Portrayal of Jews in 19th and 20th Century British Novels

Since the time of Chaucer, British literature literally brimmed over with Jewish stereotypes. The image of a villainous Jew created in the Middle Ages and during the Elizabethan era represented a traditional pattern that was with slight modifications adopted by other authors of the following centuries. The main aim of this bachelor paper is to analyse Jewish stereotypes occuring in the three selected novels: Trilby by George du Maurier, Stamboul Train by Graham Greene and The Sins of the Father by Allan Massie. At the beginning a brief outline of the history of Jews in Britain is provided. The practical part focuses on negative and positive stereotypes occuring in the selected works, points out the common features of those images and compares them with their earlier representations. The attention is drawn to the influence of Biblical imagery and Christian attitudes on potraying the Jews and the influence of Jewish involvement in the field of finance and politics. The last chapter focuses on the post-war image of a Jew and the new perspectives in portraying the Jews in the novel by Allan Massie.Díla britské literatury doslova překypovala židovskými stereotypy již od doby Chaucera. Obrazy záporných postav Židů, které ožili v dílech autorů středověkého a alžbětínského dramatu, představovaly jakousi universální šablonu, která byla později přejímána ostatními autory. Hlavním cílem této práce je analýza židovských stereotypů, které se objevují ve třech vybraných románech: Trilby od George Du Mauriera, Vlak do Istanbulu od Grahama Greena a The Sins of the Father od Allana Massieho. Na začátku práce autorka podává stručný obraz historie židovského etnika v Británii. Praktická část analyzuje negativní a pozitivní obrazy Židů vyskytující se v daných románech, vyzdvihuje jejich společné rysy a porovnává je s jejich literárními předlohami. Pozornost je věnována také biblickému zobrazení Žida a postoji křesťanů k tomuto etniku, jež měl značný vliv na zobrazení Židů v literatuře. Dalším faktorem majícím vliv na vnímání Židů britskými autory je jejich angažovanost ve finanční a politické sféře. Poslední kapitola se zabývá zpodobněním Žida v dílech druhé poloviny 20. století, především poukazuje na nové stereotypy vyskytující se v díle Allana Massieho.Katedra anglistiky a amerikanistik

New psychometric approaches to personality measurement - digital footprints analysis

Digitální technologie se stávají neodmyslitelnou součástí našich profesních i osobních životů. Posíláme e-maily, sdílíme příspěvky na sociálních sítích, pořizujeme selfie fotografie. To přináší nové příležitosti pro využití jiného typu dat, než bylo dříve pro měření osobnosti v psychometrii typické. Předkládaná práce je zaměřená na možnosti využití digitálních stop a výsledků činnosti pro odhad osobnostních vlastností a inteligence. Literárně přehledová část se zabývá možnostmi měření, resp. predikce osobnostních vlastností pomocí analýzy textu, fotografií a uživatelského chování na internetu. Návrh výzkumu je vystavěn nad otázkou, s jakou přesností je možné predikovat osobnostní rysy měřené pomocí dotazníku HPI na základě analýzy stop a výsledků činnosti na profesní sociální síti LinkedIn. Poznatky z navrhovaného výzkumu mohou být potenciálně přínosné jako jeden zdroj informací při náboru či výběru zaměstnanců.Digital technologies have become an inherent part of both our personal and professional lives. This thesis deals with the possibilities of using digital footprints for personality traits and intelligence measurement. The first part of the thesis focuses on possibilities of personality traits estimation, or rather prediction, based on an analysis of text, photography and online user behaviour. The second part examines the extent to which is possible to estimate personality traits measured by Hogan Personal Inventory from digital footprints on the professional social network LinkedIn. Towards extracellular Ca2+ sensing by MRI: synthesis and calcium-dependent 1H and 17O relaxation studies of two novel bismacrocyclic Gd3+ complexes

Two new bismacrocyclic Gd3+ chelates containing a specific Ca2+ binding site were synthesized as potential MRI contrast agents for the detection of Ca2+ concentration changes at the millimolar level in the extracellular space. In the ligands, the Ca2+-sensitive BAPTA-bisamide central part is separated from the DO3A macrocycles either by an ethylene (L1) or by a propylene (L2) unit [H4BAPTA is 1,2-bis(o-aminophenoxy)ethane-N,N,N′,N′-tetraacetic acid; H3DO3A is 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7-triacetic acid]. The sensitivity of the Gd3+ complexes towards Ca2+ and Mg2+ was studied by 1H relaxometric titrations. A maximum relaxivity increase of 15 and 10% was observed upon Ca2+ binding to Gd2L1 and Gd2L2, respectively, with a distinct selectivity of Gd2L1 towards Ca2+ compared with Mg2+. For Ca2+ binding, association constants of log K = 1.9 (Gd2L1) and log K = 2.7 (Gd2L2) were determined by relaxometry. Luminescence lifetime measurements and UV–vis spectrophotometry on the corresponding Eu3+ analogues proved that the complexes exist in the form of monohydrated and nonhydrated species; Ca2+ binding in the central part of the ligand induces the formation of the monohydrated state. The increasing hydration number accounts for the relaxivity increase observed on Ca2+ addition. A 1H nuclear magnetic relaxation dispersion and 17O NMR study on Gd2L1 in the absence and in the presence of Ca2+ was performed to assess the microscopic parameters influencing relaxivity. On Ca2+ binding, the water exchange is slightly accelerated, which is likely related to the increased steric demand of the central part leading to a destabilization of the Ln–water binding interaction

