    Resumen gráfico y lingüístico de la calidad de la enseñanza en una discusión en gran grupo

    Con el objetivo de conseguir un resumen visual y lingüístico de la percepción de la calidad de la enseñanza en una discusión en gran grupo a través de un conjunto borroso, durante el curso académico 2014-2015 realizamos un estudio de campo con 49 estudiantes del grado de Maestro en Educación Infantil. Para ello nos apoyamos en un conjunto de diez rúbricas, el Instructional Quality Assessment (IQA), que permiten valorar diversos aspectos del proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje a través de una escala fija y discreta: 0, 1, 2, 3 ó 4 (Boston, 2012)

    LightDock: a new multi-scale approach to protein–protein docking

    Computational prediction of protein–protein complex structure by docking can provide structural and mechanistic insights for protein interactions of biomedical interest. However, current methods struggle with difficult cases, such as those involving flexible proteins, low-affinity complexes or transient interactions. A major challenge is how to efficiently sample the structural and energetic landscape of the association at different resolution levels, given that each scoring function is often highly coupled to a specific type of search method. Thus, new methodologies capable of accommodating multi-scale conformational flexibility and scoring are strongly needed. We describe here a new multi-scale protein–protein docking methodology, LightDock, capable of accommodating conformational flexibility and a variety of scoring functions at different resolution levels. Implicit use of normal modes during the search and atomic/coarse-grained combined scoring functions yielded improved predictive results with respect to state-of-the-art rigid-body docking, especially in flexible cases.B.J-G was supported by a FPI fellowship from the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness.     On the origin of the selectivity of plasmidic H-NS towards horizontally acquired DNA: Linking H-NS oligomerization and cooperative DNA binding

    The nucleoid-associated protein H-NS is a global modulator of the expression of genes associated with adaptation to environmental changes. A variant of H-NS expressed in the R27 plasmid was previously shown to selectively modulate the expression of horizontally acquired genes, with minimal effects on core genes that are repressed by the chromosomal form of H-NS. Both H-NS proteins are formed by an oligomerization domain and a DNA-binding domain, which are connected by a linker that is highly flexible in the absence of DNA. We studied DNA binding by means of oligomer-forming chimeric proteins in which domains of the chromosomal and plasmidic variants are exchanged, as well as in monomeric truncated forms containing the DNA-binding domain and variable portions of the linker. Point mutations in the linker were also examined in full-length and truncated H-NS constructs. These experiments show that the linker region contributes to DNA binding affinity and that it is a main component of the distinct DNA binding properties of chromosomal and plasmidic H-NS. We propose that interactions between the linker and DNA limit the flexibility of the connection between H- NS oligomerization and DNA binding and provide an allosteric indirect readout mechanism to detect long- range distortions of DNA, thus enabling discrimination between core and horizontally acquired DNA

    Precise ionospheric electron content monitoring from single- frequency GPS receivers

More than 90% of GPS receivers are implemented as low-cost single-frequency chipsets embedded in smartphones. This provides new opportunities, in particular for ionospheric sounding. In this context, we present the new sidereal days ionospheric graphic (SIg) combination of single-frequency GNSS measurements. SIg is able to monitor, for each given GNSS transmitter–receiver pair, the vertical total electron content (VTEC) relative to the previous observation with the same or almost the same line-of-sight (LOS) vector. In such arrangements the SIg multipath error mostly cancels, thus increasing the accuracy of the ¿VTEC significantly. This happens for the GPS constellation after one sidereal day (about 23 h 56 m) and for Galileo after 10 sidereal days approximately. Moreover, we show that the required calibration of the corresponding carrier phase ambiguity can be accurately performed by means of VTEC global ionospheric maps (GIMs). The results appear almost as accurate as those based on the dual-frequency technique, i.e., about 1 TECU or better, and with much more precision and resolution than the GIM values in the ionospheric region sounded by each given single-frequency receiver. The performance is demonstrated using actual data from 9 permanent GPS receivers during a total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017 over North America, where the corresponding ionospheric footprint is clearly detected in agreement with the total solar eclipse predictions. The advantages of extending SIg to lower carrier frequencies and the feasibility of applying it to other global navigation satellite system (GNSS) systems are also studied. This is shown in terms of a fully consistent VTEC depletion signature of the same eclipse phenomena, obtained with Galileo-only data in North America at mid and low latitude. Finally the SIg feasibility, including the cycle slip detection, is shown as well with actual mass-market single frequency GPS receivers at mid and high latitude.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Abnormal glycemic homeostasis at the onset of serious mental illnesses: A common pathway

