    Design, Presentation Silver and Louis-Victor Fréret (1801-1879) in London and Montreal

    Fréret was one of many French sculptor-designers working in England during the early Victorian era who contributed to the advancement of British industrial design, particularly in silver and ceramics. None of these designers, however, has received his due from modern scholarship. This study provides a partial reconstruction of the career of Fréret, who worked during the 1840s and 1850s as a designer and modeller of presentation pieces for the distinguished London silver manufacturers, Mortimer & Hunt, Hancock and Edward Barnard & Sons. The Barnard daybooks at the Victoria and Albert Museum were a prime source. Besides analyzing highlight pieces, this study examines Fréret’s achievement against the background of the artistic conditions and influences of the time. It concludes with Fréret’s activity in Montreal and the attribution of four epergnes designed by him for the silversmith, Robert Hendery. These pieces demonstrate the dissemination to Canada from England of design concepts through an immigrant craftsman, and their modification to suit the special requirements of Canadian customers. Résumé Fréret fut l’un des dessinateurs/sculpteurs français actifs en Angleterre au début de l’ère victorienne qui contribuèrent au progrès du design britanniques, surtout dans les domaines de l’orfèvrerie et de la céramique. Les chercheurs de notre époque ont complètement méconnu ces créateurs. Le but de cette étude est de restituer la vie et l’œuvre de Fréret qui travailla pendant les années 1840 et 1850 comme dessinateur et sculpteur de pièces honorifiques pour les fabricants distingués de Londres, Mortimer & Hunt, Hancock, et Edward Barnard & Sons. Les archives de la compagnie Edward Barnard & Sons qui se trouvent au Victoria and Albert Museum ont été des documents fondamentaux pour cette recherche. En dehors de l’analyse des ouvrages les plus importants, cette étude vise à considérer le succès obtenu par Fréret en regard des conditions artistiques et des influences de son époque. Je présenterai dans la conclusion de cet article l’activité de Fréret à Montréal, ainsi que quatre surtouts de table en argent qui lui sont attribués et qu’il dessina pour l’orfèvre Robert Hendery. Ces pièces d’orfèvrerie montrent la diffusion de concepts du design anglais par les artisans immigrés ainsi que leur adaptation aux besoins des clients canadiens

    Search for a fourth generation t' quark in ppbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV

    We present a search for pair production of a fourth generation t' quark and its antiparticle, followed by their decays to a W boson and a jet, based on an integrated luminosity of 5.3/fb of proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV collected by the D0 Collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We set upper limits on the t't'bar production cross section that exclude at the 95% C.L. a t' quark that decays exclusively to W+jet with a mass below 285 GeV. We observe a small excess in the muon+jets channel which reduces the mass range excluded compared to the expected limit of 320 GeV in the absence of a signal

    Search for the standard model Higgs boson in ZH -> l+ l- bbbar production with the D0 detector in 9.7 fb-1 of ppbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV

    We present a search for the standard model (SM) Higgs boson produced in association with a Z boson in 9.7 fb-1 of ppbar collisions collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. Selected events contain one reconstructed Z-> e+e- or Z-> mu+mu- candidate and at least two jets, including at least one jet identified as likely to contain a b quark. To validate the search procedure, we also measure the cross section for ZZ production in the same final state. It is found to be consistent with its SM prediction. We set upper limits on the ZH production cross section times branching ratio for H->bbbar at the 95% C.L. for Higgs boson masses 9

    Observation of a narrow mass state decaying into Upsilon(1S) + gamma in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV

    Using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.3 fb^-1, we observe a narrow mass state decaying into Upsilon(1S)+gamma, where the Upsilon(1S) meson is detected by its decay into a pair of oppositely charged muons, and the photon is identified through its conversion into an electron-positron pair. The significance of this observation is 5.6 standard deviations. The mass of the state is centered at 10.551 \pm 0.014 (stat.) \pm 0.017 (syst.) GeV/c^2, which is consistent with that of the state recently observed by the ATLAS Collaboration

    Measurement of the production fraction times branching fraction f(b --> Λ_b)B(Λ_b --> J/ψΛ)

    The \Lambda_b(udb) baryon is observed in the decay \Lambda_b --> J/\psi \Lambda using 6.1 fb^{-1} of p\bar{p} collisions collected with the D0 detector at \sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV. The production fraction multiplied by the branching fraction for this decay relative to that for the decay B^0 --> J/\psi K^0_s is measured to be 0.345 \pm 0.034 (stat.) \pm 0.033 (syst.) \pm 0.003 (PDG). Using the world average value of f(b --> B^0)B(B^0 --> J/\psi K^0_s) = (1.74 \pm 0.08) \times 10^{-5}, we obtain f(b --> \Lambda_b)B(\Lambda_{b} --> J/\psi \Lambda) = (6.01 \pm 0.60 (stat.) \pm 0.58 (syst.) \pm 0.28 (PDG)) \times 10^{-5}. This measurement represents an improvement in precision by about a factor of three with respect to the current world average

    A Representation for Serial Robotic Tasks

    The representation for serial robotic tasks proposed in this thesis is a language of temporal constraints derived directly from a model of the space of serial plans. It was specifically designed to encompass problems that include disjunctive ordering constraints. This guarantees that the proposed language can completely and, to a certain extent, compactly represent all possible serial robotic tasks. The generality of this language carries a penalty. The proposed language of temporal constraints is NP-Complete. Specific methods have been demonstrated for normalizing constraints posed in this language in order to make subsequent sequencing and analysis more tractable. Using this language, the planner can specify necessary and alternative orderings to control undesirable interactions between steps of a plan. For purposes of analysis, the planner can factor a plan into strategies, and decompose those strategies into essential components. Using properly normalized constraint expressions the sequencer can derive admissible sequences and admissible next operations. Using these facilities, a robot can be given the specification of a task and it can adapt its sequence of operations according to run-time events and the constraints on the operations to be performed
