    Water exercises and quality of life during pregnancy

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In Brazil, concern with the quality of life of pregnant women is one of the points emphasized in the Program for the Humanization of Prenatal Care and Childbirth launched in 2000. However, there are few references in the literature on the role of either land or water-based physical exercise on women's quality of life during pregnancy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a physical exercise program of water aerobics on the quality of life (QOL) of sedentary pregnant women.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A comparative observational study involving sedentary low-risk pregnant women bearing a single fetus with gestational age less than 20 weeks at the time of admission to the study, who were receiving antenatal care at a public health service. One group of 35 women was given routine antenatal care, while another group of 31 women, in addition to receiving the same routine care as the first group, also participated in three classes of water aerobics per week. QOL was evaluated by applying the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire in both groups at the 20<sup>th</sup>, 28<sup>th </sup>and 36<sup>th </sup>weeks of pregnancy. In the same occasions, women also answered another questionnaire about their experience with pregnancy and antenatal care.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The great majority of the participants considered that the practice of water aerobics had benefitted them in some way. QOL scores were found to be high in both groups during follow-up. There was no association between the practice of water aerobics and QOL.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Further studies involving larger sample sizes should be conducted in different sociocultural contexts and/or using other instruments to adequately evaluate the QOL of women during pregnancy.</p

    EphA3 Expressed in the Chicken Tectum Stimulates Nasal Retinal Ganglion Cell Axon Growth and Is Required for Retinotectal Topographic Map Formation

    BACKGROUND: Retinotopic projection onto the tectum/colliculus constitutes the most studied model of topographic mapping and Eph receptors and their ligands, the ephrins, are the best characterized molecular system involved in this process. Ephrin-As, expressed in an increasing rostro-caudal gradient in the tectum/colliculus, repel temporal retinal ganglion cell (RGC) axons from the caudal tectum and inhibit their branching posterior to their termination zones. However, there are conflicting data regarding the nature of the second force that guides nasal axons to invade and branch only in the caudal tectum/colliculus. The predominant model postulates that this second force is produced by a decreasing rostro-caudal gradient of EphA7 which repels nasal optic fibers and prevents their branching in the rostral tectum/colliculus. However, as optic fibers invade the tectum/colliculus growing throughout this gradient, this model cannot explain how the axons grow throughout this repellent molecule. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: By using chicken retinal cultures we showed that EphA3 ectodomain stimulates nasal RGC axon growth in a concentration dependent way. Moreover, we showed that nasal axons choose growing on EphA3-expressing cells and that EphA3 diminishes the density of interstitial filopodia in nasal RGC axons. Accordingly, in vivo EphA3 ectodomain misexpression directs nasal optic fibers toward the caudal tectum preventing their branching in the rostral tectum. CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrated in vitro and in vivo that EphA3 ectodomain (which is expressed in a decreasing rostro-caudal gradient in the tectum) is necessary for topographic mapping by stimulating the nasal axon growth toward the caudal tectum and inhibiting their branching in the rostral tectum. Furthermore, the ability of EphA3 of stimulating axon growth allows understanding how optic fibers invade the tectum growing throughout this molecular gradient. Therefore, opposing tectal gradients of repellent ephrin-As and of axon growth stimulating EphA3 complement each other to map optic fibers along the rostro-caudal tectal axis

    Global fine-resolution data on springtail abundance and community structure

    Springtails (Collembola) inhabit soils from the Arctic to the Antarctic and comprise an estimated ~32% of all terrestrial arthropods on Earth. Here, we present a global, spatially-explicit database on springtail communities that includes 249,912 occurrences from 44,999 samples and 2,990 sites. These data are mainly raw sample-level records at the species level collected predominantly from private archives of the authors that were quality-controlled and taxonomically-standardised. Despite covering all continents, most of the sample-level data come from the European continent (82.5% of all samples) and represent four habitats: woodlands (57.4%), grasslands (14.0%), agrosystems (13.7%) and scrublands (9.0%). We included sampling by soil layers, and across seasons and years, representing temporal and spatial within-site variation in springtail communities. We also provided data use and sharing guidelines and R code to facilitate the use of the database by other researchers. This data paper describes a static version of the database at the publication date, but the database will be further expanded to include underrepresented regions and linked with trait data.</p

    Infográficos: possibilidade de atividades de ensino para aulas de Física e Química

    International audienceThis article presents a study about the use of Infographics in Physics and Chemistry classes in High School (EM), as a proposal for the insertion of Digital Technologies (TD) in education. The data collection took place on the WEB from the key words and expressions: Infographics, Infographics in Science Teaching. The Infographic is considered a tool of authorship that allows visual representations of information (photography, graphs, tables, etc.) and allows teachers and students to make a synthesis of what was studied about a certain subject, besides being authors of their own materials of study. As conclusions of this study, we understand that the use of infographics in Physics and Chemistry classes contributes to the integration of the concepts studied, stimulates students to scientific initiation and allows teachers and students to become authors of their own study materials, each characteristic in this technological age and ease of access to information.Resumo Este artigo apresenta um estudo acerca do uso de Infográficos nas aulas de Física e Química, no Ensino Médio (EM), como uma proposta para a inserção das Tecnologias Digitais (TD) na educação. O levantamento de dados ocorreu na WEB a partir das expressões: Infográficos, Infográficos no Ensino de Ciências. O Infográfico é considerado uma ferramenta de autoria que permite representações visuais e textuais de informação e possibilita aos professores e estudantes realizar uma síntese do que foi estudado sobre um determinado tema, além de serem autores de seus próprios materiais de estudo. Como conclusões desse estudo, entendemos que o uso de infográficos nas aulas de Física e Química contribui para a integração dos conceitos estudados, estimula os estudantes à iniciação científica e permite que professores e estudantes tornem-se autores de seus próprios materiais de estudo, característica cada vez mais marcante nessa era tecnológica e de facilidade de acesso às informações
