Mountain Parkway Edge Drain Inspection (September 29-October 5, 1989)

    Get PDF
On September 28, 1989, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet requested the Kentucky Transportation Center (KTC) to investigate an apparent drainage problem on the Mountain Parkway. The area of concern was a rehabilitation project starting at Milepost 16 and ending at the Stanton exit (Milepost 22). The old PCC pavement was being broken and seated and then overlaid with approximately nine inches of asphaltic concrete. Longitudinal edge drains Advanedge and Contech Stripdrain 100 had been installed prior to the breaking and seating

Utilization and Cost Effectiveness of Retread Tires

    Get PDF
This report discusses the possible utilization and east effectiveness of using retreaded tires on state vehicles in Kentucky. Included is information obtained from a telephone survey of local companies and two state Dot agencies. Information was also obtained from a survey conducted on the AASHTO-VAN computer network. This report also contains a cost comparison of retread prices versus new tire prices

Field Performance Report on PVC Pipe Campbell County

    Get PDF
This report documents the installation and performance of PVC pipe installed on KY 9 in Campbell County. The pipe installed was Perma-Loc, manufactured by J-M Manufacturing Company, Inc. Pipes appear to be performing well with the clean coarse sand backfill.lt is apparent the pipe is brittle at lower temperatures. and caution should be exercised during cold weather construction. It is apparent that the contractor achieved substantial compaction around the haunches and the side of the pipe which is helping to reduce pipe deflection. In July 1995, the pipes will have been installed for approximately two years. Minor changes in pipe deflection are still occurring in approximately 40 percent of the pipes. The other 60 percent appear to be stabilized

Performance and Cost Effectiveness of Pavement Edge Drains

    Get PDF
It is apparent from research conducted under this study that edge drains increase subgrade strength through the removal of water. It is also apparent in most cases that the edge drains increase pavement life by approximately seven years. Current cost benefit analysis indicates that edge drains can provide a cost savings of approximately $200,000 dollars a mile over the life of the pavement. Research also indicates that if edge drains are not properly installed and maintained they can doe more damage then good. It is evident that edge drains should be inspected with a pipeline camera prior to final acceptance and prior to rehabilitation

    Laboratory Evaluation of Edge Drains

This report documents laboratory test results performed on four brands of highway edge drains. The four brands included in this study are Hydraway (by Monsanto), Akwadrain (by International Construction Equipment, Inc.), Advantage (by Advanced Drainage Systems), and PDS 40 (by Pro Drain Systems)

Field Performance Report on Corrugated Polyethylene Pipe on KY 17 Kenton County

    Get PDF
This report documents the installation and performance of corrugated smooth lined polyethylene pipe installed during construction of KY 17 in Kenton County. The majority of the pipe installed was N-12 pipe manufactured by Advanced Drainage Systems, Inc., and is designated as ADS N-12. ADS N-12 is a corrugated high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe. The pipe has a corrugated exterior for increased strength and a smooth interior to provide maximum flow capacity. Sags in grade, misalignment, poor coupling, and vertical deformation were observed during visual inspections and do not appear to be a material related problem but are largely due to poor construction techniques. The pipes appear to be functioning satisfactorily even with sagging, misalignments, and vertical deformation. Pipes that have vertical deformation over 10 percent should be monitored for any additional movement. This report makes recommendation on the usage of polyethylene pipe in Kentucky

This report documents the installation and performance of corrugated smooth lined polyethylene pipe installed during construction of South Forbes Road in Fayette County, KY 54 in Daviess County, US 62 in McCracken County, Nicholasville Road in Fayette County, US 68/KY 80 in Warren County, KY 127 in Franklin County, US 62 in Hardin County, Donaldson Road and KY 236 in Kenton County, KY 17 in Kenton County, and Anderson Road in Kenton County. The majority of the pipe installed was N-12 pipe manufactured by Advanced Drainage Systems, Inc., and is designated as ADS N-12. ADS N-12 is a corrugated high-density polyethylene (HOPE) pipe. The pipe has a corrugated exterior for increased strength and a smooth interior to provide maximum flow capacity. A similar product, Hi-Q manufactured by Hancor, was also installed on portions of the project on Anderson Road. This report makes recommendation on the usage of polyethylene pipe in Kentucky

Follow-Up Inspection of Premature Cracking on the National Turnpike, Jefferson County

    Get PDF
This report discusses the investigation of the premature cracking that has been occurring on the National Turnpike, Jefferson County since 1989. A report was issued in 1990, KTC-90-5. This report documents performance to date. A detailed distress survey was performed evaluating each slab throughout the project site. The distress survey indicates that substantial pavement cracking has occurred since the last visual inspection in 1990. An intense maintenance program is recommended