    Objective: Patients with serious mental illnesses exhibit a reduced lifespan compared with the general population, a finding that can not solely rely on high suicide risk, low access to medical care and unhealthy lifestyle. The main causes of death are medical related pathologies such as type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease; however pharmacological treatment might play a role. Material and methods: We compared a two hour glucose load in naïve patients at the onset of a serious mental illness (N = 102) (84 patients with a first episode of schizophrenia and related disorders, 6 with a first episode of bipolar I disorder and 12 with a first episode of major depression disorder) with another psychiatric diagnose, adjustment disorder (N = 17) and matched controls (N = 98). Results: Young patients with serious mental illness showed an increased two hour glucose load compared with adjustment disorder and the control group. Mean two hour glucose values [±standard deviation] were: for schizophrenia and related disorders 106.51 mg/dL [±32.0], for bipolar disorder 118.33 mg/dL [±34.3], for major depressive disorder 107.42 mg/dL [±34.5], for adjustment disorder 79.06 mg/dL[±24.4] and for the control group 82.11 mg/dL [±23.3] (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Our results reflect an abnormal metabolic pathway at the onset of the disease before any pharmacological treatment or other confounding factors might have taken place. Our results suggest a similar glycemic pathway in serious mental illnesses and the subsequent need of primary and secondary prevention strategies

    Study of several interpolation schemes to provide ionospheric corrections for navigation

    Since the development of space based geodesic techniques, the increasing of the positioning accuracy has been a major goal. In this context, the effect of the ionosphere has been a key issue to be taken into account to improve the navigation results obtained using several types of receivers: from dual frequency phase receivers at distances greater than tens of kilometres of the nearest fixed site to single frequency code receivers. To overcome this problem, it is necessary either an accurate modelling of the ionosphere at the fixed stations and an optimum interpolation scheme for the rover receiver. This approach is either valid for single frequency users or rovers using dual frequency phase receiver. The current work studies the performance of different interpolation schemes such as linear interpolation and kriging, which can be implemented in a rover receiver in order to interpolate either the Slant Total Electron Content (from now on STEC) or the Double Differenced STEC from the transmitted corrections that are computed at the fixed stations.Peer Reviewe

    Performance of Waterfilling-based Schemes for Interference Cancellation in 4G Networks

The event Web site at http://cip2012.tsc.uc3m.es/In this work we consider the optimization of the power assigned to the user streams in a coordinated base station downlink environment with Orthogonal Frequency Division Modulation (OFDM). In this scenario the base stations perform distributed cooperative processing with a block diagonalization scheme to remove interference among users. Two schemes based on the waterfilling technique are proposed and compared to the optimal solution, which can be obtained numerically, by using convex optimization. We show that the proposed schemes achieve a performance, in terms of weighted sum rate, very close to the optimal, without the heavy computational complexity required by the numerical solution. These sum rates are compared in a simplified scenario consisting of two-user and two-cell.     Preventing Emotional Dysregulation: Acceptability and Preliminary Effectiveness of a DBT Skills Training Program for Adolescents in the Spanish School System

    Emotional dysregulation is a key factor in the development and maintenance of multiple disabling mental disorders through a person’s lifespan. Therefore, there is an urgent need to prevent emotional dysregulation as early as possible. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the acceptability and preliminary effectiveness of an adapted Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Training program for Emotional Problem Solving in Adolescents (DBT STEPS-A) during secondary school. The sample included 93 adolescents (mean age = 12.78; SD = 0.54; and 53% female) studying in their 2nd year of secondary school in a public center in Catalonia (Spain). Measures of acceptability, difficulties of emotional regulation, mental health problems, and life satisfaction were completed before and after participation in the DBT STEPS-A program during one academic year. The majority of students rated the program as useful (64%) and enjoyed the classes (62%) and 48% of them reported practicing the newly learned skills. Statistically significant improvements were revealed in some emotional regulation-related variables, namely the number of peer problems (p = 0.003; d = 0.52) and prosocial behaviors (p < 0.001; d = −0.82). Although non-significant, the scores in the remaining outcomes indicated a general positive trend in emotional dysregulation, mental health, and life satisfaction. The adapted DBT STEPS-A was very well-accepted and helped overcome some emotional regulation difficulties in Spanish adolescents

    Essential residues in the H-NS binding site of Hha, a co-regulator of horizontally acquired genes in Enterobacteria

    Proteins of the Hha/YmoA family co-regulate with H-NS the expression of horizontally acquired genes in Enterobacteria. Systematic mutations of conserved acidic residues in Hha have allowed the identification of D48 as an essential residue for H-NS binding and the involvement of E25. Mutations of these residues resulted in deregulation of sensitive genes in vivo. D48 is only partially solvent accessible, yet it defines the functional binding interface between Hha and H-NS confirming that Hha has to undergo a conformational change to bind H-NS. Exposed acidic residues, such as E25, may electrostatically facilitate and direct the approach of Hha to the positively charged region of H-NS enabling the formation of the final complex when D48 becomes accessible by a conformational change of Hha
