    Homeless in the world : war, narrative, and historical consciousness in Eileen Chang, György Lukåcs, and Lev Tolstoy

    This paper explores how Lev Tolstoy’s work was discussed by both Marxist philosopher György LukĂĄcs and Chinese writer Eileen Chang during the global crisis of the 1930s and the Second World War. According to LukĂĄcs, Tolstoy’s fiction embodied the quintessence of realist narrative’s ability to capture the mass experience of history. For Chang, defending herself against charges of being a trivial and uncommitted pulp writer, Tolstoy’s work exemplified the value of a narrative process marked by the very serendipity and contingency mirrored in reality. All three writers struggled with a conception of a unified world both as a utopian ideal, and as a violent historic actuality produced by capital’s global and imperial logic. I explore the common resonances of war, narrative, and history that run through LukĂĄcs’ and Chang’s appropriations of Tolstoy, as well as examine the ways in which all three writers grappled with world-historical consciousness through literary form. Finally, noting LukĂĄcs’ and Chang’s common citation of Tolstoy as a monument to their own writing, I also articulate how all these writers engaged in a special kind of “world literature” indelibly marked by modern warfare and mass-produced suffering

    Generally, common law jurisdictions do not allow for the garnishing of monies in a joint account to satisfy a judgment debt. In Timing Ltd v Tay Toh Hin and another [2020] SGHC 169; and Timing Ltd v Tay Toh Hin and another [2021] SGHC 5, the Singapore High Court carved out a limited exception to the rule, allowing a provisional garnishee order to be granted over a joint account where there is at least strong prima facie evidence that all monies in that account belongs to the judgment debtor. The authors believe that the exception is a step in the right direction: it disincentivises judgment debtors from using joint accounts to keep assets out of their creditors’ reach. At the same time, the requirement of strong prima facie evidence is a high threshold which ensures that garnishee banks and joint account holders will not be subject to frivolous proceedings. However, there remain a number of substantive and procedural issues, such as the legal effect of a garnishee order on the ownership rights of the joint account holders, and the appropriate costs orders in such proceedings, which will need to be dealt with in future cases

    Student Engagement and Satisfaction with Online Learning: Comparative Eastern and Western Perspectives

    This study investigated the antecedents of student engagement in online learning and the consequent impact on higher education students’ satisfaction with online learning. More specifically, a structural model was proposed to examine students’ perceptions of adaptability, interactivity, computer/ Internet self-efficacy and psychological safety as key factors impacting their engagement with online learning tools and satisfaction with the online learning experience. A self-administered online survey was conducted with 539 undergraduate students in China, Australia, and South Korea. Structural equation modelling and multigroup analysis were used to test the study’s hypotheses. The findings indicated that the proposed four antecedents significantly impacted their engagement with online learning tools, influencing their overall satisfaction with the online learning experience. In addition, this study found significant differences between the relationships of the four antecedents of engagement with online learning tools among students in China, Australia, and South Korea, influencing their satisfaction with the online learning experience. The study concludes with theoretical and practical implications informing future institutional practices

    Modeling And Experimental Study On A Direct Expansion Based Enhanced Dehumidification Air Conditioning System

    Direct expansion (DX) air conditioning (A/C) systems are widely used for controlling indoor air temperature and humidity in various buildings in hot and humid climates since they are simpler and more energy efficient, and generally cost less to own and maintain. However, it is often problematic for a DX A/C system to provide desired humidity control due to the current system design trends, variable weather conditions and the commonly used control strategies for DX A/C systems. Therefore, a standalone DX based enhanced dehumidification air conditioning (EDAC) system is proposed to provide suitable indoor humidity control at different seasons. There are two evaporators in the EDAC system, thus it could act as a dehumidifier (ADO mode) on the days when less or no additional cooling is required by employing one evaporator as a reheating coil, or act as an enhanced dehumidification A/C system (EDAC mode) by functioning two evaporators to separately deal with sensible and latent cooling. A prototype experimental EDAC system was established in a laboratory. The operational characteristics of the EDAC system at ADO mode in terms of the moisture removal capacity (MRC), the specific moisture extraction rate (SMER) and the resulted supply air temperature were investigated and reported in this paper. Firstly, the experimental results on operational characteristics are reported. Secondly, the development of a steady-state mathematical model for the ADO mode of the EDAC system is presented. The developed model was thereafter used to study the influence of different sizes of the evaporator and the reheating coil on the operational characteristic of the EDAC system at ADO mode. The study results could lead to a better understanding of the operational characteristics of the EDAC system, facilitating its design, operation and control

    MicroRNAs in systemic rheumatic diseases

    MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are endogenous, non-coding, single-stranded RNAs about 21 nucleotides in length. miRNAs have been shown to regulate gene expression and thus influence a wide range of physiological and pathological processes. Moreover, they are detected in a variety of sources, including tissues, serum, and other body fluids, such as saliva. The role of miRNAs is evident in various malignant and nonmalignant diseases, and there is accumulating evidence also for an important role of miRNAs in systemic rheumatic diseases. Abnormal expression of miRNAs has been reported in autoimmune diseases, mainly in systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. miRNAs can be aberrantly expressed even in the different stages of disease progression, allowing miRNAs to be important biomarkers, to help understand the pathogenesis of the disease, and to monitor disease activity and effects of treatment. Different groups have demonstrated a link between miRNA expression and disease activity, as in the case of renal flares in lupus patients. Moreover, miRNAs are emerging as potential targets for new therapeutic strategies of autoimmune disorders. Taken together, recent data demonstrate that miRNAs can influence mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis, relapse, and specific organ involvement of autoimmune diseases. The ultimate goal is the identification of a miRNA target or targets that could be manipulated through specific therapies, aiming at activation or inhibition of specific miRNAs responsible for the development of disease
