Low-overhead fault-tolerant logic for field-programmable gate arrays
While allowing for the fabrication of increasingly complex and efficient circuitry, transistor shrinkage and count-per-device expansion have major downsides: chiefly increased variation, degradation and fault susceptibility. For this reason, design-time consideration of faults will have to be given to increasing numbers of electronic systems in the future to ensure yields, reliabilities and lifetimes remain acceptably high. Many mathematical operators commonly accelerated in hardware are suited to modification resulting in datapath error detection and correction capabilities with far lower area, performance and/or power consumption overheads than those incurred through the utilisation of more established, general-purpose fault tolerance methods such as modular redundancy. Field-programmable gate arrays are uniquely placed to allow further area savings to be made thanks to their dynamic reconfigurability.
The majority of the technical work presented within this thesis is based upon a benchmark hardware accelerator---a matrix multiplier---that underwent several evolutions in order to detect and correct faults manifesting along its datapath at runtime. In the first instance, fault detectability in excess of 99% was achieved in return for 7.87% additional area and 45.5% extra latency. In the second, the ability to correct errors caused by those faults was added at the cost of 4.20% more area, while 50.7% of this---and 46.2% of the previously incurred latency overhead---was removed through the introduction of partial reconfiguration in the third. The fourth demonstrates further reductions in both area and performance overheads---of 16.7% and 8.27%, respectively---through systematic data width reduction by allowing errors of less than ±0.5% of the maximum output value to propagate.Open Acces

Magnon-Phonon Quantum Correlation Thermometry
A large fraction of quantum science and technology requires low-temperature environments such as those afforded by dilution refrigerators. In these cryogenic environments, accurate thermometry can be difficult to implement, expensive, and often requires calibration to an external reference. Here, we theoretically propose a primary thermometer based on measurement of a hybrid system consisting of phonons coupled via a magnetostrictive interaction to magnons. Thermometry is based on a cross-correlation measurement in which the spectrum of back-action driven motion is used to scale the thermomechanical motion, providing a direct measurement of the phonon temperature independent of experimental parameters. Combined with a simple low-temperature compatible microwave cavity readout, this primary thermometer is expected to become a promising alternative for thermometry below 1 K
High-precision elements of double-lined spectroscopic binaries from combined interferometry and spectroscopy. Application to the beta Cephei star beta Centauri
We present methodology to derive high-precision estimates of the fundamental
parameters of double-lined spectroscopic binaries. We apply the methods to the
case study of the double-lined beta Cephei star beta Centauri. We also present
a detailed analysis of beta Centauri's line-profile variations caused by its
oscillations. We point out that a systematic error in the orbital amplitudes,
and any quantities derived from them, occurs if the radial velocities of
blended component lines are computed without spectral disentangling. This
technique is an essential ingredient in the derivation of the physical
parameters if the goal is to obtain a precision of only a few percent. We have
devised iteration schemes to obtain the orbital elements for systems whose
lines are blended throughout the orbital cycle. We find the following
parameters for beta Cen: and , an age of years. We deduce two oscillation
frequencies for the broad-lined primary of beta Centauri with degrees higher
than 2. We propose that our iteration schemes be used in any future derivations
of the spectroscopic orbital parameters of double-lined binaries with blended
component lines to which disentangling can be successfully applied.Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in A&
Compact, electromagnetic multiple-stream multiple-stream pump for liquid metals - Design concept
Pump provides independent liquid-metal streams at a uniform flow rate. The toroidal magnet structure can accomodate any reasonable number of pump circuits. The power requirement is suited to the output voltage of the basic thermionic diode output
Mid-Infrared Imaging of the Bipolar Planetary Nebula M2-9 from SOFIA
We have imaged the bipolar planetary nebula M2-9 using SOFIA's FORCAST
instrument in six wavelength bands between 6.6 and 37.1 . A bright
central point source, unresolved with SOFIA's 4-to-5 beam,
is seen at each wavelength, and the extended bipolar lobes are clearly seen at
19.7 and beyond. The photometry between 10 and 25 is well fit
by the emission predicted from a stratified disk seen at large inclination, as
has been proposed for this source by Lykou et al and by Smith and Gehrz. The
principal new results in this paper relate to the distribution and properties
of the dust that emits the infrared radiation. In particular, a considerable
fraction of this material is spread uniformly through the lobes, although the
dust density does increase at the sharp outer edge seen in higher resolution
optical images of M2-9. The dust grain population in the lobes shows that small
( 1 ) particles appear to be present in
roughly equal amounts by mass. We suggest that collisional processing within
the bipolar outflow plays an important role in establishing the particle size
distribution.Comment: 40 pages, 9 figures, 2 table
