A Coupled Oscillator Model for the Origin of Bimodality and Multimodality

Perhaps because of the elegance of the central limit theorem, it is often assumed that distributions in nature will approach singly-peaked, unimodal shapes reminiscent of the Gaussian normal distribution. However, many systems behave differently, with variables following apparently bimodal or multimodal distributions. Here we argue that multimodality may emerge naturally as a result of repulsive or inhibitory coupling dynamics, and we show rigorously how it emerges for a broad class of coupling functions in variants of the paradigmatic Kuramoto model.Comment: 11 pages, 12 figure

The poet, playwright, novelist, memoirist and translator, Agustí Bartra (Barcelona, 1908-Terrassa, 1982) can be considered the first and foremost link between Catalan literature and English and American High Modernity. The High Modernity of T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, William Carlos Williams, Wallace Stevens or Marianne Moore can be seen in three distinct ways in Bartra's vast literary output: as a direct influence on his original work in verse and prose; in paratextual devices and deeply significant intertextual links; and in his numerous translations. His pioneering work, «Una antologia de la lírica nord-americana» (1951), a survey of American poetry from Walt Whitman to Peter Vierick, can be considered the Catalan gateway to modern American poetry, High Modernity included

Joan Sales's novel Incerta glòria [Uncertain Glory] is an acknowledged masterpiece of XXth century literature. In 1991 it was translated into English by David Rosenthal, a well-known translator of Catalan fiction. This paper delves into the reasons why the Rosenthal translation never found its way into the hands of a major publisher

A quantum algorithm providing exponential speed increase for finding eigenvalues and eigenvectors

We describe a new polynomial time quantum algorithm that uses the quantum fast fourier transform to find eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a Hamiltonian operator, and that can be applied in cases (commonly found in ab initio physics and chemistry problems) for which all known classical algorithms require exponential time. Applications of the algorithm to specific problems are considered, and we find that classically intractable and interesting problems from atomic physics may be solved with between 50 and 100 quantum bits.Comment: 10 page

Equality, diversity and prejudice in Britain: results from the 2005 National Survey

Britain is an increasingly diverse and multifaceted society. Consequently, manifestations of inequality, prejudice and discrimination are potentially becoming more varied and complex. The meaning of equality itself is a matter of considerable debate. Perceptions, attitudes, stereotypes and emotions permeate social relationships between groups, whether conflictual or harmonious. How are different groups perceived? How do images of different groups map onto prejudice? To what extent do people experience prejudice directed against themselves? There is increasing interest in whether Britain is becoming a more or less tolerant, accepting or indeed coherent society. This report describes the findings of a survey which employed social psychological methods and measures to assess a range of different aspects of prejudice towards six significant groups in British society – defined by gender, age, ethnicity, sexuality, disability and religion. The report examines the values people espouse, their experiences, and their expressions of prejudice, the extent that ‘political correctness’ may affect expressions of prejudice, the social stereotypes underpinning prejudice, whether prejudice is expressed differently towards different types of group, and the extent to which British society is perceived as a cohesive whole or as being formed of distinct and separate groups. It also explores whether prejudice is predominantly an issue of personal attitudes or whether it is rooted more in the relationships between particular social groups

Higher Order Methods for Simulations on Quantum Computers

To efficiently implement many-qubit gates for use in quantum simulations on quantum computers we develop and present methods reexpressing exp[-i (H_1 + H_2 + ...) \Delta t] as a product of factors exp[-i H_1 \Delta t], exp[-i H_2 \Delta t], ... which is accurate to 3rd or 4th order in \Delta t. The methods we derive are an extended form of symplectic method and can also be used for the integration of classical Hamiltonians on classical computers. We derive both integral and irrational methods, and find the most efficient methods in both cases.Comment: 21 pages, Latex, one figur

TM digital image products for applications

    Get PDF
The image characteristics of digital data generated by LANDSAT 4 thematic mapper (TM) are discussed. Digital data from the TM resides in tape files at various stages of image processing. Within each image data file, the image lines are blocked by a factor of either 5 for a computer compatible tape CCT-BT, or 4 for a CCT-AT and CCT-PT; in each format, the image file has a different format. Nominal geometric corrections which provide proper geodetic relationships between different parts of the image are available only for the CCT-PT. It is concluded that detector 3 of band 5 on the TM does not respond; this channel of data needs replacement. The empty bin phenomenon in CCT-AT images results from integer truncations of mixed-mode arithmetric operations

TM digital image products for applications

Computer compatible tapes (CCTs) of LANDSAT 4 thematic mapper (TM) digital image products are compared and reviewed. The following tape formats are discussed: (1) raw band-sequential data (CCT-BT); (2) calibrated data (CCT-AT); and (3) geometrically resampled data (CCT-PT). Each format represents different steps in the process of producing fully corrected TM data. The CCT-BT images are uncorrected radiometrically or geometrically, CCT-AT data are radiometrically calibrated, and CCT-PT images are both radiometrically and geometrically corrected

Singlet states and the estimation of eigenstates and eigenvalues of an unknown Controlled-U gate

    Get PDF
We consider several problems that involve finding the eigenvalues and generating the eigenstates of unknown unitary gates. We first examine Controlled-U gates that act on qubits, and assume that we know the eigenvalues. It is then shown how to use singlet states to produce qubits in the eigenstates of the gate. We then remove the assumption that we know the eigenvalues and show how to both find the eigenvalues and produce qubits in the eigenstates. Finally, we look at the case where the unitary operator acts on qutrits and has eigenvalues of 1 and -1, where the eigenvalue 1 is doubly degenerate. The eigenstates are unknown. We are able to use a singlet state to produce a qutrit in the eigenstate corresponding to the -1 eigenvalue.Comment: Latex, 10 pages, no figure
