A study of photometric errors on two different photographic plate scans
A considerable number of photographic plate archives exist world wide and
digitization is in progress or already has been finished. Not only different
type of scanners were used but also spatial resolution and dynamic range often
were limited due to process duration and storage space. The open question is
the effect of these limitations on the results. 61 high resolution photographic
plates of the Gamma Cyg field from the Bruce astrograph at Landessternwarte
Heidelberg--K\"onigstuhl (aperture 40~cm, focal length 200~cm) had been
digitized both in Heidelberg and Sonneberg. Both scanners were set to 16 bit
dynamic range. The Heidelberg scanner was operated at 2540 dpi resolution,
resulting in a scale of 1 arcsec/pixel, while the Sonneberg scanner was
operated at 1200 dpi, yielding a scale of 2.1 arsec/pixel.
In the presented study the standard deviation of non--variable star light
curves were examined in dependence of brightness and plate coordinates in both
series. No evident differences could be found. A comparison of the analysis of
both scan series will be presented.Comment: Poster presented at the Annual meeting of the German Astronomical

Asymptotic Level Density of the Elastic Net Self-Organizing Feature Map
Whileas the Kohonen Self Organizing Map shows an asymptotic level density
following a power law with a magnification exponent 2/3, it would be desired to
have an exponent 1 in order to provide optimal mapping in the sense of
information theory. In this paper, we study analytically and numerically the
magnification behaviour of the Elastic Net algorithm as a model for
self-organizing feature maps. In contrast to the Kohonen map the Elastic Net
shows no power law, but for onedimensional maps nevertheless the density
follows an universal magnification law, i.e. depends on the local stimulus
density only and is independent on position and decouples from the stimulus
density at other positions.Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures. Link to publisher under

Forward analysis of N scattering with an expansion method
The N forward scattering data are analyzed using an expansion method,
where the invariant amplitudes are represented by expansions satisfying the
forward dispersion relations. The experimental errors of the data are taken
into account through the covariance matrix of the coefficients of the
expansions in a careful error analysis. From the results, some coefficients,
, of the subthreshold expansions have been calculated with proper
error bars.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. v2: Added some references. v3: Corrected

Experimental evidence of a fractal dissipative regime in high-T_c superconductors
We report on our experimental evidence of a substantial geometrical
ingredient characterizing the problem of incipient dissipation in high-T_c
superconductors(HTS): high-resolution studies of differential
resistance-current characteristics in absence of magnetic field enabled us to
identify and quantify the fractal dissipative regime inside which the actual
current-carrying medium is an object of fractal geometry. The discovery of a
fractal regime proves the reality and consistency of critical-phenomena
scenario as a model for dissipation in inhomogeneous and disordered HTS, gives
the experimentally-based value of the relevant finite-size scaling exponent and
offers some interesting new guidelines to the problem of pairing mechanisms in
HTS.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, RevTex; Accepted for publication in Physical

Impacts of traditional food consumption advisories: Compliance, changes in diet and loss of confidence in traditional foods

Abstract

Background

Food consumption advisories are often posted when industrial activities are expected to affect the quality and availability of traditional foods used by First Nations. We were recently involved in a project and asked to summarize details regarding the impacts of traditional food consumption advisories with respect to compliance, broader changes in diet and loss of confidence in traditional foods by people.

Methods

Our review was not conducted as a formal systematic comprehensive review; rather, we focused on primary and grey literature presenting academic, health practitioner and First Nations viewpoints on the topic available from literature databases (i.e., PubMed, Web of KnowledgeSM) as well as the internet search engine Google. Some information came from personal communications.

Results

Our overview suggests that when communicated effectively and clearly, and when community members are involved in the process, consumption advisories can result in a decrease in contaminant load in people. On the other hand, consumption advisories can lead to cultural loss and have been linked to a certain amount of social, psychological, nutritional, economic and lifestyle disruption. In some cases, communities have decided to ignore consumption advisories opting to continue with traditional lifestyles believing that the benefits of doing so outweigh the risk of following advisories.

Conclusions

We identified that there are both positive and negative aspects to the issuance of traditional food consumption advisories. A number of variables need to be recognized during the development and implementation of advisories in order to ensure a balance between human health, maintenance of cultures and industrial activity.</p
First Observation of the Doubly Charmed Baryon Xi_cc^+
We observe a signal for the doubly charmed baryon Xi_cc^+ in the charged
decay mode Xi_cc^+ --> Lambda_c^+ K- pi+ in data from SELEX, the charm
hadro-production experiment at Fermilab. We observe an excess of 15.9 events
over an expected background of 6.1 +/- 0.5 events, a statistical significance
of 6.3sigma. The observed mass of this state is (3519 +/- 1) MeV/c^2. The
Gaussian mass width of this state is 3MeV/c^2, consistent with resolution; its
lifetime is less than 33fsec at 90% confidence.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review

First observation of a narrow charm-strange meson DsJ(2632) -> Ds eta and D0 K+
We report the first observation of a charm-strange meson DsJ(2632) at a mass
of 2632.6+/-1.6 MeV/c^2 in data from SELEX, the charm hadro-production
experiment E781 at Fermilab. This state is seen in two decay modes, Ds eta and
D0 K+. In the Ds eta decay mode we observe an excess of 49.3 events with a
significance of 7.2sigma at a mass of 2635.9+/-2.9 MeV/c^2. There is a
corresponding peak of 14 events with a significance of 5.3sigma at 2631.5+/-1.9
MeV/c^2 in the decay mode D0 K+. The decay width of this state is <17 MeV/c^2
at 90% confidence level. The relative branching ratio Gamma(D0K+)/Gamma(Dseta)
is 0.16+/-0.06. The mechanism which keeps this state narrow is unclear. Its
decay pattern is also unusual, being dominated by the Ds eta decay mode.Comment: 5 pages, 3 included eps figures. v2 as accepted for publication by

First Measurement of pi e -> pi e gamma Pion Virtual Compton Scattering
Pion Virtual Compton Scattering (VCS) via the reaction pi e --> pi e gamma
was observed in the Fermilab E781 SELEX experiment. SELEX used a 600 GeV/c pi-
beam incident on target atomic electrons, detecting the incident pi- and the
final state pi-, electron and gamma. Theoretical predictions based on chiral
perturbation theory are incorporated into a Monte Carlo simulation of the
experiment and are compared to the data. The number of reconstructed events (9)
and their distribution with respect to the kinematic variables (for the
kinematic region studied) are in reasonable accord with the predictions. The
corresponding pi- VCS experimental cross section is sigma=38.8+-13 nb, in
agreement with the theoretical expectation sigma=34.7 nb.Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables, 25 references, SELEX home page is
