General Relativistic Simulations of Jet Formation in a Rapidly Rotating Black Hole Magnetosphere
To investigate the formation mechanism of relativistic jets in active
galactic nuclei and micro-quasars, we have developed a new general relativistic
magnetohydrodynamic code in Kerr geometry. Here we report on the first
numerical simulation of jet formation in a rapidly-rotating (a=0.95) Kerr black
hole magnetosphere. We study cases in which the Keplerian accretion disk is
both co-rotating and counter-rotating with respect to the black hole rotation.
In the co-rotating disk case, our results are almost the same as those in
Schwarzschild black hole cases: a gas pressure-driven jet is formed by a shock
in the disk, and a weaker magnetically-driven jet is also generated outside the
gas pressure-driven jet. On the other hand, in the counter-rotating disk case,
a new powerful magnetically-driven jet is formed inside the gas pressure-driven
jet. The newly found magnetically-driven jet in the latter case is accelerated
by a strong magnetic field created by frame dragging in the ergosphere. Through
this process, the magnetic field extracts the energy of the black hole

Numerical evolution of Brill waves
We report a numerical evolution of axisymmetric Brill waves. The numerical
algorithm has new features, including (i) a method for keeping the metric
regular on the axis and (ii) the use of coordinates that bring spatial infinity
to the edge of the computational grid. The dependence of the evolved metric on

The Great Space Weather Event during February 1872 Recorded in East Asia
The study of historical great geomagnetic storms is crucial for assessing the
possible risks to the technological infrastructure of a modern society, caused
by extreme space-weather events. The normal benchmark has been the great
geomagnetic storm of September 1859, the so-called "Carrington Event". However,
there are numerous records of another great geomagnetic storm in February 1872.
This storm, about 12 years after the Carrington Event, resulted in comparable
magnetic disturbances and auroral displays over large areas of the Earth. We
have revisited this great geomagnetic storm in terms of the auroral and sunspot
records in the historical documents from East Asia. In particular, we have
surveyed the auroral records from East Asia and estimated the equatorward
boundary of the auroral oval to be near 24.3 deg invariant latitude (ILAT), on
the basis that the aurora was seen near the zenith at Shanghai (20 deg magnetic
latitude, MLAT). These results confirm that this geomagnetic storm of February
1872 was as extreme as the Carrington Event, at least in terms of the
equatorward motion of the auroral oval. Indeed, our results support the
interpretation of the simultaneous auroral observations made at Bombay (10 deg
MLAT). The East Asian auroral records have indicated extreme brightness,
suggesting unusual precipitation of high-intensity, low-energy electrons during
this geomagnetic storm. We have compared the duration of the East Asian auroral
displays with magnetic observations in Bombay and found that the auroral
displays occurred in the initial phase, main phase, and early recovery phase of

Re-colonizing spaces of memorializing: the case of the Chattri Indian Memorial, UK
This article inspects the ways that spaces of war memorialization are organized and reorganized through official and unofficial meaning-making activities. It aims to contribute to the discussion of the âvalueâ of memorializing by examining a multifaceted space of remembrance and commemoration: the Chattri Indian Memorial built near Brighton, UK. The article brings postcolonial perspectives to explore how memorializing has been organized here, focusing on the activities of once-colonized people and the affective, embodied aspects of organizing practices. Built in 1921 to honour Indian soldiers who fought in WWI, the Chattri evolved from a colonial instrument to symbol and space for ethnic-Indian group activities. The study employed historical, visual and ethnographic methods to study the tangible monument and the changing nature of the memorializing activities carried out around the monument. Memorializing is conceptualized within three inter-related processes: colonizing, de-colonizing and re-colonizing to examine how forms and practices of memorialization constitute a values-laden organizing system
Physical activity, television viewing time and 12 year changes in waist circumference
PURPOSE: Both moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary behavior can be associated with adult adiposity. Much of the relevant evidence is from cross-sectional studies or from prospective studies with relevant exposure measures at a single time point prior to weight gain or incident obesity. This study examined whether changes in MVPA and television (TV) viewing time are associated with subsequent changes in waist circumference, using data from three separate observation points in a large population-based prospective study of Australian adults. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle study collected in 1999-2000 (baseline), 2004-05 (Wave 2), and 2011-12 (Wave 3). The study sample consisted of adults aged 25 to 74 years at baseline who also attended site measurement at three time points (n=3261). Multilevel linear regression analysis examined associations of initial five-year changes in MVPA and TV viewing time (from baseline to Wave 2) with 12-year change in waist circumference (from baseline to Wave 3), adjusting for well-known confounders. RESULTS: As categorical predictors, increases in MVPA significantly attenuated increases in waist circumference (p for trend< 0.001). TV viewing time change was not significantly associated with changes in waist circumference (p for trend =0.06). Combined categories of MVPA and TV viewing time changes were predictive of waist circumference increases; compared to those who increased MVPA and reduced TV viewing time, those who reduced MVPA and increased TV viewing time had a 2cm greater increase in waist circumference (p=0.001). CONCLUSION: Decreasing MVPA emerged as a significant predictor of increases in waist circumference. Increasing TV viewing time was also influential, but its impact was much weaker than MVPA

In addition, persistent proteinuria indicating chronic kidney disease (CKD) is well known as a powerful risk factor for the progression of end-stage renal disease and CVD. On the conundrum of deriving exact solutions from approximate master equations
We derive the exact time-evolution for a general quantum system under the
influence of pure phase-noise and demonstrate that for a Gaussian initial state
of the bath, the exact result can be obtained also within a perturbative
time-local master equation approach already in second order of the system-bath
coupling strength. We reveal that this equivalence holds if the initial state
of the bath can be mapped to a Gaussian phase-space distribution function.
