Staying Competitive in the High-tech Global Economy: Another Look at the H-1B Visa

    Get PDF
This paper addresses a specific suggestion for immigration reform—that we must seek skilled immigrants—by examining support for a move to unlimited H-1B visa issuance. Great care is taken to include up to date media coverage as immigration policy is greatly affected by public opinion. This paper outlines the historical precedent for looser restrictions on immigration and then reviews the current landscape of U.S. immigration and the H-1B visa market, showing the strong moral and economic support for a move to unlimited H-1B visa issuance.H-1B, visa, immigration, labor

Active Immunotherapy and Adoptive Cell Transfer as an Effective Cancer Treatment

    Get PDF
There are many ways to fight cancer using the body’s own immune system. Some methods include the administration of vaccines while others involve stimulatory factors injected near tumors. One promising method is enlisting the help of T cells. To fight cancer effectively, T cells must be able to recognize cancerous antigens and the environment in which these T cells reside must be conducive to their function, survival, and proliferation. This paper discusses a method of providing such an environment called adoptive cell transfer, as well as the elements that effect this protocol and the ways in which the environment can be manipulated to increase the effectiveness of adoptive cell transfer. Many factors contribute to the observation that the effectiveness of adoptive cell transfer increases as immunodepletion increases, namely, the depletion of regulatory T cells. Additionally, the existence of natural killer cells during adoptive cell transfer has been shown to decrease its effectiveness. Also, increased levels of cytokines IL-7 and IL-15 enhance the function, survival and proliferation of transferred T cells which would increase their effectiveness. Moreover, the results of adoptive cell transfer are more positive when patients’ own T cells are used. These findings show that T cells can be used through adoptive cell transfer as an effective treatment for metastatic melanoma patients, and that there is potential for adoptive cell transfer to be adopted as a widespread effective treatment for cancer

Redefining the Monetary Agggregates: A Clean Sweep

    Get PDF
This paper focuses on the role of sweep programs in properly measuring money. We propose new monetary aggregates that adjust the conventional measures to account for the medium of exchange capability of funds in sweep programs. Using data on swept funds in retail and commercial demand deposit (DD) sweep programs, we provide time series of monthly data on the sweep-adjusted money measures. By the twenty-first century, DD sweeps have led to distortion in reported MZM of approximately 3 percent, 5 percent for M2, and 6 percent for M2M. Underreporting of M1 due to retail and DD sweep programs is almost 70 percent.

Rising inequality is holding back the U.S. economy

Why has the U.S. economy been so sluggish to return to growth in the aftermath of the Great Recession of the late 2000s? In new research, Barry Z. Cynamon and Steven M. Fazzari find that the current level of household demand is more than 17 percent lower than its pre-recession trend, preventing a stronger recovery. They argue that in the lead up to the Great Recession, households compensated for rising inequality and stagnant wages by borrowing more, something that became unsustainable when the financial crisis hit. For the U.S. to achieve robust growth rates once again, the gap in demand that opened with the collapse of household spending in the Great Recession will have to be closed, preferably through wage growth across the board

The aim was to evaluate the participation of the private initiative in the sanitation sector in municipalities with less than 50 thousand inhabitants and the importance of the model of action of the Special Public Health Service - SESP and of the sanitation actions developed by the sanitary engineer Szachna Eliasz Cynamon in these localities. This is a documentary research with content analysis, exploratory analysis of secondary data and the Mann-Whitney test was used to verify if there are significant differences in the participation of the private sector in larger municipalities. Two videos available to the public of the seminar on the environment and health were examined, as well as indicators of water supply and sanitary sewage on open consultation sites, the sanitarist collection, books and articles on the subject and normative acts. According to the test (p-value<0.05), private companies predominantly operate in larger cities in Brazil, thus, according to the content analysis, the SESP performance model and the practices advocated by Cynamon would currently encourage, sanitation solutions that could lead to environments favorable to health and the desired universalization.

Brazilian legal frameworks have addressed social participation as a structural axis. However, there is a need to examine the extent to which such policies incorporate social participation through mobilization and if they effectively enhance social control. This is the purpose of this article. It presents an overview of social participation in major public policies in health, sanitation and education, from the Federal Constitution of 1988 until the present day. The methodology is a study guided by the qualitative method of bibliographical-documentary research, conducted through the content analysis of legal frameworks in which social participation appears. From this study, it was observed that the Brazilian public policies advanced concerning the discourse on social control in public policies, but we still have a long way to go in terms of effective mobilization for social control. The National Environmental Education and Social Mobilization for Sanitation Program can be the starting point for this process of realization of social participation
