The Common Water Snake, Nerodia sipedon sipedon, is one of six subspecies, and the only species of Nerodia to inhabit West Virginia. Because it is abundant and information on the species is lacking within the state, it was used as my study organism. The effectiveness of manual palpation, the most commonly used method in snake diet related studies, was tested against museum dissection by comparing presence and absence of gut contents. Nineteen individuals of 76 manually palpated collected snakes were compared to 6 individuals of 37 dissected snakes using a Pearson chi-square analysis. Results suggested manual palpation is an effective method to obtain diet data, X2 (1, N=135) = 0.7296, p= 0.05. In addition, morphological data were collected from field specimens and used to determine the best predictor of sex, as well as to obtain information on average snout-vent length, total length, and mass of N. s. sipedon in West Virginia. Field notes of cover object use, behavior, and other herpetofauna from the field site were also reported. Data collected from this study will provide information on the effectiveness of manual palpation and information on the natural history of N. s. sipedon in West Virginia

A BI-LEVEL SCHEME FOR ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF AIR TRANSPORTATION ON LOCAL DEVELOPMENT

An approach to assess the impact of the creation or expansion of an air transport infrastructure over regional development is proposed in this paper. Effective long term planning of this costly investment requires performing an overall analysis of socio-economic consequences through long term forecasting, scenario generation and risk analysis. One of main aspects of this task is related with the estimation of future demand over the modified transportation network which attends the considered region. The proposed approach makes use of two complementary models: One model is devoted to demand forecasting taking into account the modified accessibility of the multimodal transportation network, the other one defines the global transport supply according to a profit maximization behavior for the involved transport system. The demand forecasting process is based on an entropy maximization approach with flexible origin-destination levels to determine the intensity and the distribution of new origin-destination vectors. A two level solution technique considering vehicle flows at the first level and the payload/passengers flows at the second level is introduced. The proposed solution scheme is composed of an iterative process between the current solution for demand forecasting and the supply optimization problem: the entropy maximizing distribution problem provides the origin-destination matrix given a cost/capacity structure, while the supply optimization problem provides this cost/capacity structure resulting from the accessibility level, given the updated origin-destination vectors. The proposed approach is illustrated in the case of a fast developing rural agro-industrial area in central Brazil, where the consequences of the installation of a medium size airport are assessed.

This essay starts from the following question: “To what extent did the experiences of a black woman - Matilde Ribeiro - in a management position at SEPPIR / PR distinguish public action in response to the black agenda, with regard to public policies for education from 2003 to 2008, until the present day (2020)?” Therefore, we sought to understand, in an intersectional approach of race and gender in management spaces, the role of this woman in the problematic organ and period. It was also questioned how her experiences and trajectory as a black woman, academic and activist were mobilized to compose educational policies for the black population. To reach the information, public domain files such as the Lattes Curriculum, Decrees, Ordinances, Laws and publications linked to the Minister's action were used. Based on the analysis of these documents, an in-depth semi-structured interview was conducted with former Minister Matilde Ribeiro. Thus, based on the principle of Intersectionality, the research shows its links with the demands of the Black Women Movement in its practice as a manager. For the theoretical foundation, priority was given to the writing of different authors, most of whom were explicitly committed to the promotion of race and gender equity, in addition to being imbued from the perspective of Public Policies, Public Action and Management : Lélia Gonzalez (1982), Joselina Silva (2014), Renísia C. Garcia Filice (2008; 2011; 2017, 2019), Rayssa Araújo Carnaúba (2019) Carla Akotirene (2018), Kimberlé Crenshaw (2002; 2004), Patrícia Hill Collins (2018), Angela Davis (2016), Achille Mbembe (2017), Joaze Bernadino-Costa, Nelson Maldonato-Torres and Ramón Grosfoguel (2018), Walter Mignolo and María Lugones (2014), among others. The results demonstrate that the ex-Minister, together with her team and the community that accompanies her, promoted great public actions among Programs, Forums and Meetings, enabling the creation of public policy instruments such as: laws, rules, resolutions and publications relevant to the guidelines for the implementation of public policies and actions of an affirmative and anti-racist nature. Matilde Ribeiro, led to prioritize the demands, among them "quilombolas" and education, which, for the black population are inseparable, acted with prominence and proximity with the elaboration and execution of several government programs, among them the Government Program - Brazil without Racism (2003), the Affirmative Actions Program (2003) and the "Brasil Quilombola" Program (PBQ) (2007). It is concluded that the presence of this black woman as an antiracist and anti-sexist manager impressed the vision of historical reparation that the black population claims. SEPPIR / PR proved to be a space of conflict, but also of dialogue for receiving the demands of social movements and acting in the intersectionality and transversality of the racial agenda, amongst other institutions

Defensorias Públicas: caminhos e lacunas no acesso à justiça

    Get PDF

PA54101 PA54102 PA54103 UIDB/04077/2020Stemphylium vesicarium (Wallr.) E. G. Simmons is the pathogen responsible of brown spot disease in pear and has become one of the main concerns for European pear producers. In Portugal, S. vesicarium is responsible for significant yield reduction and economic losses in "Rocha" pear (Pyrus communis L. cv Rocha) production. Considering the antimicrobial potential of propolis, the high incidence of brown spot in pears and the emergence of fungicides resistance in S. vesicarium, this study aimed to evaluate the potential of Portuguese propolis as an alternative strategy to control brown spot disease in "Rocha" pear. In vitro assays showed that propolis extracts were able to inhibit up to 90% the S. vesicarium mycelial growth. In vivo assays in artificially wounded and inoculated "Rocha" pears showed that, compared to the control, the disease incidence decreased up to 25% and the lesions diameter up to 57%, in fruits treated with propolis. Moreover, propolis seems to be more efficient in reducing the disease incidence when applied after pathogen inoculation (curative assay) than when applied before pathogen inoculation (prophylactic assay). Thus, the results suggest that propolis extracts have potential to be applied as part of an integrated approach for the control of brown spot of pear.publishersversionpublishe
