control patients’ pain; however, local anesthetic systemic toxicity (LAST) is a potentially fatal risk factor that may occur after local anesthetic administration. Evidence-based education for providers could prevent the deaths of patients by increasing knowledge of pathophysiology, identifying varying signs and symptoms of local anesthetic toxicity, and implementing timely treatment. This doctoral project created an evidence-based teaching plan to educate perioperative providers on how to identify and more effectively respond to LAST

    Automated detection and tracking of marine mammals in the vicinity of tidal turbines using multibeam sonar

Software development and data analysis was funded by the Scottish Government as part of the Marine Mammal Scientific Support Program (Grant No. MMSS/002/15). Umbilical cables to the turbine infrastructure were funded and developed by SIMEC Atlantis.Understanding how marine animals behave around tidal turbines is essential if we are to quantify how individuals and populations may be affected by the installation of these devices in the coming decades. Our particular interest is in collision risk, and how this may be affected by the fine-scale behaviour of seals and small cetacean species around devices. We report on a study in which multibeam sonar data were collected close to an operational tidal turbine in Scotland continuously over a twelve-month period. The sonars provide high-resolution (a few cm) data over a 120° angle out to a range of 55 m at a rate of 10 frames per second. We describe a system which uses automatic computer algorithms to detect potential targets of interest, verified by human analysts using a sophisticated computer user interface to confirm detections and assign target species. To date, we have identified 359 tracks of marine mammals in the data, as well as several thousand tracks from fish and diving birds. These are currently being parameterised to study how these species react to the moving turbine rotors, and the data are now being used to explore the development of improved automated detection and classification algorithms.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Effect of the University on the Social Entrepreneurial Intention of Students

    Purpose – The study aims to test the applicability of a variant of the model proposed by Hockerts (2017) for assessing the social entrepreneurial intention (SEI) of male and female students. It extends the model by incorporating the university’s environment and support system (ESS) as an additional more distal construct. The university’s ESS, coupled with the experience with social, cultural and environmental issues can affect SEI by influencing the more proximal precursors of empathy towards others, perceived self-efficacy, perceived community support and social, cultural and environmental responsibility. Design/methodology/approach – A structured non-disguised questionnaire was administered to students at a Canadian university. A sample of 485 usable responses was analysed by means of second-order structural equation modelling. Findings – The results provide confirmation that the proposed model is a multi-group invariant and appropriate for analysing the SEI of male and female students. They also show that the university’s ESS helps predict SEI indirectly through the complete mediation of the more proximal antecedents. Research limitations/implications – The questionnaire is limited to universities with social innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives. Practical implications – Outcomes of the study can help universities assess the efficacy of their social innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives for instilling a social entrepreneurial mind-set in students. Consequently, universities will be better equipped to raise the perceptions of venture feasibility and desirability, thus increasing students’ perceptions of opportunity. Originality/value – The study advances the social entrepreneurial knowledge of the university’s effect on the precursors of SEI

    CLEAR-AI: empowering people living with dementia and their carers to understand and reduce distress

    People living with dementia sometimes present with behaviours that carers find difficult to understand and manage. These include aggression, pacing, vocalising, exit-seeking and sexually inappropriate behaviour. They can be present in up to 70% of people living with dementia and often present because of misunderstanding or because of the distress the person experiences trying to cope with the daily challenges of living with their illness. These behaviours increase the risk that a person will move from their home to a care home. CLEAR Dementia Care© helps carers to understand behaviour in the context of the person and their environment, identify unmet needs and respond in ways to reduce distress. We present the pilot of “CLEAR-AI”, an artificial intelligence (AI) powered platform that interprets data from a range of connected smart sensors, apps and devices to model the person with dementia’s daily routines. Analysis of the data and training the AI model enables the platform to identify the triggers that precede distress episodes and to recognise when episodes occur in the context of previous activities in the day. Using these models, and with CLEAR’s assessment as baseline, we can initiate interventions into daily schedules that reduce or mitigate distress where it is likely to arise. The goal is to reduce carer burden and enable the person to live at home with as much independence as possible for as long as possible. Our consortium brings together people living with dementia and their carers, commissioners of digital social care, specialists in dementia care, AI and digital solutions.     Non-native vascular flora of the Arctic : Taxonomic richness, distribution and pathways

    We present a comprehensive list of non-native vascular plants known from the Arctic, explore their geographic distribution, analyze the extent of naturalization and invasion among 23 subregions of the Arctic, and examine pathways of introductions. The presence of 341 non-native taxa in the Arctic was confirmed, of which 188 are naturalized in at least one of the 23 regions. A small number of taxa (11) are considered invasive; these plants are known from just three regions. In several Arctic regions there are no naturalized non-native taxa recorded and the majority of Arctic regions have a low number of naturalized taxa. Analyses of the non-native vascular plant flora identified two main biogeographic clusters within the Arctic: American and Asiatic. Among all pathways, seed contamination and transport by vehicles have contributed the most to non-native plant introduction in the Arctic.Peer reviewe

