Multi-Scale Turbulence Injector: a new tool to generate intense homogeneous and isotropic turbulence for premixed combustion
Nearly homogeneous and isotropic, highly turbulent flow, generated by an
original multi-scale injector is experimentally studied. This multi-scale
injector is made of three perforated plates shifted in space such that the
diameter of their holes and their blockage ratio increase with the downstream
distance. The Multi-Scale Turbulence Injector (hereafter, MuSTI) is compared
with a Mono-Scale Turbulence Injector (MoSTI), the latter being constituted by
only the last plate of MuSTI. This comparison is done for both cold and
reactive flows. For the cold flow, it is shown that, in comparison with the
classical mono-scale injector, for the MuSTI injector: (i) the turbulent
kinetic energy is roughly twice larger, and the kinetic energy supply is
distributed over the whole range of scales. This is emphasized by second and
third order structure functions. (ii) the transverse fluxes of momentum and
energy are enhanced, (iii) the homogeneity and isotropy are reached earlier
(%), (iv) the jet merging distance is the relevant scaling
length-scale of the turbulent flow, (v) high turbulence intensity (%) is achieved in the homogeneous and isotropic region, although the
Reynolds number based on the Taylor microscale remains moderate (). In a second part, the interaction between the multi-scale
generated turbulence and the premixed flame front is investigated by laser
tomography. A lean V-shaped methane/air flame is stabilised on a heated rod in
the homogeneous and isotropic region of the turbulent flow. The main
observation is that the flame wrinkling is hugely amplified with the
multi-scale generated injector, as testified by the increase of the flame brush
thickness.Comment: 29 pages, 21 figures, submitted to Journal of Turbulenc
On the self-similarity of line segments in decaying homogeneous isotropic turbulence
The self-similarity of a passive scalar in homogeneous isotropic decaying
turbulence is investigated by the method of line segments (M. Gauding et al.,
Physics of Fluids 27.9 (2015): 095102). The analysis is based on a highly
resolved direct numerical simulation of decaying turbulence. The method of line
segments is used to perform a decomposition of the scalar field into smaller
sub-units based on the extremal points of the scalar along a straight line.
These sub-units (the so-called line segments) are parameterized by their length
and the difference of the scalar field between the ending
points. Line segments can be understood as thin local convective-diffusive
structures in which diffusive processes are enhanced by compressive strain.
From DNS, it is shown that the marginal distribution function of the
length~ assumes complete self-similarity when re-scaled by the mean
length . The joint statistics of and , from which
the local gradient can be defined, play an important role
in understanding the turbulence mixing and flow structure. Large values of
occur at a small but finite length scale. Statistics of are characterized
by rare but strong deviations that exceed the standard deviation by more than
one order of magnitude. It is shown that these events break complete
self-similarity of line segments, which confirms the standard paradigm of
turbulence that intense events (which are known as internal intermittency) are
not self-similar
Quantum turbulence simulations using the Gross-Pitaevskii equation: high-performance computing and new numerical benchmarks
This paper is concerned with the numerical investigation of Quantum
Turbulence (QT) described by the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation. Numerical
simulations are performed using a parallel (MPI-OpenMP) code based on a
pseudo-spectral spatial discretization and second order splitting for the time
integration. We start by revisiting (in the framework of
high-performance/high-accuracy computations) well-known GP-QT settings, based
on the analogy with classical vortical flows: Taylor-Green (TG) vortices and
Arnold-Beltrami-Childress (ABC) flow. Two new settings are suggested to build
the initial condition for the QT simulation. They are based on the direct
manipulation of the wave function by generating a smoothed random phase (SRP)
field, or seeding random vortex rings (RVR) pairs. The new initial conditions
have the advantage to be simpler to implement than the TG and ABC approaches,
while generating statistically equivalent QT fields. Each of these four GP-QT
settings is described in detail by defining corresponding benchmarks that could
be used to validate/calibrate new GP codes. We offer a comprehensive
description of the numerical and physical parameters of each benchmark. We
analyze the results in detail and present values, spectra and structure
functions of main quantities of interest (energy, helicity, etc.) that are
useful to describe the turbulent flow. Some general features of QT are
identified, despite the variety of initial states.Comment: 61 pages, 21 figure
Self-preservation in annular jet with large diameter ratio
