ABSTRACT: This Master’s graduation project “Commented translation of content on the website of the Faculty of Advertising, Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana”, compiles the process of the translation from Spanish into English of the text that contains the academic information of the faculty with the purpose to provide the information to the non-Hispanic audiences interested in the Advertising program on the UPB website. During the process, the translator addresses the difficulties faced due to the inconsistencies of the Source Text, providing an analysis on the consequences these have in the Target Text and the possibilities of translation. This work also includes a series of resources for translators that undertake an Advertising translation project. These resources include a Terminology Data Base containing syntax, lexical, and semantic element from both Source and Target Terms, as well as a token count and frequency of use on both languages. Additionally the inconsistencies found in the text were categorized along with their location, and finally, the translation is presented as a parallel text; all these for the use of the School of Languages of the Universidad de Antioquia. The analysis conducted in the process provides a starting point for a Research Study that can address the errors and mistakes on Source Texts and their incidence on the Target Text and how inadequate translations are often a result of these difficulties

Dancing in the sun:The musical as touristic hook in ‘Honeymoon’

The British/Spanish co-production Honeymoon (Luna de miel, Michael Powell, 1959) is a curious case of an export for foreign audiences that won the Technical Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festival yet was a commercial failure. Taking this now forgotten film as a case study, we will investigate the musical genre from a transnational perspective. Recently restored to its original length, Honeymoon includes compositions by Manuel de Falla and Sarasate, as well as performances by ballet dancer Ludmilla Tchérina and Spanish dance star Antonio (Ruiz Soler), both choreographed by Léonide Massine. We examine the interplay between national and transnational elements in a musical that tries to emulate the success of The Red Shoes (Michael Powell, Emeric Pressburger, 1948) by putting it in the context of the Spanish cultural and economic policies of promoting the country

An integrated targeted and untargeted approach for the analysis of ergot alkaloids in cereals using UHPLC - hybrid quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry

An ultra-high performance liquid chromatography hybrid quadrupole time of flight (Q-TOF) mass spectrometry (MS) method is described for the simultaneous quantitative determination of common ergot alkaloids and the screening, detection and identification of unexpected (less studied or novel) members of this class of toxic fungal secondary metabolites. The employed analytical strategy involves an untargeted data acquisition (consisting of full scan TOF MS survey and information dependent acquisition MS/MS scans) and the processing of data using both targeted and untargeted approaches. Method performance characteristics for the quantitative analysis of 6 common ergot alkaloids i.e. ergometrine, ergosine, ergotamine, ergocornine, ergocristine, ergokryptine and their corresponding epimers in rye were comparable to those previously reported for triple-quadrupole (QqQ) MS/MS. The method limits of quantification (LOQ) were in the range from 3 to 19 mu g/kg, and good linearity was observed for the different ergot alkaloids in the range from LOQ to 1000 mu g/kg. Furthermore, the method demonstrated good precision (relative standard deviations at 50 mu g/kg not higher than 14.6 and 16.2% for the intra-day and inter-day precision, respectively), and the trueness values at different concentration levels were all between 89 and 115%. The method was applied for the analysis of a set of 17 rye samples and demonstrated the presence of these ergot alkaloids in the range from <LOQ to 2,811 mu g/kg. Further mining of the same data based on a 'non-targeted peak finding' algorithm and the use of full MS and MS/MS accurate mass data allowed the detection and identification of 19 ergot alkaloids that are commonly not included in most analytical methods using QqQ instruments. Some of these alkaloids are reported for the first time in naturally contaminated samples

Child‐level factors affecting rate of learning to write in first grade

[EN] Background.Written composition requires handwriting, spelling, and text planning skills, all largely learned through school instruction. Students’ rate of learning to compose textin their first months at school will depend, in part, on their literacy-related abilities atschool start. These effects have not previously been explored.Aim.We aimed to establish the effects of various literacy-related abilities on thelearning trajectory of first-grade students as they are taught to write.Sample.179 Spanish first-grade students (94 female, mean age 6.1 years) writing 3,512texts.Method.Students were assessed at start of school for spelling, transcription fluency, letter knowledge, phonological awareness, handwriting accuracy, word reading, and non-verbal reasoning. They were then taught under a curriculum that included researcher-designed instruction in handwriting, spelling, and ideation. Students’ compositionperformance was probed at very regular intervals over their first 13 weeks at school.Results.Controlling for age, overall performance was predicted by spelling, transcrip-tion fluency, handwriting accuracy, word reading, and non-verbal reasoning. Moststudents showed rapid initial improvement, but then much slower learning. Weak spellers(and to a lesser extent less fluent hand-writers) showed weaker initial performance, butthen steady improvement across the study period.SIMinisterio de Economía y Competitivida
