    Dynamics in the ordered and disordered phases of barocaloric adamantane

    High-entropy order–disorder phase transitions can be used for efficient and eco-friendly barocaloric solid-state cooling. Here the barocaloric effect is reported in an archetypal plastic crystal, adamantane. Adamantane has a colossal isothermally reversible entropy change of 106 J K1 kg1 . Extremely low hysteresis means that this can be accessed at pressure differences less than 200 bar. Configurational entropy can only account for about 40% of the total entropy change; the remainder is due to vibrational effects. Using neutron spectroscopy and supercell lattice dynamics calculations, it is found that this vibrational entropy change is mainly caused by softening in the high-entropy phase of acoustic modes that correspond to molecular rotations. We attribute this difference in the dynamics to the contrast between an ‘interlocked’ state in the low-entropy phase and sphere-like behaviour in the high-entropy phase. Although adamantane is a simple van der Waals solid with near-spherical molecules, this approach can be leveraged for the design of more complex barocaloric molecular crystals. Moreover, this study shows that supercell lattice dynamics calculations can accurately map the effect of orientational disorder on the phonon spectrum, paving the way for studying the vibrational entropy, thermal conductivity, and other thermodynamic effects in more complex materials

    Using GIS to integrate old and new archaeological data from Stone Age deposits in Karonga, Malawi

    The Karonga District of northern Malawi has an extensive Stone Age archaeological record, primarily represented by stone artefacts that occur in both superficial and buried contexts. Work conducted in the 1960s provided initial documentation of this record. Some of this was presented in summary form in a small number of publications. However, most data were restricted to unpublished field notes, maps, and other static or largely inaccessible formats. GIS has been an essential tool for bringing together these diverse datasets in a digital format to facilitate integration of new research and promote reinvestigation of old sites. Examples from both the regional and site scale demonstrate how old data have been combined with recent survey and excavation data to document, analyse, interpret, and archive current knowledge about the rich Stone Age record of northern Malawi. A significant result from this approach has been the suggested reinterpretation of the Mwanganda’s Village Site

    Reductions in radiographic progression in early RA over 25-years: changing contribution from RF in 2 multi-centre UK inception cohorts

    Objectives: To assess 5-year progression of erosions and Joint Space Narrowing (JSN), and their associations with RF status in two large, multi-centre early-RA cohorts spanning 25-years. Methods: Radiographic joint damage was recorded using the Sharp/van der Heijde (SvdH) method in the Early RA Study (ERAS) 1986-2001, and the Early RA Network (ERAN) 2002-2013. Mixed-effects negative-binomial regression estimated changes in radiographic damage over 5-years, including erosions and JSN separately. Rheumatoid Factor (RF), along with age, sex and baseline markers of disease activity were controlled for. Results: 1,216 patients from ERAS and 446 from ERAN had radiographic data. Compared to ERAS, ERAN patients had a lower mean total SvdH score at baseline (ERAN=6.2 vs. ERAS=10.5, p<0.001), and mean annual rate of change (ERAN=2.5 vs. ERAS=6.9 per year, p<0.001). 74% of ERAS and 27% of ERAN patients progressed ≥5 units. Lower scores at baseline in ERAN were largely driven by reductions in JSN (ERAS=3.9 vs. ERAN=1.2, p<0.001), along with erosions (ERAS=1.9 vs. ERAN=0.8, p<0.001). RF was associated with greater progression in each cohort, but the absolute difference in mean annual rate of change for RF positive patients was substantially higher for ERAS (RF+= 8.6 vs. RF-= 5.1, p<0.001), relative to ERAN (RF+= 2.0 vs. RF-= 1.9, p=0.855). Conclusion: Radiographic progression has significantly reduced between the two cohorts, associated with lower baseline damage and other factors, including changes in early DMARD use. The impact of RF status as a prognostic marker of clinically meaningful change in radiographic progression has markedly diminished in the context of more modern treatment.     SYNTHESYS+ Virtual Access - Report on the Ideas Call (October to November 2019)

    The SYNTHESYS consortium has been operational since 2004, and has facilitated physical access by individual researchers to European natural history collections through its Transnational Access programme (TA). For the first time, SYNTHESYS+ will be offering virtual access to collections through digitisation, with two calls for the programme, the first in 2020 and the second in 2021. The Virtual Access (VA) programme is not a direct digital parallel of Transnational Access - proposals for collections digitisation will be prioritised and carried out based on community demand, and data must be made openly available immediately. A key feature of Virtual Access is that, unlike TA, it does not select the researchers to whom access is provided. Because Virtual Access in this way is new to the community and to the collections-holding institutions, the SYNTHESYS+ consortium invited ideas through an Ideas Call, that opened on 7th October 2019 and closed on 22nd November 2019, in order to assess interest and to trial procedures. This report is intended to provide feedback to those who participated in the Ideas Call and to help all applicants to the first SYNTHESYS+Virtual Access Call that will be launched on 20th of February 2020.This is an open access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (CC BY 4.0), which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author and source are credited.     A systematic review of the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of peer education and peer support in prisons.

