The lecture deals with broad topics. First, it addresses some questions related to the current state of the EU integration regarding institutions and common policies. Second, it discusses the continued importance, the main results and hindering factors related to the Lisbon Programme, with a special emphasis on the educational system in Europe and Hungary. Third, the lecture deals with some possibilities in changing the EU’s rather limited external relation models to more flexible instruments

O objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar a estratégia da Embrapa para construir sua Infraestrutura de Dados Espaciais de forma a contribuir com o debate sobre a organização, preservação e integração de dados geoespaciais heterogêneos de acordo com as diretrizes federais estabelecidas pela INDE. Para esse fim, apresentaremos as etapas do processo interno realizado na Embrapa para elaboração o plano de adesão à INDE, o qual contou com a formação de um grupo de trabalho e, em seguida, descreveremos a estratégia elaborada

‘The longest suicide vote in history’: the Labour Party leadership election of 2015

The Labour leadership contest of 2015 resulted in the election of the veteran Left-wing backbencher, Jeremy Corbyn, who clearly defeated the early favourite, Andy Burnham. Yet Corbyn enjoyed very little support among Labour MPs, and his victory plunged the PLP into turmoil, particularly as he was widely viewed as incapable of leading the Party to victory in the 2020 general election. Given that, much of the established academic literature on Party leadership contests emphasises the ability to foster unity, and thereby render a party electable, as two of the key criteria for electing a new leader, coupled with overall competence, important questions are raised about how and why the Labour Party chose someone to lead them who clearly does not meet these criteria. We will argue that whilst these are the natural priorities of MPs when electing a new leader, in Corbyn’s case, much of the extra-parliamentary Labour Party was more concerned about ideological conviction and purity of principles, regardless of how far these diverged from public opinion. This was especially true of those who signed-up to the Labour Party following the 2015 general election defeat. Indeed, many of these only did so after Corbyn had become a candidate. This clearly suggests a serious tension between maximising intra-party democracy and ensuring the electability of the parliamentary party itself

On the impact of covariance functions in multi-objective Bayesian optimization for engineering design

The final version is available from the publisher via the DOI in this recordMulti-objective Bayesian optimization (BO) is a highly useful class of methods that can effectively solve computationally expensive engineering design optimization problems with multiple objectives. However, the impact of covariance function, which is an important part of multi-objective BO, is rarely studied in the context of engineering optimization. We aim to shed light on this issue by performing numerical experiments on engineering design optimization problems, primarily low-fidelity problems so that we are able to statistically evaluate the performance of BO methods with various covariance functions. In this paper, we performed the study using a set of subsonic airfoil optimization cases as benchmark problems. Expected hypervolume improvement was used as the acquisition function to enrich the experimental design. Results show that the choice of the covariance function give a notable impact on the performance of multi-objective BO. In this regard, Kriging models with Matern-3/2 is the most robust method in terms of the diversity and convergence to the Pareto front that can handle problems with various complexities.Natural Environment Research Council (NERC
