    Seeing is recalling : disentangling observation and imagination inflation effects on self-performance false memories

    A memória humana é susceptível a distorções ou memórias falsas. Neste trabalho procurámos compreender especificamente as memórias falsas de autodesempenho. As memórias falsas de auto-desempenho ocorrem quando alguém acredita ter executado acções (e.g., “abrir o cadeado”) que não executou. Tanto imaginar que se executa acções (efeito de inflação da imaginação) como ver alguém a executar acções (efeito de inflação da observação) podem gerar esta distorção mnésica. Estudos anteriores encontraram estes efeitos separadamente e identificaram características (e.g., repetição das acções) que contribuem para os mesmos. No entanto, os mecanismos que explicam este fenómeno ainda não são claros, assim como se os mesmos processos integram as memórias falsas de auto-desempenho geradas por observação e por imaginação. Neste trabalho explorámos as semelhanças e diferenças da imaginação e da observação de acções, testámos o seu efeito combinado e dois mecanismos que podem estar subjacentes aos efeitos de inflação. Dada a escassez de materiais disponíveis para realizar os nossos estudos experimentais, i.e., estímulos de acções validados que possam ser usados em tarefas de imaginação e de observação, realizámos, em primeiro lugar, um estudo de validação. Este estudo assegurou que os materiais usados nas nossas experiências cumpriam critérios importantes, como a imaginabilidade, familiaridade, prototipicidade, assim como que os vídeos representam formas convencionais de executar estas acções. De seguida, conduzimos quatro experiências nas quais testámos os efeitos isolados e combinados da imaginação e da observação. O papel do agente da imaginação (próprio vs. outro) foi manipulado, e uma tarefa adicional de julgamentos de fonte incluída. Foram testados dois mecanismos que podem estar subjacentes aos efeitos de inflação: numa das experiências, as exigências de monitorização da fonte foram manipuladas e, noutra, foi criada interferência com a simulação motora. Estes estudos mostraram que a imaginação e a observação em combinação podem gerar um efeito de inflação maior que estas fontes isoladamente sob condições específicas (com variações entre experiências); imaginar o próprio ou outro a executar as acções leva a padrões de resultados distintos; há diferenças qualitativas entre acções imaginadas e observadas; interferência com simulação motora pode impactar o efeito de inflação da observação; e a observação sobrepôs-se sistematicamente à imaginação nos julgamentos de fonte. Em conjunto estes resultados sugerem que a imaginação e a observação contribuem de forma diferente para as memórias falsas de autodesempenho, e não devem ser consideradas apenas fontes diferentes do mesmo fenómeno.Human memory is prone to distortions or false memories. In this work, we sought to understand specifically self-performance false memories. Self-performance false memories occur when someone believes to have performed an action (e.g., ‘to open the locker’) that they did not perform. Both imagining performing actions (imagination inflation effect) and watching someone executing actions (observation inflation effect) can lead to this memory distortion. Prior studies have found these effects separately and identified characteristics (e.g., action repetition) that contribute to them. Yet, the mechanisms that explain this phenomenon remain to be clarified, as well as if the same processes accommodate self-performance false memories from observation and imagination. In this work, we explored the commonalities and differences of action imagination and observation, tested their combined effect, and two possible mechanisms subserving inflation effects. Due to the lack of materials available to conduct our experimental studies, i.e., validated action stimuli that can be used in both imagination and observation tasks, we first conducted a stimulus validation study. This study ensured that the materials used in our experiments met important criteria, such as imaginability, familiarity, prototypicality, and that the action videos depict conventional ways of performing those actions. We then conducted four experiments testing the isolated and combined effects of imagination and observation. The imagination agent (self- vs. other-imagination) was manipulated, and additional source judgments were included. Two possible mechanisms subserving inflation effects were tested: in one experiment, source-monitoring demands were manipulated; in another experiment, motor simulation was hampered. These studies showed that, combined, imagination and observation can produce a stronger inflation effect than these sources in isolation under specific conditions (with variations across experiments); self- and other-imagination lead to different patterns of results; there are qualitative differences between imagined and observed actions; interference with motor simulation seems to impact observation inflation; and observation overshadowed imagination systematically on source judgments. Together, these findings suggest that imagination and observation contribute differently to selfperformance false memories, and should not be considered merely different sources of the same phenomenon

    Does functional soil microbial diversity contribute to explain within-site plant beta-diversity in an alpine grassland and a <i>dehesa</i> meadow in Spain?

