    Health indicators construction for damage level assessment in bearing diagnostics: A proposal of an energetic approach based on envelope analysis

    Predictive maintenance strategies are established in the industrial context on account of their benefits in terms of costs abatement and machine failures reduction. Among the available techniques, vibration-based condition monitoring (VBCM) has notably been applied in many bearing fault detection problems. The health indicators construction is a central issue for VBCM, since these features provide the necessary information to assess the current machine condition. However, the relation between vibration data and its sources intimately related to bearing damage is not effortlessly definable from a diagnostic perspective. This study discloses a diagnostic investigation performed both on the vibration signal and on the contact pressure signal that is supposed to be one of main forcing terms in the dynamic equilibrium of the damaged bearing. Envelope analysis and spectral kurtosis (SK) are applied to extract and compare diagnostic features from both signals, referring to the Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) case-study. Namely, health indicators are constructed by means of physical considerations based on the effect of faults on the signal power contents. These indicators show to be promising not only for damage detection but, also, for damage severity assessment. Moreover, they provide an invaluable reading key of the link occurring between the contact pressure path and the vibration response

    The Virgo 3 km interferometer for gravitational wave detection

    Virgo, designed, constructed and developed by the French-Italian VIRGO collaboration located in Cascina (Pisa, Italy) and aiming to detect gravitational waves, is a ground-based power recycled Michelson interferometer, with 3 km long suspended Fabry-Perot cavities. The first Virgo scientific data-taking started in mid-May 2007, in coincidence with the corresponding LIGO detectors. The optical scheme of the interferometer and the various optical techniques used in the experiment, such as the laser source, control, alignment, stabilization and detection strategies are outlined. The future upgrades that are planned for Virgo from the optical point of view, especially concerning the evolution of the Virgo laser, are presented. Finally, the next generation of the gravitational wave detector (advanced Virgo) is introduced from the point of view of the laser system

    A study of events containing at least four high transverse momentum jets and a search for double parton scattering (DPS) have been performed using data collected with the UA2 detector at the CERN lbp Collider (x/s= 630 GeV). The results are in good agreement with leading order QCD calculations. A value of at~Ps < 0.82 nb at 95% confidence level (CL) is obtained for the DPS cross section

    The presence of surface membrane IgE (SmIgE)-bearing cells in the peripheral blood (PB) of atopic patients was investigated by the use of isotype-specific rosettes of human red blood cells coupled to immunosorbent-purified rabbit or monoclonal mouse antibodies against human IgE (R or M anti-epsilon-HRBC). After dissociation of cell bound IgE by treatment with acid buffer, 2.1 +/- 0.3% and 1.2 +/- 0.3% circulating non-T, non-phagocytic, cells from atopic patients were still capable of forming rosettes with R or M anti-epsilon-HRBC, respectively. IgE molecules detectable on cells after dissociation of cytophilic IgE were quite resistant, like surface membrane IgM (SmIgM), to treatment with proteolytic enzymes, but they were removed under capping conditions by soluble anti-IgE antisera. All SmIgE-bearing (IgE+) cells also bore DR determinants, but many of them lacked SmIgM. Depletion of IgE+ cells strongly reduced the ability of PB lymphocyte suspensions from atopic patients to produce spontaneously IgE protein in vitro. Likewise, depletion of cells bearing DR determinants (DR+ cells) resulted in a marked decrease of the spontaneous IgE biosynthesis, whereas depletion of SmIgM-bearing (IgM+) cells had no effect. These data suggest that cells mainly implicated in the spontaneous IgE production in vitro seen in atopic patients are DR+ IgE+ IgM- circulating lymphocytes
