Antibacterial properties of phosphine gold(i) complexes with 5-fluorouracil

    Get PDF
New gold(I) complexes with coordination to 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), an anticancer drug with antibacterial properties, have been synthesised and characterised, and are the first reported examples of 5-FU–Au compounds. These new complexes show high solution stability, even in the presence of a cysteine derivative, and so were evaluated as antibacterial compounds against model Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. All the complexes show excellent antibacterial activity against Gram-positive B. subtilis, most of them improving the activity of 5-FU alone. Furthermore, these new complexes are also active against Gram-negative E. coli, where [Au(5-FU)(PTA)], the complex with the smallest phosphane, is the most bactericidal, 32 times more active than 5-FU on its own

A esas preguntas responde Doña Elena Blasco, cuyas consideraciones se traducen aquíOn November 14, 2018, the II General Seminar on Domestic Work was held, within the framework of the Permanent Seminar with the same name. At 16.00 a round table was planned in which CCOO, UGT and USO were represented. The act was moderated by Professor Patricia Nieto Rojas. The subject of the debate focused on one of the future Challenges of Domestic Service Work, that of the collective representation of domestic workers. The moderator would ask some questions that would be discussed by the table among themselves, and with the audience. Doña Elena Blasco answers those questions, whose considerations are translated here.Universidad Pablo de Olavid

Arc welding of Dissimilar Metals:FEA and Experiments

    Get PDF
Assuming an elliptical disk heat source, several results of theoretical and experimental investigations on heat transfer in copper - low carbon steel welded joints are presented in the first part of the paper. Using thin sheets, temperature variation in the thickness direction is negligible and heat flow is considered two-dimensional. Convection and radiation influence, and thermo-physical properties depending on the temperature are considered in the model. Measurements and visualization of the temperatures distribution have been made during welding using infrared thermography. The proposed theoretical method using finite element analysis was validated for the temperatures prediction in the welded joint. In the second part of the paper, the influence of the welding process on the structural modifications and grains’ size in the heat affected zone (HAZ) of both base materials (BM) is described. Discussion on the graphs of temperatures variation vs. microstructural analysis enables conclusions on the potential undesired structural changes and related preventing measures. The asymmetric position of the heat source closer to the material having a higher thermal conductivity is an effective method for controlling the temperature field

    Get PDF
[ABSTRACT] The SIOS-m project has consisted primarily on the creation of a simulation platform oriented to mobile services. In order to develop the ideal platform for the project it has been necessary to perform a prior study of the technologies associated to these services and based on these studies, build an intelligent application. This application is capable of centralizing the Communication process between the end-user and the services offered by the service provider, and furthermore adapt itself to the needs of each user

Complement Mediated Endothelial Damage in Thrombotic Microangiopathies

    Get PDF
Thrombotic microangiopathies (TMA) constitute a group of different disorders that have a common underlying mechanism: the endothelial damage. These disorders may exhibit different mechanisms of endothelial injury depending on the pathological trigger. However, over the last decades, the potential role of the complement system (CS) has gained prominence in their pathogenesis. This is partly due to the great efficacy of complement-inhibitors in atypical hemolytic syndrome (aHUS), a TMA form where the primary defect is an alternative complement pathway dysregulation over endothelial cells (genetic and/or adquired). Complement involvement has also been demonstrated in other forms of TMA, such as thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) and in Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli hemolytic uremic syndrome (STEC-HUS), as well as in secondary TMAs, in which complement activation occurs in the context of other diseases. However, at present, there is scarce evidence about the efficacy of complement-targeted therapies in these entities. The relationship between complement dysregulation and endothelial damage as the main causes of TMA will be reviewed here. Moreover, the different clinical trials evaluating the use of complement-inhibitors for the treatment of patients suffering from different TMA-associated disorders are summarized, as a clear example of the entry into a new era of personalized medicine in its management

Integrating HBIM models in the management of the public use of heritage buildings

[EN] The greatest challenge in managing public access to heritage buildings and ensuring the long-term feasibility of their reuse is to establish a sustainable relationship between visitors and assets. The aim of this paper is thus to identify the potential role of Historic Building Information Modelling (HBIM) for public use in heritage buildings. The study, which is part of a design science research project, limits its scope to the development of the two first stages of a comprehensive HBIM protocol for the public use of heritage, focusing on visitor management, programming preventative conservation, and heritage interpretation and dissemination to solve the difficulties detected in the management of these four areas. The methodology followed involves a literature review, case study analysis, interviews with stakeholders, field visits, and analysis of technical documents. Results indicate that HBIM can help to improve and optimize the management of the public use of historic buildings.Authors thank the Editorial Board of the Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering and the reviewers at the 6th BIM-Lean workshop held at the University of Huddersfield for their reviews and useful comments.
