Supplier-induced demand for physiotherapy in the Netherlands

    Get PDF
Empirical studies of supplier-induced demand in health care have mostly concentrated on the analysis of physician behaviour. In this article, the focus is on the economic determinants of physiotherapist behaviour in The Netherlands. It is shown that relative prices work as strong incentives to alter the mix of services supplied, conform to the model of revenue maximization under a production constraint. However, the time-series analysis also gives some indication that this ability to influence the demand for their services to increase hourly income is not fully exploited. The latter finding is inconsistent with pure income maximization but rather points to a trade-off between loss of revenue and demand manipulation. The fact that the choice of therapy varies with the pressure on provider incomes does cast some doubt on the appropriateness of the chosen patterns of treatment in terms of effectiveness

Imagining sustainability: The added value of transition scenarios in transition management

    Get PDF
Abstract Purpose – To address lessons that specify the impact and contribution of current scenario methods when focused on facilitating transition management processes. Design/methodology/approach – Comparative literature review based on transition management and scenario development. Research limitations/implications – Need of further systemic thought about the required criteria of transition scenarios and the embedding of scenario use in transition management processes. Practical implications – Processes of transition management are in need of transition specific scenarios. Originality/value – Because transition management implies a complex and long-term steering paradigm with which current scenario applications are not familiar, conclusions are drawn on the (changing) requirements of scenario development processes in transition management and on the need to innovate current scenario methods in the context of transition management

Signatures for short-range correlations in {16}O, observed in the reaction {16}O(e,e'pp){14}C.

The reaction O-16(e,e'pp)C-14 has been studied at a transferred four-momentum (omega,\q\) = (210 MeV, 300 MeV/c). The differential cross sections for the transitions to the ground state and the lowest excited states in C-14 were determined as a function of the momentum of the recoiling C-14 nucleus and the angle between the momentum of the proton emitted in the forward direction and the momentum transfer q. A comparison of the data to the results of calculations, performed with a microscopic model, shows clear signatures for short-range correlations in the O-16 ground state

Restoration of fens and peat lakes: a biogeochemical approach

Contains fulltext : 76534.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access)Worldwide, fens and peat lakes are being threatened by multiple environmental problems, such as desiccation, eutrophication, pollution and global warming. This has led to increased peat decomposition and sludge production, disappearance of macrophyte species, biodiversity losses and hampered terrestrialization. This thesis emphasizes the essential role of biogeochemical knowledge in the ecological restoration of fens and peat lakes: the regulation of mobilization, reduction, sulphide toxicity and peat decomposition all have important implications for water and sediment quality, and for vegetation development. As indicators of both biogeochemical processes and potential biodiversity, sediment and sediment pore water ratios provide valuable diagnostic and prognostic tools for the restoration of fens and peat lakes. These ratios are not only useful for risk assessment, but also for selecting the most promising measures. In many cases, however, it turns out to be difficult to tackle the high P concentrations present by P immobilization methods or dredging. Besides decreasing the influx of nutrient-rich water, it is therefore important to prevent the influx of alkaline and S-rich water, because this hydrological measure will slow down decomposition processes and internal mobilization of nutrients. It can be concluded that if the right measures are chosen on the basis of simple measurements, it is certainly possible to restore the biodiversity in declined fens and peat lakes.RU Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen, 21 mei 2010169 p