    Amino acid-dependent cMyc expression is essential for NK cell metabolic and functional responses in mice

    Natural killer (NK) cells are lymphocytes with important anti-tumour functions. Cytokine activation of NK cell glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) are essential for robust NK cell responses. However, the mechanisms leading to this metabolic phenotype are unclear. Here we show that the transcription factor cMyc is essential for IL-2/IL-12-induced metabolic and functional responses in mice. cMyc protein levels are acutely regulated by amino acids; cMyc protein is lost rapidly when glutamine is withdrawn or when system L-amino acid transport is blocked. We identify SLC7A5 as the predominant system L-amino acid transporter in activated NK cells. Unlike other lymphocyte subsets, glutaminolysis and the tricarboxylic acid cycle do not sustain OXPHOS in activated NK cells. Glutamine withdrawal, but not the inhibition of glutaminolysis, results in the loss of cMyc protein, reduced cell growth and impaired NK cell responses. These data identify an essential role for amino acid-controlled cMyc for NK cell metabolism and function

    Presence of optrA-mediated linezolid resistance in multiple lineages and plasmids of Enterococcus faecalis revealed by long read sequencing

We aimed to characterize the genetic environment of optrA in linezolid-resistant Enterococcus faecalis isolates from Scotland. Six linezolid-resistant E. faecalis isolated from urogenital samples were confirmed to carry the optrA gene by PCR. Short read (Illumina) sequencing showed the isolates were genetically distinct (>13900 core SNPs) and belonged to different MLST sequence types. Plasmid contents were examined using hybrid assembly of short and long read (Oxford Nanopore MinION) sequencing technologies. The optrA gene was located on distinct plasmids in each isolate, suggesting that transfer of a single plasmid did not contribute to optrA dissemination in this collection. pTM6294-2, BX5936-1 and pWE0438-1 were similar to optrA-positive plasmids from China and Japan, while the remaining three plasmids had limited similarity to other published examples. We identified the novel Tn6993 transposon in pWE0254-1 carrying linezolid (optrA), macrolide (ermB) and spectinomycin [ANT(9)-Ia] resistance genes. OptrA amino acid sequences differed by 0–20 residues. We report multiple variants of optrA on distinct plasmids in diverse strains of E. faecalis . It is important to identify the selection pressures driving the emergence and maintenance of resistance against linezolid to retain the clinical utility of this antibiotic.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Effects of gender-transformative relationships and sexuality education to reduce adolescent pregnancy (The JACK trial): a cluster randomised trial

    BACKGROUND: The need to engage boys in gender-transformative relationships and sexuality education (RSE) to reduce adolescent pregnancy is endorsed by WHO. We aimed to test an intervention which used a gender-transformative approach to engage adolescents in RSE to prevent unprotected sex. METHODS: This cluster-randomised trial with process and economic evaluations tested a school-based intervention entitled If I Were Jack versus standard RSE (control) for students (aged 14-15 years) in UK schools. Schools were randomly allocated (1:1) and masked to allocation at baseline. The primary outcome was self-reported avoidance of unprotected sex (sexual abstinence or use of reliable contraception at last sex) after 12-14-months. We analysed the data using intention-to-treat mixed effects regression models. FINDINGS: Of 803 schools assessed for eligibility, 263 schools were invited by letter, of which 66 schools agreed to be randomly assigned, of which 62 schools completed follow-up. The trial was done between Feb 1, 2018, and March 6, 2020. 8216 students participated at baseline in 2018; 6561 (79·85%) provided 12-14 months follow-up. There was no significant difference in the primary outcome of avoidance of unprotected sex: 2648 (86·62) of 3057 in the intervention group avoided unprotected sex versus 2768 (86·41%) of 3203 in the control group (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 0·85 [95% CI 0·58-1·26], p=0·42). Exploratory post-hoc analysis of the two components of the primary outcome showed that significantly more intervention students used reliable contraception at last sex compared with control students and there was no significant difference between the groups for sexual abstinence. No adverse events were reported. INTERPRETATION: The intervention had a null effect on the primary outcome of preventing unprotected sex (increasing sexual abstinence or use of reliable contraception) in the whole student population. However, the results showed significant increases in use of reliable contraceptives for sexually active students. Engaging all young people early through RSE is important so that as they become sexually active, rates of unprotected sex are reduced. FUNDING: National Institute for Health Research
