Nature of the surface compounds and reactions observed on graphite electrodes
The nature and composition of the surface of pyrolytic graphite and the consequent possible effects, when the material is used as an electrode, are considered on the basis of the structure of the graphite and of the handling and/or treatment to which the electrodes may have been exposed. Because of the relatively limited studies on pyrolytic graphite, certain aspects of the behavior of other types of graphite and of carbon are discussed owing to their probable relation to the behavior of pyrolytic graphite. An appreciation of the constitution of graphite electrodes in terms of surface compounds and of the possible interaction of these compounds with solution species or their reaction products, when the electrodes are used in electrolytic processes, is essential for their optimum utilization. The main areas surveyed are the structure of pyrolytic graphite as related to electrode usage, types of possible compound formation, electrolytic behavior of graphite electrodes, and formation of carbon-oxygen and related organic surface compounds with the resulting influence on adsorption and other phenomena.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/22000/1/0000413.pd

Nkx2-5 and Sarcospan genetically interact in the development of the muscular ventricular septum of the heart
The muscular ventricular septum separates the flow of oxygenated and de-oxygenated blood in air-breathing vertebrates. Defects within it, termed muscular ventricular septal defects (VSDs), are common, yet less is known about how they arise than rarer heart defects. Mutations of the cardiac transcription factor NKX2-5 cause cardiac malformations, including muscular VSDs. We describe here a genetic interaction between Nkx2-5 and Sarcospan (Sspn) that affects the risk of muscular VSD in mice. Sspn encodes a protein in the dystrophin-glycoprotein complex. Sspn knockout (Sspn(KO)) mice do not have heart defects, but Nkx2-5(+/â)/Sspn(KO) mutants have a higher incidence of muscular VSD than Nkx2-5(+/â) mice. Myofibers in the ventricular septum follow a stereotypical pattern that is disrupted around a muscular VSD. Subendocardial myofibers normally run in parallel along the left ventricular outflow tract, but in the Nkx2-5(+/â)/Sspn(KO) mutant they commonly deviate into the septum even in the absence of a muscular VSD. Thus, Nkx2-5 and Sspn act in a pathway that affects the alignment of myofibers during the development of the ventricular septum. The malalignment may be a consequence of a defect in the coalescence of trabeculae into the developing ventricular septum, which has been hypothesized to be the mechanistic basis of muscular VSDs
Reconstructing the Life of an Unknown (ca. 500 Years-Old South American Inca) Mummy - Multidisciplinary Study of a Peruvian Inca Mummy Suggests Severe Chagas Disease and Ritual Homicide
The paleopathological, paleoradiological, histological, molecular and forensic investigation of a female mummy (radiocarbon dated 1451-1642 AD) provides circumstantial evidence for massive skull trauma affecting a young adult female individual shortly before death along with chronic infection by Trypanosoma cruzi (Chagas disease). The mummy (initially assumed to be a German bog body) was localized by stable isotope analysis to South America at/near the Peruvian/Northern Chilean coast line. This is further supported by New World camelid fibers attached to her plaits, typical Inca-type skull deformation and the type of Wormian bone at her occiput. Despite an only small transverse wound of the supraorbital region computed tomography scans show an almost complete destruction of face and frontal skull bones with terrace-like margins, but without evidence for tissue reaction. The type of destruction indicates massive blunt force applied to the center of the face. Stable isotope analysis indicates South American origin: Nitrogen and hydrogen isotope patterns indicate an extraordinarily high marine diet along with C4-plant alimentation which fits best to the coastal area of Pacific South America. A hair strand over the last ten months of her life indicates a shift to a more "terrestric" nutrition pattern suggesting either a move from the coast or a change in her nutrition. Paleoradiology further shows extensive hypertrophy of the heart muscle and a distended large bowel/rectum. Histologically, in the rectum wall massive fibrosis alternates with residual smooth muscle. The latter contains multiple inclusions of small intracellular parasites as confirmed by immunohistochemical and molecular ancient DNA analysis to represent a chronic Trypanosoma cruzi infection. This case shows a unique paleopathological setting with massive blunt force trauma to the skull nurturing the hypothesis of a ritual homicide as previously described in South American mummies in an individual that suffered from severe chronic Chagas disease
Bubble Growth in Superfluid 3-He: The Dynamics of the Curved A-B Interface
We study the hydrodynamics of the A-B interface with finite curvature. The
interface tension is shown to enhance both the transition velocity and the
amplitudes of second sound. In addition, the magnetic signals emitted by the
growing bubble are calculated, and the interaction between many growing bubbles

Thermal conductivity and photoluminescence of light-emitting silicon nitride films
Silicon-rich and rare-earth-doped nitride materials are promising candidates for silicon-compatible photonic sources. This work investigates the thermal conductivity and photoluminescence (PL) of light emitting samples fabricated with a range of excess silicon concentrations and annealing temperatures using time-domain picosecond thermoreflectance and time-resolved photoluminescence. A direct correlation between the thermal conductivity and photoluminescence dynamics is demonstrated, as well as a significant reduction of thermal conductivity upon incorporation of erbium ions. These findings highlight the role of annealing and stoichiometry control in the optimization of light emitting microstructures suitable for the demonstration of efficient Si-compatible light sources based on the silicon nitride platform. The NA48 event-building PC farm
The NA48 experiment at the CERN SPS aims to measure the parameter of direct CP violation in the neutral kaon system with an accuracy of . Based on the requirements of: \\\\ * high event rates (up to 10 kHz) with negligible dead time;\\ * support for a variety of detectors with very wide variation in the number of readout channels;\\ * data rates of up to 150 MByte/s sustained over the beam burst;\\ * level-3 filtering and remote data logging in the CERN computer center; \\\\ the collaboration has designed and built a modular pipelined data flow system with 40 MHz sampling rate. The architecture combines custom-designed components with commercially available hardware for cost effectiveness and flexibility. To increase the available data bandwidth and to add filtering and monitoring capabilities, the original custom-built event builder hardware has been replaced by a farm of 24 Intel PentiumII based PCs running the Linux operating system during the shutdown between the 1997 and 1998 data taking periods. During the data taking period 1998 the system has been successfully operated taking ca. 70 Terabyte of data
