“La devoción de la cruz”: entre la crueldad humana y la clemencia divina

    Get PDF

This paper deals with a nonlinear system of partial differential equations modeling the effect of an anti-angiogenic therapy based on an agent that binds specific receptors of the endothelial cells. We study the time-dependent problem as well as the stationary problem associated to it.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovació

Progress on the preparation of nanocrystalline apatites and surface characterization: Overview of fundamental and applied aspects

    Get PDF
Nanocrystalline calcium phosphate apatites constitute the main inorganic part of hard tissues, and a growing focus is devoted to prepare synthetic analogs, so-called “biomimetic”, able to precisely mimic the morphological and physico-chemical features of biological apatite compounds. Both from fundamental and applied viewpoints, an accurate characterization of nanocrystalline apatites, including their peculiar surface features, and a deep knowledge of crystallization aspects are prerequisites to attempt understanding mineralization phenomena in vivo as well as for designing innovative bioactive materials that may then find applications in bone tissue engineering, either as self-supported scaffolds and fillers or in the form of coatings, but also in other domains such as drug delivery or else medical imaging. Also, interfacial phenomena are of prime importance for getting a better insight of biomineralization and for following the behavior of biomaterials in or close to their final conditions of use. In this view, both adsorption and ion exchange represent essential processes involving the surface of apatite nanocrystals, possibly doped with foreign elements or functionalized with organic molecules of interest. In this review paper, we will address these various points in details based on a large literature survey. We will also underline the fundamental physico-chemical and behavioral differences that exist between nanocrystalline apatites (whether of biological origin or their synthetic biomimetic analogs) and stoichiometric hydroxyapatite

An angiogenesis model with nonlinear chemotactic response and flux at the tumor boundary

    Get PDF
In this paper we consider a parabolic problem as well as its stationary counterpart of a model arising in angiogenesis. The problem includes a chemotaxis type term and a nonlinear boundary condition at the tumor boundary. We show that the parabolic problem admits a unique positive global in time solution. Moreover, by bifurcation methods, we show the existence of coexistence states and also we study the local stability of the semi-trivial states.Ministerio de Educación y Cienci

Bedform variability and flow regime in a barrier-inlet system : the mesotidal Piedras mouth (Huelva, SW Spain)

    Get PDF
Bedform fields from the Piedras River mouth (Huelva, SW Spain) have been studied using side-scan sonartechniques, combined with visual scuba-dives, and direct geometric measuring. The dominant flow regime hasbeen determined from the results in these tidal environments, where erosive processes dominate during ebb, transporting sand as a bedload towards the mouth and central sector of the tidal channel. The process is reversedduring tidal floods. During neap tides, larger bedforms maintain their geometry and position, whereas smallripples are re-oriented under different tidal conditions. Sand patches, dunes and ripples are interpreted as sedimentbypassing zones. Large forms indicate high energy flow, which can only migrate when flow velocity reachesthreshold values for the movement, with net sand transport towards open areas. Depositional features indicatelow, moderate, and high-energy conditions. Here, a depositional regime dominated by sediment accommodationis dominant, where sandy sediments are continuously remobilized, transported and re-deposited, even closer to theestuarine mouth. In inner zones finer particles, such as clay and silt, are transported by tides as suspended matterand deposited in protected inner areas. The final results are long narrow tidal flats, which alternate with sandyareas dominated by erosion

An optimal control problem for a Kirchhoff-type equation

    Get PDF
In this paper we study a control problem for a Kirchhoff-type equation. The method to obtain first order necessary optimality conditions is the Dubovitskii-Milyoutin formalism because the classical arguments do not work. We obtain a characterization of the optimal control by a partial differential system which is solved numerically.PROCAD/CASADINHOConselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e TecnológicoMinisterio de Economía y Competitivida

On a parabolic-elliptic chemotactic model with coupled boundary conditions

    Get PDF
This paper deals with a nonlinear system of parabolic-elliptic type with a logistic source term and coupled boundary conditions related to pattern formation. We prove the existence of a unique positive global in time classical solution. We analyze also the stationary problem associated. Moreover it is proved, under the assumption of sufficiently strong logistic dumping, that there is only one nonzero homogeneous equilibrium, and all the solutions to the non-stationary tend to this steady-state for large times.Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnologí

The Contribution of Traditional Meat Goat Farming Systems to Human Wellbeing and Its Importance for the Sustainability of This Livestock Subsector

    Get PDF
Traditional meat goat farming systems are characterized by rearing autochthonous breeds and using natural resources through grazing, often within protected natural areas. In a context of reduction of the number of farms, due to the low income derived from the sale of kids, the role of those systems as suppliers of presently non-remunerated ecosystem services becomes more relevant. The objective of this article is to analyze the current situation of those systems, focusing on their connection with human wellbeing, and to formulate proposals that can contribute to guaranteeing their profitability and continuity. A technical-economic and environmental study of a sample of farms and an analysis of the limiting factors affecting the subsector were carried out. As a result, a set of multifactorial problems was identified, with the lack of acknowledgement and remuneration of some services—mainly environmental and cultural—provided by those systems and the low selling price of kids standing as the main threats. The consideration of meat goat farms as “producers of meat of high functional quality and providers of ecosystem services”, which should be properly quantified and remunerated, would contribute to their preservation and guarantee the provision of benefits associated with the activity

Impacto de la morosidad de la agencia C.C. Real Plaza en la rentabilidad del Banco Scotiabank, periodo 2010-2014, Chiclayo

    Get PDF
