    Lower bounds for polynomials using geometric programming

    We make use of a result of Hurwitz and Reznick, and a consequence of this result due to Fidalgo and Kovacec, to determine a new sufficient condition for a polynomial fR[X1,...,Xn]f\in\mathbb{R}[X_1,...,X_n] of even degree to be a sum of squares. This result generalizes a result of Lasserre and a result of Fidalgo and Kovacec, and it also generalizes the improvements of these results given in [6]. We apply this result to obtain a new lower bound fgpf_{gp} for ff, and we explain how fgpf_{gp} can be computed using geometric programming. The lower bound fgpf_{gp} is generally not as good as the lower bound fsosf_{sos} introduced by Lasserre and Parrilo and Sturmfels, which is computed using semidefinite programming, but a run time comparison shows that, in practice, the computation of fgpf_{gp} is much faster. The computation is simplest when the highest degree term of ff has the form i=1naiXi2d\sum_{i=1}^n a_iX_i^{2d}, ai>0a_i>0, i=1,...,ni=1,...,n. The lower bounds for ff established in [6] are obtained by evaluating the objective function of the geometric program at the appropriate feasible points

    Complications leading to hospitalization due to consumption of anti-TB drugs in patients with tuberculosis in Gorgan, Iran (2007-12)

    Background and Objective: Anti tuberculosis drugs therapy is the most effective method for controling the tuberculosis (TB). Early detection and appropriate treatment can prevent the TB-drug resistance. This study was carried out to determine the complications leading to hospitalization due to consumption of anti-TB drugs in patients with tuberculosis. Methods: In this descriptive-analytic study, 1550 records of patients with TB in urban and rural health centers of Gorgan, north of Iran were assessed during 2007-12. Checklist consists of demographic and clinical data for each patient was recorded in a questionare. Results: 44 cases experienced the complications of anti-TB drugs. 27 (61.4%) of cases with complications were women. 77.3% and 22.7% of patients affected with pulmonary and extra pulmonary tuberculosis,respectively. 38.6% of patients were diabetic. The hepatic complication was seen in 37 cases (84.1%). Skin and other complications were seen in 5 and 2 cases, respectively. There was not any relationship between drug complications and other disases. Conclusion: Hepatic damage is the most common complication leading to hospitalization in tuberculosis patients using anti-TB drugs. Keywords: Tuberculosis, Anti-TB drug, Live

    The effects of orientation of an inclined enclosure on laminar natural convection

    Natural convective laminar flow is numerically investigated in a two-dimensional and square enclosure at various angles of inclination respect to horizontal. Two adjacent walls of the enclosure are insulated and the other two are kept at different temperatures. The influence of Rayleigh number representing the effects due to the differential heating of the enclosure walls as well as the effect of inclination angle on natural convection flow are studied. The flow field and isothermal lines show different patterns at high Rayleigh numbers. The average Nusselt number, maximum stream function and average temperature appear to be a little affected by the inclination angle at low Rayleigh numbers. However, as the Rayleigh numbers rises, these parameters behave differently at various inclination angles. In this study, the effects of inclination on the temperature along the centerline of the enclosure and the local Nusselt number along the cold wall are also examined. The results show negligible effects of inclination angle at low Rayleigh numbers and considerable effects at high Rayleigh numbers

    Contour lines of the discrete scale invariant rough surfaces

    We study the fractal properties of the 2d discrete scale invariant (DSI) rough surfaces. The contour lines of these rough surfaces show clear DSI. In the appropriate limit the DSI surfaces converge to the scale invariant rough surfaces. The fractal properties of the 2d DSI rough surfaces apart from possessing the discrete scale invariance property follow the properties of the contour lines of the corresponding scale invariant rough surfaces. We check this hypothesis by calculating numerous fractal exponents of the contour lines by using numerical calculations.     Computational analysis of magnetohydrodynamic natural convection in a square cavity with a thin fin

    A numerical study of laminar natural convection in a square cavity with a thin fin that is under the influence of a uniform magnetic field is presented. The side walls of the cavity are kept at different temperatures and the horizontal walls are thermally insulated. An Adaptive Network-based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) approach and an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) approach are developed, trained and validated using the results of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis. The effects of pertinent parameters on fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics are studied. Among these parameters are the Rayleigh number (103≤≤;106), the Hartmann number (0≤&Ha;≤;100), the position of the thin fin (0.1≤ Y p≤) and the length of the thin fin (0≤Lp≤0.8). The results show that ANFIS and ANN can successfully predict the fluid flow and heat transfer behaviour within the cavity in less time without compromising accuracy. In most cases, ANFIS can predict the results more accurately than ANN

    Overexpression of molecular chaperons GRP78 and GRP94 in CD44hi/CD24lo breast cancer stem cells

    Introduction: Breast cancer stem cell with CD44hi/CD24lo phonotype is described having stem cell properties and represented as the main driving factor in breast cancer initiation, growth, metastasis and low response to anti-cancer agents. Glucoseregulated proteins (GRPs) are heat shock protein family chaperons that are charged with regulation of protein machinery and modulation of endoplasmic reticulum homeostasis whose important roles in stem cell development and invasion of various cancers have been demonstrated. Here, we investigated the expression levels of GRP78 and GRP94 in CD44hi/CD24lo phenotype breast cancer stem cells (BCSCs). Methods: MCF7, T-47D and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell lines were used. CD44hi/CD24lo phenotype cell population were analyzed and sorted by fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS). Transcriptional and translational expression of GRP78 and GRP94 were investigated by western blotting and quantitative real time PCR. Results: Results showed different proportion of CD44hi/CD24lo phenotype cell population in their original bulk cells. The ranking of the cell lines in terms of CD44hi/CD24lo phenotype cell population was as MCF7<T-47D<MDA-MB-231. Our results also indicated that CD44hi/CD24lo phenotype cells exhibited higher mRNA and protein expression level of GRP78 and GRP94 compared to their original bulk cells. Conclusion: Our results show a relationship between overexpression of GRP78 and GRP94 and exhibiting CD44hi/CD24lo phenotype in breast cancer cells. We conclude that upregulation of GRPs may be an important factor in the emergence of CD44hi/CD24lo phenotype BCSCs features. � 2016 The Author(s)

    The effect of rocker shoe on the ground reaction force parameters in patients with rheumatoid arthritis

    Objectives: Foot and ankle problems are common complications in rheumatoid arthritis disease. Gait pattern such as normal foot and ankle rocker is impaired in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Rocker sole as an external shoe modification is commonly prescribed in this pathology. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of rocker shoe on vertical ground reaction force parameters during walking in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Methods: Sixteen female participants with rheumatoid arthritis were recruited in this study. All patients were prepared with a pair of high-top, heel-to-toe rocker shoe and were asked to wear the shoes for one month. Ground reaction force parameters including peak forces and peak force times were evaluated in the first session, and after seven days and thirty days follow up were carried on. Results: First maximal vertical force was significantly increased with rocker shoe compared to barefoot after 7 days follow up. Walking with rocker shoe reduced the minimal vertical force after 7 days. The second maximal vertical force showed to be statistically lower with rocker shoe than barefoot after 7 and 30 days. Furthermore, stance time decreased with rocker shoe after one month. Discussion: Results of this study revealed that vertical ground reaction force parameters changed in rheumatoid arthritis patients with heel-to-toe rocker shoe, both immediately and after one month follow up. This might suggest the effectiveness of rocker shoes in improving gait in rheumatoid arthritis patients
