Different twins in the millisecond pulsar recycling scenario: optical polarimetry of PSR J1023+0038 and XSS J12270-4859
We present the first optical polarimetric study of the two transitional
pulsars PSR J1023+0038 and XSS J12270-4859. This work is focused on the search
for intrinsical linear polarisation (LP) in the optical emission from the two
systems. We carried out multiband optical and NIR photo-polarimetry of the two
systems using the ESO NTT at La Silla (Chile), equipped with the EFOSC2 and the
SOFI instruments. XSS J12270-4859 was observed during its radio-pulsar state;
we did not detect LP in all bands, with 3 sigma upper limits of, e.g., 1.4% in
the R-band. We built the NIR-optical averaged spectral energy distribution
(SED) of the system, that could be well described by an irradiated black body
with radius and albedo ,
without the need of further components (thus excluding the visible presence of
an extended accretion disc and/or of relativistic jets). The case was different
for PSR J1023+0038, that was in its accretion phase during our campaign. We
measured a LP of and in the V and R bands,
respectively. The phase-resolved polarimetric curve of the source in the R-band
reveals a hint of a sinusoidal modulation at the source 4.75 hr orbital period,
peaked at the same orbital phase as the light curve. The measured LP of PSR
J1023+0038 could in principle be interpreted as scattering with free electrons
(that can be found in the accretion disc of the system or even in the hot
corona that surrounds the disc itself) or to synchrotron emission from a
relativistic particles jet or outflow. However, the NIR-optical SED of the
system built starting from our dataset did not suggest the presence of a jet.
We conclude that the optical LP observed for PSR J1023+0038 is possibly due to
Thomson scattering with electrons in the disc, as also suggested from the
possible modulation of the R-band LP at the system orbital period.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables. Accepted for publication in Sec. 7.

Institutional histories, seasonal floodplains (mares), and livelihood impacts of fish stocking in the Inner Niger River Delta of Mali
The Community-based Fish Culture in Seasonal Floodplains and Irrigation Systems (CBFC) project is a five year research project supported by the Challenge Program on Water and Food (CPWF), with the aim of increasing productivity of seasonally occurring water bodies through aquaculture. The project has been implemented in Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Mali and Vietnam, where technical and institutional options for community based aquaculture have been tested. The project began in 2005 and was completed in March 2010. The seasonally flooded depressions in the Inner Niger Delta (known as mares) represent a critical fishery resource for the inhabitants of the village of Komio, and at present, access is open to all residents. A proposal to build stocked fish enclosures in the main village mare presents potential benefits and risks. On one hand, overall productivity in the mare could be significantly increased, providing important sources of protein and cash during the annual drought period, when few livelihood activities can be performed and when village livelihoods are at their most vulnerable. Enhanced productivity in mares may also decrease local household pressures for seasonal labor migration. On the other hand, a resulting increase in the value of these mares may encourage elite capture of project benefits or rentseeking by certain village leaders of the landowning Marka ethnic group. Using qualitative interviews and focus group discussions, the study provides evidence of how local institutional and leadership capacity for equitable common property resource management have evolved since the introduction of irrigated farming systems (known as PΘrimΦtres IrriguΘs Villageois or PIVs) in the 1990s.Fishing rights, River fisheries, Livelihoods

On the Optical -- X-ray correlation from outburst to quiescence in Low Mass X-ray Binaries: the representative cases of V404 Cyg and Cen X-4
Low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) show evidence of a global correlation of
debated origin between X-ray and optical luminosity. We study for the first
time this correlation in two transient LMXBs, the black hole V404 Cyg and the
neutron star Cen X-4, over 6 orders of magnitude in X-ray luminosity, from
outburst to quiescence. After subtracting the contribution from the companion
star, the Cen X-4 data can be described by a single power law correlation of
the form , consistent with disk reprocessing. We
find a similar correlation slope for V404 Cyg in quiescence (0.46) and a
steeper one (0.56) in the outburst hard state of 1989. However, V404 Cyg is
about times optically brighter, at a given keV X-ray
luminosity, compared to Cen X-4. This ratio is a factor of 10 smaller in
quiescence, where the normalization of the V404 Cyg correlation also changes.
We show that once the bolometric X-ray emission is considered and the known
main differences between V404 Cyg and Cen X-4 are taken into account (a larger
compact object mass, accretion disk size, and the presence of a strong jet
contribution in the hard state for the black hole system) the two systems lie
on the same correlation. In V404 Cyg, the jet dominates spectrally at
optical-infrared frequencies during the hard state, but makes a negligible
contribution in quiescence, which may account for the change in its correlation
slope and normalization. These results provide a benchmark to compare with data
from the 2015 outburst of V404 Cyg and, potentially, other transient LMXBs as