    BACKGROUND: Prisoners experience significantly worse health than the general population. This review examines the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of peer interventions in prison settings. METHODS: A mixed methods systematic review of effectiveness and cost-effectiveness studies, including qualitative and quantitative synthesis was conducted. In addition to grey literature identified and searches of websites, nineteen electronic databases were searched from 1985 to 2012. Study selection criteria were: Population: Prisoners resident in adult prisons and children resident in Young Offender Institutions (YOIs). INTERVENTION: Peer-based interventions Comparators: Review questions 3 and 4 compared peer and professionally led approaches. OUTCOMES: Prisoner health or determinants of health; organisational/ process outcomes; views of prison populations. STUDY DESIGNS: Quantitative, qualitative and mixed method evaluations. RESULTS: Fifty-seven studies were included in the effectiveness review and one study in the cost-effectiveness review; most were of poor methodological quality. Evidence suggested that peer education interventions are effective at reducing risky behaviours, and that peer support services are acceptable within the prison environment and have a positive effect on recipients, practically or emotionally. Consistent evidence from many, predominantly qualitative, studies, suggested that being a peer deliverer was associated with positive effects. There was little evidence on cost-effectiveness of peer-based interventions. CONCLUSIONS: There is consistent evidence from a large number of studies that being a peer worker is associated with positive health; peer support services are also an acceptable source of help within the prison environment and can have a positive effect on recipients.     The Earliest Post-Paleozoic Freshwater Bivalves Preserved in Coprolites from the Karoo Basin, South Africa

    Background: Several clades of bivalve molluscs have invaded freshwaters at various times throughout Phanerozoic history. The most successful freshwater clade in the modern world is the Unionoida. Unionoids arose in the Triassic Period, sometime after the major extinction event at the End-Permian boundary and are now widely distributed across all continents except Antarctica. Until now, no freshwater bivalves of any kind were known to exist in the Early Triassic. Principal Findings: Here we report on a faunule of two small freshwater bivalve species preserved in vertebrate coprolites from the Olenekian (Lower Triassic) of the Burgersdorp Formation of the Karoo Basin, South Africa. Positive identification of these bivalves is not possible due to the limited material. Nevertheless they do show similarities with Unionoida although they fall below the size range of extant unionoids. Phylogenetic analysis is not possible with such limited material and consequently the assignment remains somewhat speculative. Conclusions: Bivalve molluscs re-invaded freshwaters soon after the End-Permian extinction event, during the earliest part of the recovery phase during the Olenekian Stage of the Early Triassic. If the specimens do represent unionoids then these Early Triassic examples may be an example of the Lilliput effect. Since the oldest incontrovertible freshwater unionoids are also from sub-Saharan Africa, it is possible that this subcontinent hosted the initial freshwater radiation of the Unionoida.     Ethnobotany of the Samburu of Mt. Nyiru, South Turkana, Kenya

    Traditional plant use is of extremely high importance in many societies, and prevalent in African communities. This knowledge is however dwindling rapidly due to changes towards a more Western lifestyle. The influence of modern tourism cannot be neglected in this context. This paper examines the plant use of the Samburu of the Mt. Nyiru area in Northern Kenya. The Samburu pastoralists of Kenya are still amongst the most traditional communities of the country and have retained most of their knowledge about the use of a large part of the plants in their environment for a wide variety of purposes. The results indicate that the local population has a very high knowledge of the plants in their surroundings, and attributes a purpose to a large percentage of the plants found. 448 plant species were collected, identified and their Samburu names and traditional uses recorded. 199 species were reported as of "no use". The high proportion of 249 plant species however had some traditional use: The highest number (180 species) was used as fodder, followed by 80 species that had medicinal use. Firewood (59 species), construction (42 species), tools (31 species), food (29 species) and ceremonial use (19 species) ranked far behind. Traditionally the Samburu attribute most illnesses to the effect of pollutants that block or inhibit digestion. This can include "polluted" food, contagion through sick people as well as witchcraft. In most cases the treatment of illness involves herbal purgatives to cleanse the patient. There are however frequent indications of plant use for common problems like wounds, parasites, body aches and burns. The change from a nomadic to a more sedentary lifestyle, often observed in other areas of the country, has affected the Samburu of remote Mt. Nyiru to a much lesser extent and did so far not lead to a major loss of traditional plant knowledge.
