What type of innovative firms acquire knowledge intensive services and from which suppliers?

    Get PDF
Knowledge intensive services (KIS) and, in particular, R&D services contribute significantly to innovation in firms. The objective of this paper is to find out which characteristics of firms explain the acquisition of R&D services and to analyse whether there are differences depending on the typology of the supplier (universities, technology centres and consulting firms). Three main conclusions emerge from the econometric estimations. Firstly, the results show that size and age matter in the decision to buy R&D services, but these characteristics of firms do not have any particular influence in the decision to choose a specific supplier. Secondly, our results are consistent with the relevance that the literature gives to human capital in absorbing external knowledge. The variables used to control for human skills have a positive effect on the decision to buy R&D services. On the contrary, the estimates of other variables that capture internal knowledge base suggest that there is a substitution process between internal R&D activities and acquiring R&D services. Thirdly, innovation policy has a significant influence on the decision to acquire R&D services.Knowledge intensive services; R&D services; universities; technology centres; consulting firms; innovation policy

Rediscover Rosarito: a public diplomacy initiative for the local community in Rosarito Beach, Baja Mexico

    Get PDF
Rediscover Rosarito is a cross-cultural public affairs graduate class initiative started in February 2008. That year, 28 graduate Communication Management (CM) students from diverse backgrounds and nationalities, taught by Dr. Gregory Payne of the Communication Studies Department, reached out to elected governmental leaders, public officials, citizens and expatriates of Rosarito Beach in Baja Mexico. Together, they launched a public affairs campaign that stressed the importance of grassroots public diplomacy as a major strategy. The goal of the program then and now is to develop and implement an ongoing campaign to help restore the image of this heavily tourism dependent beach community, which had been devastated by a drastic drop in visitor levels as a result of Mexican President Jose Caledron’s ‘war on drugs,’ a violent reaction from the drug cartels against this action, as well as biased media coverage regarding the crisis from sources on both sides of the border, which reflect the all too often proclivity of the media to sensationalize such stores in the effort to secure readershi

Study, design, planning process and manufacturing of a polyvalent bowsprit

    Get PDF
The main objective of this TFG is to make a product for the naval field from the selection of an item available on the market (bowsprit for downwind sails) to make it an improvement or a modification to offer the cheaper product and accessible for all boaters. At present, this element is expensive due to use for a few years ago. According to navigation criteria and types of boats in the market, has opted for the realization of a polyvalent bowsprit because can be installed in most sailboats. It will perform a study market of such booms to acquire information and to see if we can offer this product range to other sizes of sailboats, for smaller boats, in addition to a simple and cheap product to bring production the first units to be manufactured. A prototype will be made in the workshop

Estudio y Estrategias de diseño para amplificadores de doble banda de alto rendimiento. Estructuras con líneas CRLH y ECRLH.

In this paper two methods to design dual band and high efficiency power amplifiers using Composite Right/Left Hand (CRLH) and Extended Composite Right/Left Hand (ECRLH) transmission lines are described. The CRLH and ECRLH transmission lines, design procedure and design equations are presented. As example of application the design of an CE class amplifier appears. The non-linear phase response of a CRLH and ECRLH transmission line has been utilized to design arbitrary dual-band amplifiers. The simulations results are presented at the end of the paper, demonstrating the validity of the use of this type of lines in the design of amplifiers

This is the author¿s version of a work that was accepted for publication in International Journal of Engine Research. Changes resulting from the publishing process, such as peer review, editing, corrections, structural formatting, and other quality control mechanisms may not be reflected in this document. Changes may have been made to this work since it was submitted for publication. A definitive version was subsequently published as https://doi.org/10.1177/1468087420909735[EN] A test bench has been designed to assess condensation formation produced on the interior of a low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation cooler working with hot stream of humid air representing an engine warm-up stage, when its coolant starts from very cold conditions. An experimental campaign has been conducted with three different exhaust gas recir- culation mass flow rates, four exhaust gas recirculation inlet temperatures and three different coolant initial tempera- tures, covering common conditions found in the low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation system of internal combustion engines under cold starts. The transient experimental results are analyzed and compared with a simple psychrometric condensation model, obtaining a good correlation and reproducing the trends of the condensation, even though an over- prediction of the condensates of around 20%¿40% exists due to the strong hypotheses assumed. The warm-up tests are most sensitive to the initial coolant temperature. For example, an engine starting at ¿10 °C ambient temperature could require 10 min to stop producing water in the low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation cooler, with an accumulated quan- tity during the warm-up of about 100 mL of condensates. The author(s) disclosed receipt of the following financial support for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article: Francisco Moya is partially supported through a FPI-GVA-ACIF-2019 grant of the Government of Generalitat Valenciana and the European Social Fund.Galindo, J.; Navarro, R.; Tarí, D.; Moya-Torres, F. Noise control by sonic crystal barriers made of recycled materials

A systematic study of noise barriers based on sonic crystals made of cylinders that use recycled materials like absorbing component is here reported. The barriers consist of only three rows of perforated metal shells filled with rubber crumb. Measurements of reflectance and transmittance by these barriers are reported. Their attenuation properties result from a combination of sound absorption by the rubber crumb and reflection by the periodic distribution of scatterers. It is concluded that porous cylinders can be used as building blocks whose physical parameters can be optimized in order to design efficient barriers adapted to different noisy environments

Peer Reviewe