Search for a Radio Pulsar in the Remnant of Supernova 1987A
We have observed the remnant of supernova SN~1987A (SNR~1987A), located in
the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), to search for periodic and/or transient radio
emission with the Parkes 64\,m-diameter radio telescope. We found no evidence
of a radio pulsar in our periodicity search and derived 8 upper bounds
on the flux density of any such source of Jy at 1.4~GHz and
Jy at 3~GHz. Four candidate transient events were detected with
greater than significance, with dispersion measures (DMs) in the
range 150 to 840\,cmpc. For two of them, we found a second pulse at
slightly lower significance. However, we cannot at present conclude that any of
these are associated with a pulsar in SNR~1987A. As a check on the system, we
also observed PSR~B054069, a young pulsar which also lies in the LMC. We
found eight giant pulses at the DM of this pulsar. We discuss the implications
of these results for models of the supernova remnant, neutron star formation

The appearance of a compact jet in the soft-intermediate state of 4U 1543-47
Recent advancements in the understanding of jet-disc coupling in black hole
candidate X-ray binaries (BHXBs) have provided close links between radio jet
emission and X-ray spectral and variability behaviour. In 'soft' X-ray states
the jets are suppressed, but the current picture lacks an understanding of the
X-ray features associated with the quenching or recovering of these jets. Here
we show that a brief, ~4 day infrared (IR) brightening during a predominantly
soft X-ray state of the BHXB 4U 1543-47 is contemporaneous with a strong X-ray
Type B quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO), a slight spectral hardening and an
increase in the rms variability, indicating an excursion to the
soft-intermediate state (SIMS). This IR 'flare' has a spectral index consistent
with optically thin synchrotron emission and most likely originates from the
steady, compact jet. This core jet emitting in the IR is usually only
associated with the hard state, and its appearance during the SIMS places the
'jet line' between the SIMS and the soft state in the hardness-intensity
diagram for this source. IR emission is produced in a small region of the jets
close to where they are launched (~ 0.1 light-seconds), and the timescale of
the IR flare in 4U 1543-47 is far too long to be caused by a single, discrete
ejection. We also present a summary of the evolution of the jet and X-ray
spectral/variability properties throughout the whole outburst, constraining the

B cells are capable of independently eliciting rapid reactivation of encephalitogenic CD4 T cells in a murine model of multiple sclerosis
<div><p>Recent success with B cell depletion therapies has revitalized efforts to understand the pathogenic role of B cells in Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Using the adoptive transfer system of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), a murine model of MS, we have previously shown that mice in which B cells are the only MHCII-expressing antigen presenting cell (APC) are susceptible to EAE. However, a reproducible delay in the day of onset of disease driven by exclusive B cell antigen presentation suggests that B cells require optimal conditions to function as APCs in EAE. In this study, we utilize an <i>in vivo</i> genetic system to conditionally and temporally regulate expression of MHCII to test the hypothesis that B cell APCs mediate attenuated and delayed neuroinflammatory T cell responses during EAE. Remarkably, induction of MHCII on B cells following the transfer of encephalitogenic CD4 T cells induced a rapid and robust form of EAE, while no change in the time to disease onset occurred for recipient mice in which MHCII is induced on a normal complement of APC subsets. Changes in CD4 T cell activation over time did not account for more rapid onset of EAE symptoms in this new B cell-mediated EAE model. Our system represents a novel model to study how the timing of pathogenic cognate interactions between lymphocytes facilitates the development of autoimmune attacks within the CNS.</p></div
Repetitive Segmental Structure of the Transducin β Subunit: Homology with the CDC4 Gene and Identification of Related mRNAs
Retinal transducin, a guanine nucleotide regulatory protein (referred to as a G protein) that activates a cGMP phosphodiesterase in photoreceptor cells, is comprised of three subunits. We have identified and analyzed cDNA clones of the bovine transducin β subunit that may be highly conserved or identical to that in other G proteins. From the cDNA nucleotide sequence of the entire coding region, the primary structure of a 340-amino acid protein was deduced. The encoded β subunit has a Mr of 37,375 and is comprised of repetitive homologous segments arranged in tandem. Furthermore, significant homology in primary structure and segmental sequence exists between the β subunit and the yeast CDC4 gene product. The Mr 37,375 β subunit polypeptide is encoded by a 2.9-kilobase (kb) mRNA. However, there exists in retina other β-related mRNAs that are divergent from the 2.9-kb mRNA on the basis of oligonucleotide and primer-extended probe hybridizations. All mammalian tissues and clonal cell lines that have been examined contain at least two β-related mRNAs, usually 1.8 and 2.9 kb in length. These results suggest that the mRNAs are the processed products of a small number of closely related genes or of a single highly complex β gene