    Questions: Once that the effects of hydrological and chemical soil properties have been accounted for, does soil microbial diversity contribute to explain change in plant community structure (i.e. within-site beta-diversity)? If so, at which spatial scale does microbial diversity operate? Location: La Mina in Moscosa Farm, Salamanca, western Spain (dehesa community) and Laguna Larga in the Urbión Peaks, Soria, central-northern Spain (alpine grassland). Methods: The abundance of vascular plant species, soil gram-negative microbial functional types and soil chemical properties (pH, available phosphorus, and extractable cations) were sampled at both sites, for which hydrological models were available. Redundancy analysis (RDA) was used to partition variation in plant community structure into hydrological, chemical and microbial components. Spatial filters, arranged in scalograms, were used to test for the spatial scales at which plant community structure change. Results: In the case of the dehesa the diversity of soil gram-negative microbes, weakly driven by soil pH, contributed to a small extent (adj-R2 = 2%) and at a relative medium spatial scale to explain change in plant community structure. The abundance of a few dehesa species, both annual (Trifolium dubium, Vulpia bromoides) and perennial (Poa bulbosa, Festuca ampla), was associated with either increasing or decreasing soil microbial diversity. In the alpine meadow the contribution was negligible. Conclusions: Microbial diversity can drive community structure, though in the hierarchy of environmental factors structuring communities it appears to rank lower than other soil factors. Still, microbial diversity appears to promote or restrain individual plant species. This paper aims to encourage future studies to use more comprehensive and insightful techniques to assess microbial diversity and to combine this with statistical approaches such as the one used here

    Carbon and oxygen in HII regions of the Magellanic Clouds: abundance discrepancy and chemical evolution

    We present C and O abundances in the Magellanic Clouds derived from deep spectra of HII regions. The data have been taken with the Ultraviolet-Visual Echelle Spectrograph at the 8.2-m VLT. The sample comprises 5 HII regions in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and 4 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We measure pure recombination lines (RLs) of CII and OII in all the objects, permitting to derive the abundance discrepancy factors (ADFs) for O^2+, as well as their O/H, C/H and C/O ratios. We compare the ADFs with those of other HII regions in different galaxies. The results suggest a possible metallicity dependence of the ADF for the low-metallicity objects, but more uncertain for high-metallicity objects. We compare nebular and B-type stellar abundances and we find that the stellar abundances agree better with the nebular ones derived from collisionally excited lines (CELs). Comparing these results with other galaxies we observe that stellar abundances seem to agree better with the nebular ones derived from CELs in low-metallicity environments and from RLs in high-metallicity environments. The C/H, O/H and C/O ratios show almost flat radial gradients, in contrast with the spiral galaxies where such gradients are negative. We explore the chemical evolution analysing C/O vs. O/H and comparing with the results of HII regions in other galaxies. The LMC seems to show a similar chemical evolution to the external zones of small spiral galaxies and the SMC behaves as a typical star-forming dwarf galaxy.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 17 pages, 11 figures, 8 table

Finite volume 3D numerical computations have been carried out in order to study the thermal characteristics of different rectangular cross section aluminium pipes and to test the performance of the PVT collector with several laminar flow rates. Experiments with the same laminar flows show the same behavior than in the numerical results

