A multilingual high-level language computer architecture
Vita. The objective of this dissertation is to describe the design considerations for a computer architecture capable of directly executing multiple high order languages (HOL) thereby eleiminating the need to translate source input into a lower level form acceptable to conventional von Neumann computers for execution. This is an extension beyond high order language machines that directly execute a single high order language, and consequently are concerned with conventional language translation when other high order languages are to be executed on the single high order language machine. The advantages of completely eliminating any type of translation are numerous and strongly support the former approach to language execution. Among these advantages are: (1) programmer productivity is enhanced; (2) there is no dispersion of semantics between a different external and internal language representation; (3) the overhead time associated with the compilation and assembly of programs is eliminated; (4) there is a reduction on the amount of conventional software; and, (5) systems programs are more descriptive
