An Argument Against the Possibility of Gettiered Beliefs

In this paper, I propose a new argument against Gettier’s counterexamples to the thesis that knowledge is justified true belief. I claim that if there is no doxastic voluntarism, and if it is admitted that one has formed the belief that p at t1 if, at t0, one would be surprised to learn or discover that not–p, it can be plausibly argued that Gettiered beliefs simply cannot be formed

Symmetry-breaking phase transition in a dynamical decision model

We consider a simple decision model in which a set of agents randomly choose one of two competing shops selling the same perishable products (typically food). The satisfaction of agents with respect to a given store is related to the freshness of the previously bought products. Agents select with a higher probability the store they are most satisfied with. Studying the model from a statistical physics perspective, both through numerical simulations and mean-field analytical methods, we find a rich behaviour with continuous and discontinuous phase transitions between a symmetric phase where both stores maintain the same level of activity, and a phase with broken symmetry where one of the two shops attracts more customers than the other.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, submitted to JSTA

International audienceDans La bestia de las diagonales, de l’écrivain argentin Néstor Ponce, les personnages évoluent dans un décor qui devient très vite le maître du jeu : le cadre – la ville de La Plata – et l’époque – le dix-neuvième siècle –, loin de ne constituer qu’une simple toile de fond, participent activement à l’élaboration de l’énigme. Les meurtres auxquels est confronté le héros sont pour lui des signes révélant que, dans cette Argentine du dix-neuvième siècle, quelque chose ne fonctionne pas. Cette imbrication de l’intrigue policière et de l’Histoire argentine est mise en place par un ingénieux jeu d’écriture, dont le but est de manipuler le lecteur. De Luna caliente a Cuestiones interioresOrigen, sentido y sinsentido de la violencia en los relatos policiales de Mempo Giardinelli

International audienceLa exitosa Luna caliente de Mempo Giardinelli, escrita en pleno Proceso, es una obra típicamente policial, que entra, a pesar de su carácter fantástico, en los cánones de la novela negra. En cambio, redactada durante la crisis del 2001, Cuestiones interiores se aparta de estos cánones para utilizar ciertos códigos y referencias del género negro en una novela literariamente muy ambiciosa y formalmente novedosa. Sin embargo, veremos que ambas novelas, con veinte años de distancia, nos proponen en sus distintos lenguajes unas alegorías de la Argentina de su tiempo. Pero sobre todo, veremos que, finalmente, la violencia presente en Luna caliente parece resurgir de otro modo, después de una larga acumulación que nos lleva desde los años de la Dictadura, hasta la crisis del 2001.Luna caliente, publié en 1983 pendant le «Proceso de reorganización nacional », est un polar qui, malgré la présence du fantastique, respecte les lois du genre noir. Tel n’est pas le cas de Cuestiones interiores qui, rédigé pendant la crise de 2001, s’éloigne des principes canoniques du genre pour en utiliser quelques codes et références au sein d’un roman littérairement très ambitieux et novateur dans sa forme. Cependant, malgré leurs vingt années d’écart, les deux romans nous proposent, chacun dans son langage propre, des allégories de l’Argentine contemporaine : nous verrons qu’un fil se tisse entre les deux romans, dans la mesure où la violence présente dans l’Argentine de la Dictature de Luna caliente semble resurgir autrement, après une longue accumulation, dans l’Argentine des années 2001

A new paradox of belief

In this paper I raise a paradox of belief inspired by Kripke’s ‘paradox of knowledge', which states that knowledge seems to make permissible an intuitively unacceptable form of dogmatism. This paradox of belief is based on an intuitively correct principle of doxastic coherence. My aim is to show that this paradox contributes to elucidating the puzzling nature of belief

The effort to be neutral

My aim in this article is to elucidate the nature of a form of intellectual and practical neutrality that is not covered by existing accounts of suspension of judgment. After rejecting some inadequate characterizations of this attitude of neutrality, I provide a positive characterization of it: it is a successful effort to resist certain tendencies that are part of the dispositional profile of the doxastic state one is in on a given issue. I conclude by saying a few words about the reasons for which this effort can be made, and by answering in the negative the question of whether all the attitudes that can be characterized as attitudes of committed neutrality are of the same type
