A new combination and change in rank in Polycarpon (Caryophyllaceae), endemic to California, U.S.A., and Mexico
The name Polycarpon depressum Nutt. (Caryophyllaceae) is here investigated and lectotypified. According to a recent molecular investigation and based on the morphology and ecology of the taxon, the new combination and change in rank for P. tetraphyllum (L.) L. subsp. depressum (Nutt.) Iamonico are proposed for these plants endemic to California, U.S.A., and northern Mexico. A description of the subspecies is provided as is a comparison with the similar taxa P. tetraphyllum subsp. tetraphyllum, P. tetraphyllum subsp. alsinifolium (Biv.) Ball, and P. tetraphyllum subsp. diphyllum (Cav.) O. Bolòs & Font Quer
Firsthand Opiates Abuse on Social Media: Monitoring Geospatial Patterns of Interest Through a Digital Cohort
In the last decade drug overdose deaths reached staggering proportions in the
US. Besides the raw yearly deaths count that is worrisome per se, an alarming
picture comes from the steep acceleration of such rate that increased by 21%
from 2015 to 2016. While traditional public health surveillance suffers from
its own biases and limitations, digital epidemiology offers a new lens to
extract signals from Web and Social Media that might be complementary to
official statistics. In this paper we present a computational approach to
identify a digital cohort that might provide an updated and complementary view
on the opioid crisis. We introduce an information retrieval algorithm suitable
to identify relevant subspaces of discussion on social media, for mining data
from users showing explicit interest in discussions about opioid consumption in
Reddit. Moreover, despite the pseudonymous nature of the user base, almost 1.5
million users were geolocated at the US state level, resembling the census
population distribution with a good agreement. A measure of prevalence of
interest in opiate consumption has been estimated at the state level, producing
a novel indicator with information that is not entirely encoded in the standard
surveillance. Finally, we further provide a domain specific vocabulary
containing informal lexicon and street nomenclature extracted by user-generated
content that can be used by researchers and practitioners to implement novel
digital public health surveillance methodologies for supporting policy makers
in fighting the opioid epidemic.Comment: Proceedings of the 2019 World Wide Web Conference (WWW '19

Taxonomic revision of the genus Alternanthera (Amaranthaceae) in Italy
A taxonomic revision of the genus Alternanthera (Amaranthaceae) in Italy is here presented. Field surveys were carried out during the period 2007–2013. Thirty-six herbaria (both European and American) were consulted as well as extensive literature was analyzed. Four taxa are recognized, all of them to be considered aliens native to South America. Information about nomenclature (accepted names, main synonyms, and types), morphology, chromosome number, alien status (at national and regional levels), occurrence in Italy (at regional and provincial scale), ecology (preferential habitat, phenology, and elevation), taxonomical notes, and Italian vernacular names were provided for each taxon. A diagnostic key was given. For the nomenclatural purposes the generic name Alternanthera and its type was discussed, and the names A. paronychioides and A. pungens were studied and typified (lecto- and neotype, respectively) on specimens preserved at PH and P
Impact of Future Remnant Liver Volume on Post-Hepatectomy Regeneration in Non-Cirrhotic Livers
Objective: The purpose of the study is to detect if some parameters can be considered as predictors of liver regeneration in two different patient populations composed of in living donors for adult to adult living donor liver transplant and patients with hepatic malignancies within a single institution.Summary Background Data: Preoperative multi-detector computed tomography volumetry is an essential tool to assess the volume of the remnant liver. Methods: a retrospective analysis from an ongoing clinical study on 100 liver resections, between 2004 and 2010. 70 patients were right lobe living donors for liver transplantation and 30 patients were resected for treatment of tumors. Pre-surgical factors such as age, weight, height, body mass index (BMI), original liver volume, future remnant liver volume (FRLV), spleen volume, liver function tests, creatinine, platelet count, steatosis, portal vein embolization (PVE) and number of resected segments were analyzed to evidence potential markers for liver regeneration. Results: Follow-up period did not influence the amount of liver regenerated: the linear regression evidenced that there is no correlation between percentage of liver regeneration and time of follow-up (p=0.88). The pre-surgical variables that resulted markers of liver regeneration include higher preoperative values of BMI (p=0.01), bilirubin(p=0.04), glucose (p=0.05) and GGT (p=0.014); the most important association was revealed regarding the lower FRLV (pConclusions: Liver regeneration follows similar pathway in living donor and in patients resected for cancer. Small FRLV tends to regenerate more and faster, confirming that a larger resections may lead to a greater promotion of liver regeneration in patients with optimal conditions in terms of body habitus, preoperative liver function tests and glucose level

Generalized Quantifiers: Logic and Language
The Generalized Quantifiers Theory, I will argue, in the second half of last Century has led to an important rapprochement, relevant both in logic and in linguistics, between logical quantification theories and the semantic analysis of quantification in natural languages. In this paper I concisely illustrate the formal aspects and the theoretical implications of this rapprochement
Yeast Irc6p is a novel type of conserved clathrin coat accessory factor related to small G proteins.
Clathrin coat accessory proteins play key roles in transport mediated by clathrin-coated vesicles. Yeast Irc6p and the related mammalian p34 are putative clathrin accessory proteins that interact with clathrin adaptor complexes. We present evidence that Irc6p functions in clathrin-mediated traffic between the trans-Golgi network and endosomes, linking clathrin adaptor complex AP-1 and the Rab GTPase Ypt31p. The crystal structure of the Irc6p N-terminal domain revealed a G-protein fold most related to small G proteins of the Rab and Arf families. However, Irc6p lacks G-protein signature motifs and high-affinity GTP binding. Also, mutant Irc6p lacking candidate GTP-binding residues retained function. Mammalian p34 rescued growth defects in irc6 cells, indicating functional conservation, and modeling predicted a similar N-terminal fold in p34. Irc6p and p34 also contain functionally conserved C-terminal regions. Irc6p/p34-related proteins with the same two-part architecture are encoded in genomes of species as diverse as plants and humans. Together these results define Irc6p/p34 as a novel type of conserved clathrin accessory protein and founding members of a new G protein-like family