    GRAPE: GRaphical Abstracted Protein Explorer

    The region surrounding a protein, known as the surface of interaction or molecular surface, can provide valuable insight into its function. Unfortunately, due to the complexity of both their geometry and their surface fields, study of these surfaces can be slow and difficult and important features may be hard to identify. Here, we describe our GRaphical Abstracted Protein Explorer, or GRAPE, a web server that allows users to explore abstracted representations of proteins. These abstracted surfaces effectively reduce the level of detail of the surface of a macromolecule, using a specialized algorithm that removes small bumps and pockets, while preserving large-scale structural features. Scalar fields, such as electrostatic potential and hydropathy, are smoothed to further reduce visual complexity. This entirely new way of looking at proteins complements more traditional views of the molecular surface. GRAPE includes a thin 3D viewer that allows users to quickly flip back and forth between both views. Abstracted views provide a fast way to assess both a molecule's shape and its different surface field distributions. GRAPE is freely available at http://grape.uwbacter.org

    Predicting Joint Replacement Waiting Times

    Currently, the median waiting time for total hip and knee replacement in Ontario is greater than 6 months. Waiting longer than 6 months is not recommended and may result in lower post-operative benefits. We developed a simulation model to estimate the proportion of patients who would receive surgery within the recommended waiting time for surgery over a 10-year period considering a wide range of demand projections and varying the number of available surgeries. Using an estimate that demand will grow by approximately 8.7% each year for 10 years, we determined that increasing available supply by 10% each year was unable to maintain the status quo for 10 years. Reducing waiting times within 10 years required that the annual supply of surgeries increased by 12% or greater. Allocating surgeries across regions in proportion to each region’s waiting time resulted in a more efficient distribution of surgeries and a greater reduction in waiting times in the long-term compared to allocation strategies based only on the region’s population size

    Ophthalmological emergencies and the SARSCoV-2 outbreak

    Since the end of 2019, an outbreak of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), originating in the Chinese city of Wuhan has spread rapidly worldwide causing thousands of deaths. Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is supported by SARS-CoV-2 and represents the causative agent of a potentially fatal disease that is of great global public health concern. Italy has been the first European country recording an elevated number of infected forcing the Italian Government to call for total lockdown. The lockdown had the aim to limit the spread of infection through social distancing. The purpose of this study is to analyze how the pandemic has affected the patient’s accesses to the Ophthalmological Emergency Department of a tertiary referral center in central-northern Italy, during the lockdown period. The charts of all patients that came to the Emergency Department during the lockdown period (March 10 –May 4, 2020) have been retrospectively collected and compared with those in the same period of 2019 and the period from 15 January– 9 March 2020. A significant reduction of visits during the lockdown has been observed, compared with those of pre-lockdown period (reduction of 65.4%) and with those of the same period of 2019 (reduction of 74.3%). Particularly, during the lockdown, minor and not urgency visits decreased whereas the undeferrable urgency ones increased. These pieces of evidence could be explained by the fear of patients to be infected; but also revealed patients misuse of emergency services

