How do residents perceive tourism development? A small community perspective

    No full text
This study examines residents' attitudes and behaviors toward possible tourism development in a small community. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews with 20 residents living in a small community, namely Kapısuyu Village in Turkey. Findings suggest that trust in authorities, involvement and the current state of the local economy are important determinants of locals' perceptions of tourism impacts. Although residents have some reservations on negative impacts of tourism development, community members favor tourism development in their small community due to positive benefits it is expected to generate. Findings also indicate that while residents favor tourism development, they want a tourism development that is sustainable and small. Both theoretical and practical implications of the findings are discussed and conclusions are drawn on the basis of study findings

AN EXAMINATION OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TEACHERS' PROFESSIONAL SELF-ESTEEM AND EMPATHIC SKILLS

WOS: 000269853900012The relationship between teachers' professional self-esteem and empathic skills was assessed. Participants were 216 female teachers working in preschools in the city center of Ankara. Data were gathered using a general information form; the Scale for Professional Self-Esteem (Aricak, 1999) was used to measure teachers' professional self-esteem; and empathic skills were measured with the Scale for Empathic Skills - B Form (Dokmen, 1988). A positive relationship was found between teachers' professional self-esteem and empathic skills (r = .17, p > .05)

The Time Course Changes In Expression Of Aquaporin 4 And Aquaporin 1 Following Global Cerebral Ischemic Edema In Rat

Background: The aim of this global cerebral ischemia study was to study the changes in expression levels of aquaporin 4 (AQP4) and AQP1 over time. Methods: Sprague-Dawley type male rats were divided into six groups. Sham group and ischemia/reperfusion were performed on five other groups using the four-vessel occlusion model. Reperfusion was done 30 min after the occlusion, and each group was tested at 1, 6, 12, 24, and 48 h for brain wet-dry weight ratio and AQP4 and AQP1 expression levels using immunohistochemistry. To prove ischemia development exists in both hippocampal neurons and epithelia of choroid plexus, hematoxylin, and eosin and  neuronal marker (NeuN) immune-staining have been applied to the sham experimental group at 48 h. AQP4 expression levels are also measured with western blotting. Results: After ischemia/reperfusion it is observed that the decrease in brain water content between 12 and 24 h was statistically significant (P < 0.01). In parallel and based on immunohistochemical staining, AQP4 expression levels did not exhibit any statistically significant change. AQP4 levels did not show any statistically significant change in western blotting. AQP1 expression in choroid plexus epithelial cells decreased at the 12 and 24 h but increased in 48 h (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Lack of change in AQP4 expression levels is thought as its dual role in formation and elimination of ischemic brain edema. Decrease in AQP1 expression levels in 24 h can be explained with necrosis in choroid plexus after ischemia and the increase in 48 h mark can be related to recovery in choroid plexus.PubMe

The clinical, functional, and radiological features of hand osteoarthritis: TLAR-osteoarthritis multi-center cohort study

WOS:000815860200001Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the clinical, functional, and radiological features of hand osteoarthritis (OA) and to examine their relationships in different geographic samples of the Turkish population. Patients and methods: Between April 2017 and January 2019, a total of 520 patients (49 males, 471 females; mean age: 63.6 +/- 9.8 years) with hand OA were included in the study from 26 centers across Turkey by the Turkish League Against Rheumatism (TLAR). The demographic characteristics, grip strengths with Jamar dynamometer, duration of hand pain (month), the severity of hand pain (Visual Analog Scale [VAS]), and morning stiffness were evaluated. The functional disability was evaluated with Duruoz Hand Index (DHI). The Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) OA scoring system was used to assess the radiological stage of hand OA. Results: The DHI had significant correlations with VAS-pain (r=0.367, p0.05). The differences between the groups of radiological hand OA grades in terms of age (p=0.007), VAS-pain (p0.05 for all). Conclusion: In our population, the patients with hand OA had pain, functional disability, and weak grip strength. The functional impairment was significantly correlated with the severity of the pain, and the functional status was worse in high radiological hand OA grades

Thrombotic distal middle cerebral artery occlusion produced by topical FeCl3 application: a novel model suitable for intravital microscopy and thrombolysis studies

    No full text
Intravital or multiphoton microscopy and laser-speckle imaging have become popular because they allow live monitoring of several processes during cerebral ischemia. Available rodent models have limitations for these experiments; e.g., filament occlusion of the proximal middle cerebral artery (MCA) is difficult to perform under a microscope, whereas distal occlusion methods may damage the MCA and the peri-arterial cortex. We found that placement of a 10% FeCl3-soaked filter paper strip (0.3 × 1 mm2) on the duramater over the trunk of the distal MCA through a cranial window for 3 minutes induced intraarterial thrombus without damaging the peri-arterial cortex in the mouse. This caused a rapid regional cerebral blood flow decrease within 10 minutes and total occlusion of the MCA segment under the filter paper in 17±2 minutes, which resulted in a typical cortical infarct of 27±4 mm3 at 24 hours and moderate sensorimotor deficits. There was no significant hemispheric swelling or hemorrhage or mortality at 24 hours. Reperfusion was obtained in half of the mice with tissue plasminogen activator, which allowed live monitoring of clot lysis along with restoration of tissue perfusion and MCA flow. In conclusion, this relatively simple and noninvasive stroke model is easy to perform under a microscope, making it suitable for live imaging and thrombolysis studies

Evaluation of DNA Damage in Patients with a Neuroendocrine Tumor

    No full text
Objective: Neuroendocrine tumors develop from the neuroendocrine cells of the endocrine system. As these tumors are extremely slow growing compared with other cancers, they often take years to reach a measurable dimension, thus leading to the late diagnosis, which has adverse effects on the survival and quality of life of patients. There is a link between many types of cancer and genomic instability, thus the markers associated with genomic instability can be used for early diagnosis of the disease or cancer-related changes. Comet assay is the most commonly used method to test genomic instability or DNA damage. To the best of our knowledge, no data are available on DNA damage in patients with neuroendocrine tumors. This study aimed to investigate the possible risk of DNA damage in a patient with neuroendocrine tumors using the comet assay
