    The Atmospheric Monitoring System of the JEM-EUSO Space Mission

    An Atmospheric Monitoring System (AMS) is a mandatory and key device of a space-based mission which aims to detect Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR) and Extremely-High Energy Cosmic Rays (EHECR) from Space. JEM-EUSO has a dedicated atmospheric monitoring system that plays a fundamental role in our understanding of the atmospheric conditions in the Field of View (FoV) of the telescope. Our AMS consists of a very challenging space infrared camera and a LIDAR device, that are being fully designed with space qualification to fulfil the scientific requirements of this space mission. The AMS will provide information of the cloud cover in the FoV of JEM-EUSO, as well as measurements of the cloud top altitudes with an accuracy of 500 m and the optical depth profile of the atmosphere transmittance in the direction of each air shower with an accuracy of 0.15 degree and a resolution of 500 m. This will ensure that the energy of the primary UHECR and the depth of maximum development of the EAS ( Extensive Air Shower) are measured with an accuracy better than 30\% primary energy and 120 g/cm2g/cm^2 depth of maximum development for EAS occurring either in clear sky or with the EAS depth of maximum development above optically thick cloud layers. Moreover a very novel radiometric retrieval technique considering the LIDAR shots as calibration points, that seems to be the most promising retrieval algorithm is under development to infer the Cloud Top Height (CTH) of all kind of clouds, thick and thin clouds in the FoV of the JEM-EUSO space telescope

    Targeting best agricultural practices to enhance ecosystem services in European mountains

    Agri-environmental policies in Europe are failing to sufficiently address ongoing environmental degradation, biodiversity decline, climate impacts, and societal demands for sustainability. To reverse this, policymakers, practitioners, and farmers need better guidance on which specific agricultural practice/s should be promoted and how to adapt current practices to reach the desired objectives. Here we use social valuation tools to elucidate the relationship between agricultural practices and the provision of key ecosystem services in mountains, including maintenance of scenery from agricultural landscapes, conservation of biodiversity, regulation of climate change through carbon sequestration, production of local quality products, maintenance of soil fertility, and prevention of forest wildfires. We use as case studies two contrasting but representative mountain agroecosystems in the Mediterranean and Nordic regions of Europe. We analyze the best agricultural practices in both agroecosystems to reach the targeted environmental outcomes under three plausible policy scenarios. We find significant differences in the average contribution of agricultural practices to ecosystem services provision, which suggest the need for regionalizing the research efforts and, consequently, the design of agri-environmental policies. However, we also identify practices for ecosystem service delivery across policy scenarios and agroecosystems. Among these, grazing and silviculture practices such as extending the grazing period, grazing in semi-natural habitats, grazing in remote and abandoned areas, adapting stocking rate to the carrying capacity, and moving flocks seasonally, stand out for their relevance in all policy scenarios. These results highlight the potential of adequate grazing and silviculture practices to deliver bundles of ecosystem services. Our study provides guidance to design agri-environmental policies in Europe that focus on rewarding farmers for their sustainable management of natural resources, climate change mitigation and adaption and biodiversity conservation

    La incorporación del hierro a la construcción en Alicante: la llegada del ferrocarril a la ciudad

    In the second half of the nineteenth century, railway stations developed new building systems, with iron as the main component. The covering of large open spaces over the platforms was required as a new structural challenge. In Spain, Alicante was the first maritime city with a rail line connected with Madrid. Factors such as the importance of the port, its proximity to the capital and the favorable topography of the land were decisive in their choice. On 25 May 1858 the line was inaugurated by Queen Elizabeth II. Three decades later, Andalusian station connecting with the South was built. It has now been restored and is the seat of the House of the Mediterranean. This article shows the origins of these two buildings, which have been preserved structural systems that were designed over 150 years ago.En la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, las estaciones de ferrocarril desarrollaron nuevos sistemas constructivos, con el hierro como principal componente. Las cubiertas de los andenes exigían nuevos retos estructurales buscando la diafanidad y máxima luz entre sus apoyos. En España, Alicante fue la primera ciudad marítima conectada con una línea férrea con Madrid. Factores como la importancia del puerto, su proximidad a la capital y la favorable orografía del terreno fueron determinantes en su elección. El 25 de Mayo de 1858 quedó inaugurada la línea por la reina Isabel II. Tres décadas después, se construyó la estación de Los Andaluces que conectaba con el Sur. Actualmente ha sido restaurada y es la sede de la Casa del Mediterráneo. El presente artículo muestra los orígenes de estos dos edificios, que han podido conservar los sistemas estructurales con los que fueron diseñados hace más de 150 años