Robinson, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Session Description The purpose of this interdisciplinary breakout session is to present several different approaches to the perception, creation, and implementation of community engaged research partnerships, and the range of funding sources that support them. Panelists will present brief descriptions of their projects and funding, followed by the UMass Dartmouth Research Development Manager’s insights and suggestions concerning the funding of successful matches of academic researchers and community research partners. Stover, PhD, RN, PHCNS-BC, CNE, College of Nursing, Department of Community Nursing Community Based Participatory Research with Community Health Workers of the Southcoast Region My community partner and I had several ideas and projects that we wanted to work on together. To help organize our thoughts and deliverables, we applied for a spot in the first cohort of the Community Based Participatory Research Academy, a grant funded week-long course presented by the University Of Michigan School Of Public Health and the Detroit Urban Research Center. Spending a week with community engaged researchers and community leaders focused the academic-community partnership of UMass Dartmouth College of Nursing Assistant Professor Caitlin Stover and Community Leader Kathleen Murphy to promote the health of Southcoast region by mobilizing and building the capacity of Community Health Workers in the region. Monthly guided video conferences/workshops/virtual communications conducted by our assigned mentors (one community based mentor and one academic mentor) and the core of community engaged researchers assisted us in receiving a non-competitive Community Partnership Building Grant, creating and accomplishing short and long term goals, all while providing expert mentorship in applying the CBPR tenets to our work. Andrea Klimt, PhD, College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Sociology & Anthropology Pride of Place: The Potential of Collaborative Photography The Fall River Portraits project brought together university sociology and anthropology students, local high school students, and senior citizens to photographically document the complex social realities of a small economically-struggling Massachusetts city. Project photographers documented the impact of decades of economic decline on the social fabric and built environment of this urban space as well as evidence of cultural vibrancy and resilience in the city’s various neighborhoods. The resulting visual narratives fostered a pride of place and hopeful sense of self-recognition amongst local residents and encouraged the thoughtful engagement with local realities of participating college students. This project was funded by the UMass President\u27s Office, Creative Economy Award. Christina Cipriano, PhD, College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Psychology Class Interrupted: Improving Under-studied Classroom Environments Funded by the William T. Grant Foundation and recently, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, the RELATE Project has been conducting systematic investigations of self-contained classrooms over the past four years across the Northeast. Towards the end of improving outcomes for students and educators in self-contained special education classrooms, we are advancing the science of classroom observation and improving the quality of educational experiences, one classroom at a time. To date, our work has resulted in a new psychometrically validated tool for evaluating effective interactions in these classrooms and an ecologically valid team-based professional development approach for teacher-paraeducator teams. Robinson, PhD, PsyD, College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Sociology & Anthropology Psychological Foundations of Power and Relational Abuse Amongst Rural and Small-Town Teens Initially funded by a pilot grant from the UMass Medical School CTSA-CER Pilot Program, and in community partnership with the Cape Cod Justice for Youth Collaborative and other member agencies of the Barnstable County Council for Children, Youth, and Families, this multi-stage project addressed the question: What are the conscious and unconscious psychological processes and power dynamics that explain behaviors associated with “teen dating violence”? The strong collaborative, and integrated, relationship that already existed between the PI and community partners contributed to the success of this pilot study, and facilitated new alliances amongst ancillary agencies. Collaborations has included regional organization of focus groups across Barnstable County (Cape Cod) to produce a data pool of first-person perspectives of teen relationships and violence in contexts of community challenges and supports. The work has considered diverse social and economic contexts as variable forces that affect psychological processes, to explore the psychology of teen relational abuse.     An Evaluation of Strategies to Reduce Waiting Times for Total Joint Replacement in Ontario

    Background: In 2005, the median waiting time for total hip and knee joint replacements in Ontario was greater than 6 months, which is considered longer than clinically appropriate. Demand is expected to increase and exacerbate already long waiting times. Solutions are needed to reduce waiting times and improve waiting list management. Methods: We developed a discrete event simulation model of the Ontario total joint replacement system to evaluate the effects of 4 management strategies on waiting times: (1) reductions in surgical demand; (2) formal clinical prioritization; (3) waiting time guarantees; and (4) common waiting list management. Results: If the number of surgeries performed increases by less than 10% each year, then demand must be reduced by at least 15% to ensure that, within 10 years, 90% of patients receive surgery within their maximum recommended waiting time. Clinically prioritizing patients reduced waiting times for high-priority patients and increased the number of patients at all priority levels who received surgery each year within recommended maximum waiting times by 9.3%. A waiting time guarantee for all patients provided fewer surgeries within recommended waiting times. Common waiting list management improved efficiency and increased equity in waiting across regions. Discussion: Dramatically increasing the supply of joint replacement surgeries or diverting demand for surgeries to other jurisdictions will reduce waiting times for total joint replacement surgery. Introducing a strictly adhered to patient prioritization scheme will ensure that more patients receive surgery within severity-specific waiting time targets. Implementing a waiting time guarantee for all patients will not reduce waiting times—it will only shuffle waiting times from some patients to others. To reduce waiting times to clinically acceptable levels within 10 years, increases in the number of surgeries provided greater than those observed historically or reductions in demand are needed
