Bullet Proof Vest using Non-Newtonian Fluid
Bullet proof vests, made of Kevlar are used for preventing projectiles from injuring humans. Soft armours are capable of protecting humans from low energy projectiles while hard-plate reinforced armours use metal plates, which weigh over 14+ kg for protection against high energy projectiles. NonNewtonian fluids which have time dependent properties (particularly viscosity) are prepared and tested for energy absorbing properties. It was proved that when Kevlar was used with Oobleck sample, the deformation produced in test plate was reduced considerably as compared to that of only Kevlar sample.
A comparative study of fractional order PIλ /PIλ Dμ tuning rules for stable first order plus time delay processes
Conventional PID tuning methods may not be sufficient to deal with complex processes of modern industry. For better control, fractional order PIλDµ controller was introduced as the generalization of classical PID controller with the help of non-integer order (fractional order) calculus. The fractional calculus uses integration and differentiation with a fractional order or complex order. The major advantage of fractional derivative is the ability to inherit the nature of the processes. In general, the control loop includes both fractional order process model and fractional order controller. However, the processes to be controlled are usually modeled as integer order models and controlled using fractional order controllers. But if the plant model is obtained as fractional model, it is converted into integer order model by approximating the fractional terms using different approximations proposed in the literature. With all the above mentioned advantages, several fractional order PIλ/PIλDµ tuning rules are proposed in the literature for integer order systems and researchers are still proposing the new rules. The main aim of this paper is to compare fractional order PI/PID tuning methods based on Integral of Absolute Error (IAE), Total Variation (TV) and Maximum Sensitivity (Ms). The main reason for choosing fractional order PIλ/PIλDµ controllers is their additional degrees of freedom that result in better control performance. These tuning rules were applied on several first order plus time delay processes subjected to step change in setpoint and disturbance

VALIDATED STABILITY-INDICATING LIQUID CHROMATOGRAPHIC METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION OF RALOXIFENE (ANTI-OSTEOPOROTIC AGENT) IN TABLETS
Raloxifene hydrochloride is a new anti-osteoporotic agent, effective in the treatment of breast cancer. A stability-indicating high-performance liquid chromatographic method was developed and validated for the determination of Raloxifene Hydrochloride in tablet dosage forms. Reversed-phase chromatography was performed on Shimadzu Model LC-20AD Prominence with SPD M 20A Diode array detector using a Phenomenex Lichrosphere 100 C-18 (250 mm × 4.6 mm i.d., 5 µm particle size) column with sodium acetate: methanol (40:60, V/V) as mobile phase with a flow rate of 1 ml/min. UV detection was performed at 287 nm. Linearity was observed in the concentration range of 1.0–250 μg/mL with regression equation y = 95604 x – 26215 with correlation coefficient of 0.9999. The LOD and LOQ were found to be 0.267 μg/mL and 0.813 μg/mL respectively. The percentage relative standard deviation in precision and accuracy studies was found to be less than 2%. Raloxifene hydrochloride was subjected to stress conditions of degradation in aqueous solutions including acidic, alkaline, oxidation and photolysis. It was found that the drug is highly resistant towards all degradations as the decomposition was less than 3.5%. The developed method was validated with regard to linearity, accuracy, precision, selectivity and robustness and the method was found to be precise, accurate, linear and specific. Keywords: Raloxifene hydrochloride, Isocratic elution, RP-HPLC, Validation, Stability-indicating, LOD, LOQ

Is UNESCO’s Undergraduate Bioethics Integrated Curriculum (Medical) fit for purpose?
In 2017, UNESCO introduced an Undergraduate Bioethics Integrated Curriculum to be taught in Indian medical schools, with an implied suggestion that it could subsequently be rolled out to medical schools in UNESCO’s other member states. Its stated aim is to create ethical awareness from an early stage of a doctor’s training by infusing ethics instructions throughout the entire undergraduate medical syllabus. There are advantages to a standardised integrated curriculum where none existed. However, the curriculum as presently drafted risks failing to achieve its laudable aims. There are important lessons to be drawn from UNESCO’s First Syllabus for Youth Bioethics Education (2018), which is aimed at schoolchildren and teenagers, and represents a creative, effective and culturally sensitive way to teach bioethics
Current Treatment and Outcomes Benchmark for Locally Advanced or Metastatic Urothelial Cancer From a Large UK-Based Single Centre
Objectives: To characterize treatment patterns and survival outcomes for patients with locally advanced or metastatic malignancy of the urothelial tract during a period immediately preceding the widespread use of immune checkpoint inhibitors in the UK. Patients and Methods: We retrospectively examined the electronic case notes of patients attending the Leeds Cancer Center, UK with locally advanced or metastatic urothelial carcinoma, receiving chemotherapy between January 2003 and March 2017. Patient characteristics, treatment patterns, and outcomes were collected. Summary and descriptive statistics were calculated for categorical and continuous variables as appropriate. The Kaplan–Meier method was used to estimate median survival and Cox regression proportional hazards model was used to explore relationships between clinical variables and outcome. Results: Two hundred and sixteen patients made up the study cohort, with a median age of 66 years (range: 35–83) and 72.7% being male. First-line treatment consisted of either a cisplatin- (44%) or carboplatin-based regimen (48%) in the majority of patients. Twenty seven percent of patients received a second-line of treatment (most commonly single-agent paclitaxel) following a first-line platinum containing regimen. Grade 4 neutropenia was observed in 19 and 27% of those treated with a first-line cisplatin- and carboplatin-based regimen, respectively. The median overall survival (mOS) of the study cohort was estimated to be 16.2 months (IQR: 10.6–28.3 months). Receipt by patients of cisplatin-based chemotherapy was associated with a longer mOS and this association persisted when survival analysis was adjusted for age, sex, performance status and presence of distant metastases. Conclusions: This study provides a useful benchmark for outcomes achieved in a real-world setting for patients with locally advanced or metastatic UC treated with chemotherapy in the immediate pre-immunotherapy era
SH3 interactome conserves general function over specific form
Src homology 3 (SH3) domains bind peptides to mediate protein–protein interactions that assemble and regulate dynamic biological processes. We surveyed the repertoire of SH3 binding specificity using peptide phage display in a metazoan, the worm Caenorhabditis elegans, and discovered that it structurally mirrors that of the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. We then mapped the worm SH3 interactome using stringent yeast two-hybrid and compared it with the equivalent map for yeast. We found that the worm SH3 interactome resembles the analogous yeast network because it is significantly enriched for proteins with roles in endocytosis. Nevertheless, orthologous SH3 domain-mediated interactions are highly rewired. Our results suggest a model of network evolution where general function of the SH3 domain network is conserved over its specific form