    Association between GNRHR, LHR and IGF1 polymorphisms and timing of puberty in male Angus cattle

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In bovines, there are significant differences within and among beef breeds in the time when bulls reach puberty. Although the timing of puberty is likely to be a multigenic trait, previous studies indicate that there may also be single genes that exert major effects on the timing of puberty within the general population. Despite its economic importance, there are not many SNPs or genetic markers associated with the age of puberty in male cattle. In the present work, we selected three candidate genes, <it>GNRHR</it>, <it>LHR </it>and <it>IGF1</it>, and associated their polymorphisms with the age of puberty in Angus male cattle.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>After weaning, 276 Angus males were measured every month for weight (W), scrotal circumference (SC), sperm concentration (C) and percentage of motility (M). A total of 4 SNPs, two within <it>GNRHR</it>, one in <it>LHR </it>and one in <it>IGF1 </it>were genotyped using the pyrosequencing technique. <it>IGF1-SnaBI SNP </it>was significant associated (P < 0.01) with age at SC 28 cm, but it were not associated with age at M 10% and C 50 million. Genotype <it>CC </it>exhibited an average age at SC 28 cm of 7 and 11 days higher than <it>CT </it>(p = 0.037) and <it>TT </it>(p = 0.012), respectively. This SNP explained 1.5% of the genetic variance of age of puberty at SC28. <it>LHR-I499L</it>, <it>GNRHR-SNP5 </it>and <it>GNRHR-SNP6 </it>were not associated with any of the measurements. However, <it>GNRHR </it>haplotypes showed a suggestive association with age at SC 28 cm.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The findings presented here could support the hypothesis that <it>IGF1 </it>is a regulator of the arrival to puberty in male calves and is involved in the events that precede and initiate puberty in bull calves. Given that most studies in cattle, as well as in other mammals, were done in female, the present results are the first evidence of markers associated with age at puberty in male cattle.</p

    Comprehensive evaluation and implementation of improvement actions in butcher shops

    Foodborne pathogens can cause acute and chronic diseases and produce a wide range of symptoms. Since the consumption of ground beef is a risk factor for infections with some bacterial pathogens, we performed a comprehensive evaluation of butcher shops, implemented improvement actions for both butcher shops and consumers, and verified the impact of those actions implemented. A comprehensive evaluation was made and risk was quantified on a 1-100 scale as high-risk (1-40), moderate-risk (41-70) or low-risk (71-100). A total of 172 raw ground beef and 672 environmental samples were collected from 86 butcher shops during the evaluation (2010-2011) and verification (2013) stages of the study. Ground beef samples were analyzed for mesophilic aerobic organisms, Escherichia coli and coagulase-positive Staphylococcus aureus enumeration. Salmonella spp., E. coli O157:H7, non-O157 Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC), and Listeria monocytogenes were detected and isolated from all samples. Risk quantification resulted in 43 (50.0%) high-risk, 34 (39.5%) moderate-risk, and nine (10.5%) low-risk butcher shops. Training sessions for 498 handlers and 4,506 consumers were held. Re-evaluation by risk quantification and microbiological analyses resulted in 19 (22.1%) high-risk, 42 (48.8%) moderate-risk and 25 (29.1%) low-risk butcher shops. The count of indicator microorganisms decreased with respect to the 2010-2011 period. After the implementation of improvement actions, the presence of L. monocytogenes, E. coli O157:H7 and stx genes in ground beef decreased. Salmonella spp. was isolated from 10 (11.6%) ground beef samples, without detecting statistically significant differences between both study periods (evaluation and verification). The percentage of pathogens in environmental samples was reduced in the verification period (Salmonella spp., 1.5%; L. monocytogenes, 10.7%; E. coli O157:H7, 0.6%; non-O157 STEC, 6.8%). Risk quantification was useful to identify those relevant facts in butcher shops. The reduction of contamination in ground beef and the environment was possible after training handlers based on the problems identified in their own butcher shops. Our results confirm the feasibility of implementing a comprehensive risk management program in butcher shops, and the importance of information campaigns targeting consumers.