The quality of life at patients with coeliac disease

The bachelor's thesis deals with the coeliac disease and the quality of life with this disease. It's divided into two parts - a theoretical part and a practical part. The first, theoretical part, contains description of coeliac disease with symptoms, diagnostic procedures, therapy and the history of disease, too. The second part is experimental. The quality of life at the patients with coeliac disease was uncovered through the question blank. The data were evaluated and the results are described in the second part of the bachelor's thesis. Physical effort was researched on men and women living in the Hradec Králové and neighbourhood mainly, but in the another cities in Czech republic, too

Analysis of training process in distance running events in two-year training period in years 2006-2008

ANALYSING OF TWO YEARS TRAINING MACROCYCLES (2006-2007 a 2007- 2008) RUNNER ON 1500 M Objectives: We focus on the contain of training unit, and types of endurance with respect to training sessions. We analyze special training exercises and methods in the season from the perspective of dynamic value changes and intensity workouts in that season. The main goal was to measure relationship between speed and endurance skills and evaluate their influence on the performance. Methods: In our thesis we have used the comparison analysis method of two years training cycles. We used percentage value for accurate quantifications, and qualitative analysis coming out from dividing whole running facility on general and special. We measure relationships between speed and endurance skills, and their influence on 1500 m distance. We analyze running log (OTU and STU), and following dynamic changes of these determinants. Results: We have described a training process of an advanced competitive runner in middle distance 1500 m at an efficiency level. We have found out that the general training was preferred rather than special training. The quality of the voice after the oncology therapy at the patients with carcinoma of larynx

Diplomová práce pojednává o kvalitě hlasu u pacientů, kteří prodělali chirurgickou či onkologickou terapii pro karcinom hrtanu. Je rozdělena do dvou hlavních částí - teoretické a výzkumné. První, teoretická část, pojednává o samotném onemocnění, jsou zde popsány nejen symptomy, diagnostika a terapie, ale i historie onemocnění a hlasové změny před i po léčbě s kvalitou hlasu. Druhá je výzkumná. Pomocí dotazníkového šetření byla zjišťována kvalita hlasu a na základě získaných údajů pak zhodnoceny nejčastější problémy, se kterými se pacienti po operaci, anebo po aktinoterapii, musí potýkat, a které jejich celkovou kvalitu hlasu ovlivňují v negativním slova smyslu. Fenomén metamorfózy ve viktoriánské literatuře

The central theme discussed in this work is the phenomenon of literary metamorphosis occurring in two works of Victorian fiction, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886) by Robert Louis Stevenson and The Island of Dr Moreau (1896) by Herbert George Wells. In the introductory chapter a definition together with the origins of 'literary metamorphosis' is provided. Since both works were produced during the Victorian Era, commonly referred to as the Age of Transition, the theoretical part focuses on the major social changes taking place during the reign of Queen Victoria. The subject of this thesis is a validation of an assessment centre for employee selection, e.g. examining the validity of this method. Currently, the assessment centre represents an often used method of employee selection. At the same time, however, its implementation is demanding from the financial, time and personal perspective. If the assessment centre shall be considered an effective employee selection method, it is essential to pay attention to its psychometric aspects, especially the validity of its findings. Person-centered approach in personality research and prediction of online environment behavior

The presented diploma thesis focuses on the person-centered approach in personality research and on the possibilities of predicting behavior in the online environment. The theoretical part defines different approaches to personality descriptions, with a special focus on the person-centered approach, variable-centered approach, and person-specific approach. The outputs of thematically relevant research studies are also summarized here. The empirical part describes the exploratory research, which aimed to examine the possibility of predicting the personality type of LinkedIn users in the context of the person-centered approach, based on an analysis of their profile and behavior associated with this professional social network. The standardized HEXACO-PI-R and 4Elements Personality Inventory® questionnaires were used in the research. Cluster analysis was performed on data from 118 participants who filled out the 4Elements Personality Inventory®. Based on that, 4 clusters that describes 52,2 % of the variance were formed. Furthermore, using multinomial logistic regression, two models predicting the probability of a person belonging to a certain cluster based on information about predictors were created.
